From Berlin to Göttingen
Moving to Göttingen: half-timbering, university and the Leine valley
Guide
Göttingen is a university city in southern Lower Saxony: around a quarter of its residents are students, mostly at the Georg-August-Universität, the oldest and largest university in Lower Saxony. The Leine flows through the city from south to north, and the city centre, with its half-timbered houses and narrow lanes, lies inside the old ramparts. For moving day this means planning the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) and parking permit early, so that long carrying distances and waiting times are avoided. Our home move service is aimed at students, families and commuters.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 335 km via the A2, A39 and A7 to Göttingen; with the statutory break that takes about four and a half hours. We handle dismantling and assembly, packing and, if you wish, storage – for example when moving into a student flatshare in the Weststadt or into a house in Geismar. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Göttingen; we quote the fixed price after the survey, enquiries on 01625978461.

Request a fixed price for your move to Göttingen
Fixed price after a survey, dates around the semester
Whether it is a student move at the start of semester or a family move to Weende – we plan your date to suit the Göttingen housing situation. As many tenancies end at the end of the month, the last days of each month are in particularly high demand. Secure your preferred date early; we quote the fixed price after the survey.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of when you move to Göttingen
Planned from Berlin, arriving in the Leine valley
We have no branch in southern Lower Saxony; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – from narrow half-timbered entrances in the city centre to halls of residence near the North Campus. We apply for the parking restriction according to the city's requirements and put the fixed price in writing. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available for valuables. Places with their own pages can be found on our locations page.

Save with a part load
For smaller moves or single items to Göttingen, a part load (Beiladung) can be cheaper: your belongings travel together with other consignments towards southern Lower Saxony. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy for students with little furniture.

From
planning to the Neues Rathaus
A move to Göttingen comes with a few points typical of the city: scarce parking in the city centre, lots of cycle and pedestrian traffic around the university and peaks in demand at the start of semester in October and April. You apply for the parking restriction zone at the road traffic department, and re-registration takes place within two weeks at the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall). Interim storage is also often an issue, for example when the new flat is not yet available. Just get in touch.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Göttingen
Göttingen districts at a glance
The city centre inside the old ramparts offers half-timbered houses, short distances to the university and student life – but little room for the removal van. Many students and young families live in the Weststadt. To the north lies the university's science-focused North Campus, near which many students and researchers live.
The districts of Geismar, Grone, Nikolausberg and Weende, incorporated in 1964, have quieter residential areas with detached houses and housing estates. To the east the city borders the Göttingen Forest. On the southern edge of the city the Kiessee lake invites you to relax. Altogether the city is divided into 18 urban districts and districts – we do not quote specific rents, as they depend heavily on location and condition.
Employers, university & quality of life in Göttingen
Göttingen is shaped by the Georg-August-Universität, opened in 1734, and two further universities, as well as several Max Planck Institutes, for example for Multidisciplinary Sciences, Dynamics and Self-Organisation, or Solar System Research. Then there is the DLR (German Aerospace Center) and the Universitätsmedizin Göttingen (University Medical Center) with around 1,700 beds. An important industrial employer is Sartorius AG; many measurement technology companies have joined forces in the Measurement Valley association.
Quality of life is high: short distances, lots of cycling, greenery along the ramparts, at the Kiessee and in the Göttingen Forest, plus theatres, cinemas and student pubs. The A7 runs through the western part of the city, and since 1991 Göttingen has been an ICE stop on the Hanover–Würzburg line. Anyone who wants to combine science, tradition and student life will find a well-balanced home here.

Applying for a parking restriction zone for your move in Göttingen
In Göttingen you apply for the parking restriction zone for your move at the road traffic department (Fachdienst Straßenverkehr), parking permits team, in the Neues Rathaus (Hiroshimaplatz 1-4). The application is informal and can be made in writing or in person (tel. 0551/400-613210, email [email protected]). You need to state your name, address and telephone number, the street and house number, the moving day and the type of vehicle, for example a car with trailer, a Sprinter or a 7.5 t lorry.
- Deadline: according to the city, the application must arrive at least two weeks before the planned moving date.
- Fee: the city states €35.00, both if you put up the signs yourself and if the moving company does so. In managed parking zones, special-use fees per parking space are added.
- Signs: sign 283 with an additional plate must be put up. Only official traffic signs are permitted, which can be hired for a fee.
- Sundays and public holidays: according to the city, moves on these days cannot be approved, so switch to a working day or Saturday.
If you put up the signs yourself, you are usually responsible for transport, setting up, taking down and returning them, as well as documenting the existing situation. You do not have to do this alone: we handle the application and signage as part of our parking restriction zone service. The step-by-step instructions are in the guide Applying for a parking restriction zone.
Göttingen: re-registration, resident parking permit and pavement parking
After the move, the rule in Göttingen is: "Re-registration must take place within two weeks of moving into the flat." It takes place in the Neues Rathaus (ground floor, room 026); according to the city, in-person visits are only possible with an appointment via termin.goettingen.de. The landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) must be presented on paper – a tenancy agreement is not enough. You also need your identity card or passport. Alternatively, the city offers electronic residence registration.
If you have a car with a resident parking permit, you should report the move there too. According to the city, for a move within the same resident parking area the address is only updated at the next renewal. If you move to a different area, you must re-register within two weeks, otherwise your current permit becomes invalid. From 1 January 2026 the change costs €14.00. On its "Umzug" (moving) page, Göttingen also lists the identity card and vehicle re-registration, so you can plan all your official errands in advance.
Do not park the removal van on the pavement: according to the city, new rules on pavement parking have applied in the Untere Südstadt since 1 September 2025, and fines have been issued since 1 October 2025. Information about your location can be found under Moving company Göttingen, with more tips in the article Living in Göttingen.
