Moving to Hildesheim: cathedral city on the Innerste

Guide

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 280 km via the A2, the A39 and the A7 to Hildesheim.

A move to Hildesheim takes you to the county town of the district of the same name, around 30 kilometres south-east of Hanover on the Innerste. World-famous are St Mary's Cathedral with the Thousand-Year Rose Bush and St Michael's Church, both UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1985. The city consists of 14 districts – from Stadtmitte and Neustadt via Moritzberg and Oststadt to former villages such as Sorsum or Einum. For your private move we clarify access, floor and parking space in advance.

We start in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 280 km via the A2, the A39 and the A7 to Hildesheim; including the statutory break that is about 3.5 hours, with loading and unloading on the same day. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Hildesheim or back to Berlin, we quote the fixed price after a survey. In Hildesheim you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). More on this under Moving Berlin – Hildesheim.

What we take care of when you move to Hildesheim

Planning in Berlin, arrival in Hildesheim

We have no branch in Hildesheim; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a period building on the Moritzberg or a house in Ochtersum. In Hildesheim the parking restriction zone is granted by the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde); according to the city, the application must be made 14 working days in advance, separately for the move-out and move-in addresses. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

Packing service

We pack crockery, books and electronics for the journey of around 280 km and label every box by its destination room in Hildesheim – with our packing service.

We take care of every detail

A move to Hildesheim raises many questions: which district suits you, how early must the parking restriction be applied for, do you need two applications for moving out and moving in, and how does registration work at the Stadtbüro (city office)? This guide presents the 14 districts and sums up what the city of Hildesheim says about parking restrictions and registration. On top of that comes the journey of around 280 km from Berlin via the A2, A39 and A7. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Planning safely and calmly

With a schedule planned backwards from moving-in day – notice, registration, packing dates – your private move, senior move or student move to Hildesheim stays manageable, even over around 280 km.

Furniture, boxes, carrying routes

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and a parking space arranged in advance, furniture reaches even a period building on the Moritzberg or a house in Ochtersum in Hildesheim without long carrying distances. We measure bulky items beforehand.

Costs, timing and special cases

Costs are determined by volume, floor and the route of around 280 km; for small volumes a part load lowers the price. For businesses, we plan the office move to Hildesheim with its own schedule.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to Hildesheim

Costs, districts, route, registration and liability – answered briefly.
The cost of a move to Hildesheim depends on the size of the flat, the floor, access and the route – from Berlin it is around 280 km. You will find our guide prices by number of rooms and the price per kilometre in the price overview on this page. After a free survey you receive a binding fixed price in which additional services such as packing, parking restriction or assembly are listed separately.

Hildesheim's 14 districts

According to its main statutes, Hildesheim consists of 14 localities or districts: Stadtmitte/Neustadt, Marienburger Höhe with the Galgenberg, Moritzberg, Nordstadt with Steuerwald, Oststadt with the Stadtfeld, Achtum-Uppen, Bavenstedt, Drispenstedt, Einum, Himmelsthür, Itzum-Marienburg, Neuhof/Hildesheimer Wald/Marienrode, Ochtersum and Sorsum.

The city centre with the cathedral, St Michael's Church and the market square is densely built up, and period buildings without a lift are common here and in the Oststadt. On the outskirts, for example in Ochtersum, Itzum or Sorsum, detached and terraced houses predominate. For the move, the specific address therefore matters: we clarify floor, stairwell and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private move service adapts to this.

Three universities, a diocese and World Heritage

Hildesheim is a regional centre, the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Hildesheim and has been a city with over 100,000 inhabitants (Großstadt) since 1974. Three higher education institutions are based here: the Stiftung Universität Hildesheim, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HAWK) and the Norddeutsche Hochschule für Rechtspflege. Accordingly, many people move to the city at the start of the semester. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.

The cathedral and the abbey church of St Michael are among the most important buildings of the early Romanesque period; the Thousand-Year Rose Bush on the cathedral apse is regarded as the city's landmark. The Hildesheimer Wald forest begins south of the city. If you are arriving at the start of a semester or a new job, you should plan the move early – according to the city, the parking restriction needs 14 working days' lead time. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

Applying for a parking restriction for your move in Hildesheim

In Hildesheim, the city's road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde; Traffic and Contributions Department, Markt 3, 31134 Hildesheim) grants permission for a parking restriction zone. According to the city of Hildesheim, the application must be made at least 14 working days before the planned measure. In the application you state your name, current registered address, new address, a telephone number on which you can be reached during the day, street and house number, the moving day and the period required. You need a separate traffic order for each of the move-in and move-out addresses.

The traffic signs may only be put up once the permit has been received. After applying, you receive a road traffic order that entitles you to put them up. According to the city, there must be three full days between putting up the signs and any towing. The fee range starts at €12.00 per day. If there is already an absolute no-stopping zone at the desired spot, an exemption permit is also required.

You submit the application (“Antrag ambulantes Haltverbot”) by e-mail ([email protected]), by fax or in writing by post; the authority answers queries on 05121 301-3144. Plan the deadlines backwards from moving day, as 14 working days amount to around three weeks' lead time. On request we take care of the parking restriction zone and coordinate the dates with your moving day.

Re-registering at the Hildesheim Stadtbüro: deadline, documents and online registration

According to the city, registration in Hildesheim must take place within two weeks of moving into the flat. The Stadtbüro (city office) in the administrative building, Markt 2, 31134 Hildesheim, is responsible. Personal visits are only possible with an appointment. You can reach the Stadtbüro by telephone on 05121 301-2700 or by e-mail at [email protected]; the city gives the telephone hours as Monday and Tuesday 7:30 am to 3:00 pm, Wednesday and Friday 7:30 am to 12:00 noon and Thursday 7:30 am to 6:00 pm.

To register, you need a landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord; the city provides a template as a PDF. According to the city, there are no fees for registration, and booking an appointment helps to avoid waiting times. According to the city, late registration can be punished with a fine.

Hildesheim also offers electronic residence registration. It requires an ID card with the online ID function activated (or an eID card with PIN), a BundID account, the AusweisApp and an NFC-enabled smartphone or tablet. The online route only applies to main or sole residences and is usually processed within three working days.
