Braunschweig guide
Moving to Braunschweig: city of the lion, TU and the banks of the Oker
at a glance
With around 253,000 residents, Braunschweig is the second-largest city in Lower Saxony after Hanover. Henry the Lion made it a trading metropolis in the Middle Ages; the Burgplatz, the cathedral and the Lion Monument still recall this today. The Oker flows around the city centre, and the Technical University of Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and numerous research institutions shape the city. If you are planning a move to Braunschweig, you should above all know the lead time for the parking restriction: the city requires the application at least three weeks in advance, and you must put up the signs at least four days before the move. From Berlin-Moabit it is around 231 km by lorry via the A2.
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 231 km by lorry via the A2 and A39 to Braunschweig; that is about 3 hours including a break. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Braunschweig or from Braunschweig back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route is described in detail on the page Moving Berlin – Braunschweig. If you are only taking a few pieces of furniture, a shared load is often cheaper.

How your move to Braunschweig works with us
Planned from Berlin, arriving on the Oker
We do not have a branch in Braunschweig; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we check access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a late-19th-century building in the Östliches Ringgebiet, a flat in the Weststadt or a house in Riddagshausen. We apply for the parking restriction outside your new address in good time according to the city's requirements. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

From
planning to assembly
A move to Braunschweig raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get into the late-19th-century streets around the old town, why does the parking restriction have to be applied for three weeks in advance and how does registration work? This guide introduces districts from the Östliches Ringgebiet via the Weststadt to Riddagshausen, explains parking restrictions, bulky waste and residents' parking, and describes the journey of around 231 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Braunschweig
Districts of Braunschweig at a glance
Braunschweig has the right district for every lifestyle. The Östliches Ringgebiet with its late-19th-century buildings is popular with students and young families, while the Weststadt is a large residential area with its own infrastructure. If you are looking for urban life near the Burgplatz and the cathedral, the city centre offers historic charm with short distances to shops and cafés.
Life is quieter in Riddagshausen by the nature reserve with its monastery ponds, or in Melverode and Stöckheim in the south. Many students live around the TU and in Gliesmarode. For the move, the specific address matters more than the district: a late-19th-century building without a lift needs different planning from a house on the edge of the city.
Employers, research and quality of life in Braunschweig
We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition; compared with Hanover or Berlin, Braunschweig is considered fairly affordable. Major employers include Volkswagen with its Braunschweig plant, Volkswagen Financial Services AG and the commercial vehicle holding company, the Siemens rail automation plant and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The Technical University of Braunschweig and other research institutions and federal agencies attract skilled workers.
The A2, A39 and A36 motorways lead to Braunschweig, and light rail and buses connect the districts. The Oker flows around the city centre, and the Staatstheater and the old town around the Burgplatz offer culture. With Riddagshausen and the parks along the Oker there is plenty of greenery in the city; the Harz mountains are within reach to the south.

Cost factors in the move
The most important criteria for calculating the price are the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged at €3.90/km. The floor and lift also play a part, as does a possible parking restriction zone. Furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked as options.

Parking restriction for your move in Braunschweig: three weeks' lead time and €25 per day
In Braunschweig you apply for the parking restriction zone for a move to the Civil Engineering and Transport department, Road Traffic division (legal basis according to the city: § 46 (1) StVO). Private individuals need a service account for this. A zone can only be applied for if there is actually a parking option at the location. The application must be submitted at least 3 weeks before the move, because site visits may be necessary.
In the application you state your contact details, the date and period of the move, the location of the moving address and the length of the area to be closed off in metres. The city charges a daily fee of €25.00; the fee notice is part of the permit, and the amount must be transferred within 4 weeks.
You must put up the signs yourself at least 4 days before the moving date; the city does not do this and has no signs. There is a record form for documenting that the parking restriction signs have been put up. According to the city, referring to the Federal Administrative Court, where signs are put up at short notice, vehicles may only be towed after "three full calendar days".
For the pedestrian zone the city sets fixed times: between 11.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. a special permit is required, between 6.00 p.m. and 11.00 a.m. it is not. If you wish, we take care of the application and signs, see Parking restriction zone; further information about the city is on the Braunschweig location page.
Braunschweig: registration, bulky waste collection and residents' parking permit
According to the City of Braunschweig, registration must take place within 2 weeks of moving into the flat. It is done in person or by an authorised representative, with an appointment via braunschweig.de/termin. There are no fees, but late registration can result in a fine. The landlord's confirmation is required under § 19 BMG, so ask your landlord for it early. You can reach the general citizens' services on 0531 4701.
Bulky waste from private households is collected by ALBA Braunschweig GmbH, but only on request. You can book via the online bulky waste order form or by phone on 0531 88620. Put the bulky items out at the roadside by 6.00 a.m. on collection day. According to the city, €20.00 is charged per 5 m³.
If you have a car, apply for a residents' parking permit, online or in person with an appointment. The requirement is that you are registered with your main residence in the parking area at the time of the application; so register first. You need the vehicle registration certificate Part I. The city lists these fees: €61.40 for two years, €30.70 for one year and €15.35 for half a year; a replacement costs €10.20. Further everyday topics can be found in the guide to living in Braunschweig.
