Braunschweig Guide

Arriving in Braunschweig, the City on the Oker

The first few weeks

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 231 km via the A2 and A39 to Braunschweig – the guide helps you settle in.

Braunschweig has around 253,000 inhabitants and is divided into twelve districts with 74 statistical sub-districts. The Oker flows around the city centre with its cathedral, Burgplatz, palace and state theatre; around it lie the ring districts with many period buildings. The Technical University was founded in 1745 as the Collegium Carolinum and is regarded as Germany's oldest university of technology and natural sciences. Then there are research institutes and federal authorities such as the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (national metrology institute) and the Federal Aviation Office. The city is well connected via the A2, A39 and A36.

Economically, the city is shaped by Volkswagen with its Braunschweig plant and Volkswagen Financial Services, the Braunschweigische Landessparkasse, the Öffentliche Versicherung insurer and the Siemens rail automation plant. Alongside the TU there is the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK). We are not a Braunschweig company but come from Berlin; the route and journey time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Braunschweig.

FROM BERLIN

What We Take On – and What Is Up to You in Braunschweig

Transport from Berlin, paperwork on your side

We have no branch in Lower Saxony; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. We ask about the floor, lift and access in advance – from a period building in the Magniviertel to a high-rise in the Weststadt – and we plan the parking restriction in good time according to the city's deadlines. For your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB, § 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available. You handle registration, the resident parking permit and the bulky waste appointment yourself; we set the delivery day so that it all fits. Further destinations can be found under Locations.

Packing Service

We pack in Berlin and label every box by destination room, so that everything in Braunschweig is to hand on the first evening – with our packing service.

Kitchen Assembly

We dismantle the kitchen and wardrobes in Berlin and reassemble them in Braunschweig, so that you can cook again quickly – with furniture assembly.

Student moves

For a room at the start of term at the TU or HBK in Braunschweig, a shared load is often enough instead of a lorry of your own – with our student move.

Furniture Transport

A wardrobe or piano travels padded and secured, even into a period building in the Östliches Ringgebiet in Braunschweig – with our furniture transport.

What needs doing after moving into Braunschweig, in a sensible order – from the appointment at the registration authority to bulky waste. Please check fees and deadlines in advance on braunschweig.de.

01

Book an Appointment, Register

Within two weeks of moving in, with an appointment via braunschweig.de/termin – with ID and landlord confirmation (§ 17 and § 19 BMG).
02

Re-register your car

Enter the new address with the vehicle registration authority without delay (§ 15 FZV); your existing number plate can stay.
03

Use the rent index

The city's qualified rent index 2025 (Mietspiegel) is free of charge and helps you assess a rent on offer – before you sign.
04

Residents' parking permit

05

Bulky Waste with ALBA

ALBA Braunschweig GmbH collects old furniture and boxes on request; according to the city this costs €20 per 5 m³, to be put out by 6 am.

Just One Room to Braunschweig? Shared Load

Shared trip via the A2

DAILY LIFE IN BRAUNSCHWEIG

What
Newcomers to Braunschweig Should Know

Authorities, routes, housing

After moving into Braunschweig, the first two weeks count: book an appointment at the registration authority – according to the city it is not possible without one – then vehicle registration, nursery or school and, if needed, the resident parking permit. You may keep your existing number plate, but the address must be changed. For moving day, we offer our home removal with packing, transport and assembly. If you are coming from another city, you will find further routes under long-distance moves.

Choosing a borough

The city centre with the Magniviertel, the Östliches Ringgebiet with period buildings, the Weststadt or Braunschweig-Süd: the district determines access and loading route for a home removal, senior move or student move in Braunschweig.

Planning moving day

Packing service, padded furniture transport and, for single items, a small transport: we clarify parking restriction and carrying distances in advance, so that the lorry in Braunschweig stands close to the door.

Businesses and special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public authority move, shared load or furniture taxi to Braunschweig, we agree fixed time windows so that business can quickly carry on.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers to Braunschweig

Registration, districts, rent index, parking and moving to Braunschweig – answered briefly.
Families often look on the outskirts, for example in Stöckheim, Melverode or Rüningen in the south, where there are more detached houses and gardens. Riddagshausen in the east lies next to the nature reserve. What matters is the school route, place of work and connection to the tram or bus; it is best to enquire about nursery places before the move.

