Celle Guide
Arriving in Celle, the Southern Gateway to the Lüneburg Heath
The first few weeks
Celle lies in the glacial valley of the Aller, around 40 km north-east of Hanover, and is considered the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath. The old town has more than 400 half-timbered houses, plus the castle in Renaissance and Baroque style and the French Garden. With around 67,000 inhabitants, Celle is a district town and a large independent town; you can get most places by bike or bus. Our services for moving day can be found under home removal.
We are not a Celle company; we come from Berlin-Moabit and handle packing, transport and furniture assembly right up to your new door. We give you the fixed price after a survey, and your belongings are covered under the HGB. The route and journey time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Celle; you will find further destinations under long-distance moves.

Frequently Asked Questions from New Residents in Celle
17 Districts – Where Newcomers Live in Celle
The town of Celle lists 17 districts, including Blumlage/Altstadt, Neuenhäusen, Hehlentor, Klein Hehlen, Neustadt/Heese, Westercelle, Altencelle, Garßen, Groß Hehlen, Vorwerk and Wietzenbruch. The old town with over 400 half-timbered houses offers short distances but narrow lanes; in Neuenhäusen, around Hugenottenstraße and Bahnhofstraße, stand Baroque buildings of the former western suburb.
The outer districts such as Altencelle, Garßen or Groß Hehlen are more rural. Which district suits you depends on your commute, school and budget; the city's rent index helps you put the price into context. Before committing, also look at the staircase and the parking situation – especially in the old town, this decides carrying routes and the parking restriction on moving day. For each district, the city gives the area and population on its website.
Work, Education and Leisure in Celle
We deliberately do not quote specific rents here; the qualified Celle rent index 2024 shows the local comparative rent. Celle has mechanical engineering, electronics, food production and, above all, deep drilling and oil/gas technology – with companies such as Baker Hughes, Halliburton and ITAG. Then there are the Higher Regional Court and the Regional Social Court of Lower Saxony-Bremen. Since 2015, TU Clausthal has run a drilling technology research centre in Celle; many people commute to Hanover to study.
For leisure, there are the castle, the French Garden, the old town with the Old Town Hall in Weser Renaissance style, and the Aller. Hanover is around 40 km away, Brunswick 55 km. The B 3 federal road connects Celle to Soltau and Hamburg in the north and to Hanover in the south. Newcomers get to know the town most easily on a walk through the old town and the French Garden.
How Much Does a Move to Celle Cost?
Whether a small 1-room flat or a large family home – our prices are fairly calculated. Prices start from €369 for 1 room, from €594 for 2 rooms, from €899 for 3 rooms and from €1,309 for 4 rooms. For houses and villas, we draw up a suitable individual quote. If you are moving further away, a long-distance move costs from €4.15 per kilometre. The easiest way to clarify all the details is a free survey.
What the price depends on
First of all, volume counts – the more household goods, the greater the effort. Distance is charged from €4.15/km. The floor and lift also play a role, as does a possible parking restriction zone. We are happy to add furniture assembly or a shared load.

Registration in Celle: Deadline, Citizens' Office and Online Residence Registration
If you move to Celle, under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. On the town of Celle's portal, the citizens' office is listed for this (phone 05141 123300). According to the town, registration is free of charge.
The town lists these documents:
- landlord certificate (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung) – legally it is the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, which must contain the landlord's name and address, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register
- proof of identity, usually the identity card
- civil status certificates
Since 5 May 2025, sole and main residences in Celle can be registered online via "electronic residence registration". According to the town, you need an identity card or eID card with the online ID function activated, a BundID account and the ID app. For a secondary residence or a switch between main and secondary residence, book an appointment at the citizens' office via termin.celle.de. For a move within Germany, there is no need to deregister at your old place of residence. When registering in person, the appointment usually coincides with updating your ID. According to the town, the New Town Hall (Am Französischen Garten 1, 29221 Celle) is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 am to 4 pm, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 am to 1 pm and Thursdays from 8 am to 5 pm; opening hours of individual departments may differ. We explain further steps after moving in in our article on re-registration deadlines. Information checked as of: October 2026.
Living in Celle: Districts, Rent Index, Resident Parking and Bulky Waste
On its website, the town of Celle lists 17 districts, including Blumlage/Altstadt, Neuenhäusen, Hehlentor, Klein Hehlen, Neustadt/Heese, Westercelle, Altencelle, Garßen, Groß Hehlen, Vorwerk and Wietzenbruch. If you are looking for a flat, the qualified rent index is a good guide: the town provides the "Mietspiegel Stadt Celle 2024" as a PDF and as an online calculator for the local comparative rent.
If you live in a designated resident parking area, you can apply for a resident parking permit. According to the town, the requirement is a registered main or secondary residence in the area, and there must be no car parking space or garage available. The fee is 30 euros. Required documents include the application, a copy of your identity card or a registration certificate, and a copy of the vehicle registration certificate; the responsible office is the town of Celle, road traffic department, phone 05141 123245.
For bulky waste, the district of Celle rather than the town is responsible. Booking runs via an online service on the district's portal; according to the portal, collection takes place on fixed dates or on request. The portal does not state deadlines or fees and refers to the Celle waste management association (AWC). General tips can be found in our article on disposing of bulky waste properly. What a move to the town means in organisational terms is explained in the moving guide for Celle.
