Living in Hildesheim: Districts Rents & Studying

Hildesheim for New Residents
Hildesheim: Cathedral, St Michael's and Three Universities on the Innerste
Settling in, not just moving
Hildesheim lies around 30 kilometres south-east of Hanover on the Innerste river and has been a city of over 100,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the district of Hildesheim since 1974. St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church are among the most important early Romanesque buildings and have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1985; the Thousand-Year Rose grows on the cathedral apse. The historic market square with the Knochenhaueramtshaus (Butchers' Guild Hall) was rebuilt from 1984 to 1989. The city is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Hildesheim and a regional centre in Lower Saxony; since 2014 it has also been the seat of the regional commissioner for the Leine-Weser area.
With the University of Hildesheim, HAWK and the North German University of Applied Sciences for the Administration of Justice, the city has three higher education institutions. For newcomers, the first tasks are an appointment at the city office, the flat search and the commute. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Hildesheim. Our page Moving Berlin – Hildesheim describes the route from Berlin – around 280 km via the A2, A39 and A7.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Hildesheim
Old town, access, floor
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Hildesheim-based firm. That is why we ask precise questions before moving day: how can the lorry reach the building – for example half-timbered houses in the Neustadt or on the Moritzberg – is there a lift, is a parking restriction zone needed? Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give the price after the survey as a fixed price. More under Private move.

Hildesheim
for Newcomers
A move to Hildesheim comes with a few tasks: the appointment at the city office on the market square, the search for nursery or school places and the choice of district – whether half-timbering in the Neustadt, Wilhelminian-era buildings in the Oststadt or the 1920s and 1930s estates on the Marienburger Höhe. If you are coming from further afield, you will find information on long routes under Long-distance moves. On request we take care of the parking restriction zone, furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet available – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Hildesheim
14 Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Hildesheim
According to its main statute, Hildesheim consists of 14 localities and districts: Stadtmitte and Neustadt, Marienburger Höhe with Galgenberg, Moritzberg, Nordstadt, Oststadt with Stadtfeld, Achtum-Uppen, Bavenstedt, Drispenstedt, Einum, Himmelsthür, Itzum-Marienburg, Neuhof/Hildesheimer Wald/Marienrode, Ochtersum and Sorsum. Most of the city lies on the right bank of the Innerste, and to the south the Hildesheimer Wald forest begins.
Half-timbered houses stand mainly in the Neustadt and on the Moritzberg, for example in Keßlerstraße or on the Brühl. In the districts around the city centre, such as the Oststadt, Wilhelminian-era architecture predominates; the Marienburger Höhe has many buildings from the 1920s and 1930s. Achtum-Uppen, Einum and Sorsum are former villages on the edge of the city. Where you live determines your bus line, route to school and carrying route on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.
For Achtum-Uppen, Bavenstedt and Drispenstedt, the city lists their own local councils. According to the main statute, Bavenstedt extends beyond the A7, and Himmelsthür up to the Innerste. Before signing the tenancy agreement, check which district your address belongs to, as many of the city's services are organised accordingly.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Hildesheim
According to Wikipedia, important companies in the city include Robert Bosch GmbH, St. Bernward Krankenhaus, Helios Klinikum Hildesheim, Sparkasse Hildesheim, the KSM Castings Group, Petrofer, Medifox DAN and Howmet Aerospace. Hildesheim is the seat of the Catholic diocese and of the district. You can study at the University of Hildesheim Foundation, HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the North German University of Applied Sciences for the Administration of Justice.
For leisure there is the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum with its ancient Egyptian collection, the City History Museum in the Knochenhaueramtshaus, the Kehrwieder Tower as the last surviving defensive tower and seven nature reserves within the city, including the Innerste floodplain. In June the city celebrates the Magdalenenfest, and in July the university holds its Midsummer Night at the Domäne Marienburg. Hildesheim main station is an ICE stop with direct trains to Berlin. We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source – compare offers on portals and from housing companies and view in person if possible. If you commute a lot, look for proximity to the main station or city bus lines; night buses run to the surrounding area on Fridays and Saturdays.

Registering in Hildesheim: City Office on the Market Square, by Appointment Only
If you move into a flat in Hildesheim, under § 17(1) of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz) you must register within two weeks of moving in. The responsible office is the city office (Stadtbüro) of the city of Hildesheim at Markt 2, 31134 Hildesheim. According to the city, it handles registration of main and secondary residences and changes of address, as well as ID cards and passports, certificates of good conduct and certifications, among other things.
Important: the city office can only be visited by appointment. Book it online via stadt-hildesheim.de/termin; the city does not want appointment requests by email. You can reach the city office by phone on 05121 301-2900:
- Monday to Wednesday 8:00–14:00
- Thursday 8:00–16:00
- Friday 8:00–12:00
Your landlord must cooperate. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the landlord confirms the move-in in writing or electronically. The confirmation states the name and address of the landlord and, if they are not the owner, the owner as well, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register.
It is best to book the appointment as soon as the move-in date is fixed, so that the two weeks do not get tight. The city office's page does not say which other documents it requires; if in doubt, ask by phone. The Digital Town Hall at serviceportal.stadt-hildesheim.de offers further online services. For the city in general, read Moving in Hildesheim.
Hildesheim's Districts at a Glance: from Stadtmitte to Himmelsthür
The city of Hildesheim organises its district pages into 14 areas. If you are looking for a flat, you should assign the address to one of them:
- Achtum / Uppen
- Bavenstedt
- Drispenstedt
- Einum
- Himmelsthür
- Itzum / Marienburg
- Marienburger Höhe / Galgenberg
- Moritzberg / Bockfeld
- Neuhof / Hildesheimer Wald / Marienrode
- Nordstadt
- Ochtersum
- Oststadt / Stadtfeld
- Sorsum
- Stadtmitte / Neustadt
For Achtum / Uppen, Bavenstedt and Drispenstedt, the city links to their own local councils. For Achtum / Uppen and Bavenstedt it also lists meeting dates there. Before signing the tenancy agreement, check which district your address belongs to, as many of the city's services are organised by these areas. Whether Stadtmitte / Neustadt, Nordstadt or Oststadt / Stadtfeld suits you better depends on your commute, schools and budget; reliable rent figures are found in a rent index, not in rules of thumb. The district overviews in the extract we checked give no population or rent figures, so we do not list any figures here.
If you are moving to the city centre around the market square, clarify space for the removal van early. We have not found any specific guidance from the city on this. Ask the city or have a parking restriction zone set up for moving day. Costs and districts are also explained in the Hildesheim moving guide.