Twelve Districts – Where Newcomers Live in Braunschweig

Braunschweig is divided into twelve districts and 74 statistical sub-districts. The city centre inside the Oker ring offers short distances to work and culture, and the Magniviertel around St Magnus' Church is one of the “traditional islands” with historic buildings. Around the city centre lie the ring districts, such as the Östliches Ringgebiet – a district in its own right with many period buildings from the late 19th century and the pre-war era.

Riddagshausen in the east is shaped by its monastery and the nature reserve of the same name with its ponds, while the Weststadt is characterised by larger housing estates. Stöckheim and Melverode belong to the Braunschweig-Süd district, and Volkmarode still has its old village centre. Which district suits you depends on your commute, school and connection to the tram or bus; before you commit, also take a look at the surroundings.

Work, Study and Leisure in Braunschweig

We deliberately do not quote specific rents here; the city's qualified rent index 2025 and its list of housing cooperatives help you assess them. As a business location, Braunschweig benefits from Volkswagen with its plant and Financial Services, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the Federal Aviation Office, Siemens, the Öffentliche Versicherung and the Landessparkasse. TU Braunschweig is Germany's oldest university of technology and natural sciences, and the HBK was founded in 1963.

In your free time, the Oker, the Bürgerpark, Riddagshausen and the Nußberg hill in Prinz-Albrecht-Park beckon, along with the cathedral, Burgplatz, the state theatre and the colourful Happy Rizzi House. The city is compact, and trams and buses connect the districts. Hanover, Wolfsburg and the Harz mountains are quickly reached via the A2, A39 and A36. For newcomers, the easiest way to get to know the city is on foot around the Oker ring – with markets, churches and museums in the city centre.

How Much Does a Move to Braunschweig Cost?

Registering in Braunschweig: Deadline, Appointment and Documents

Under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz), there is a deadline of two weeks after moving in. The City of Braunschweig gives the same deadline for registering a main residence. Registration must be done in person or by an authorised representative, and an appointment is required; it can be booked via braunschweig.de/termin. The responsible department is General Citizens' Affairs (telephone 0531 4701); for queries the city also gives the citizens' hotline 115. For moves within Braunschweig, the city lists its own service “Re-register main residence”, and there is also a separate entry for second homes. Registration is free of charge, but late registration can be punished with a fine.

According to the city, you should bring:

  • identity card and/or passport
  • the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
  • if moving from abroad, your last address in Germany
  • if represented, a written power of attorney together with the ID documents of the person being registered

When moving from abroad, all family members must be present, and representation is not possible in that case. Young people aged 16 and over can register without their parents' consent; children under 16 are registered by the people whose home they are moving into. For separated parents, the city requires the other parent's declaration of consent. In addition, the city links to an online service “Register main residence”. We explain how deadlines and consequences work in detail under Forgot to re-register: fine.

Living and Daily Life in Braunschweig: Rent Index, Cooperatives, Parking, Bulky Waste

For flat hunting, the City of Braunschweig publishes a qualified rent index for 2025. It came into force on publication in the official gazette on 8 April 2025 and is free of charge; the building department is responsible. On its page about housing companies, the city lists, among others, the Baugenossenschaft “Wiederaufbau” eG, the Baugenossenschaft am Werder eG, the Braunschweiger Baugenossenschaft eG, the Vereinigte Wohnungsgenossenschaft eG and Nibelungen-Wohnbau-GmbH.

You can get a resident parking permit if you are registered with a main residence in the parking zone; if you have a vehicle of your own, it must be registered in Braunschweig. According to the city, it costs 15.35 euros for six months, 30.70 euros for one year or 61.40 euros for two years. Only one permit is issued per resident. You can apply online or by appointment, and since 1 August 2026 the permit has been issued digitally. If you move to another parking zone, the city changes the permit free of charge.

Bulky waste is only collected on request from ALBA Braunschweig GmbH, online or by phone. According to the city, collection costs 20 euros per 5 m³, and the items must be at the kerbside by 6 am on collection day. Further orientation is provided by our moving guide for Braunschweig and the Braunschweig location page.
