Moving to Oldenburg: your guide to the cycling city in the north-west
Arriving well
With around 170,000 inhabitants, Oldenburg is the regional centre between Bremen and the North Sea coast – with a historic city centre, the palace gardens (Schlossgarten) and a lot of cycling traffic. If you are planning a move to Oldenburg, you will find short distances, a wide range of culture around the Oldenburg State Theatre (Oldenburgisches Staatstheater) and districts from the Dobbenviertel to Kreyenbrück. We are based in Berlin, around 434 km away, and plan your move with Beste Umzug Unternehmen from the survey to the last box. Around 434 km of motorway means: loading in the morning and unloading on the same day is very doable for a normal household – provided the no-parking zone and the key handover are coordinated.
We state the fixed price after the survey; our liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available. Whether it is a student room in Haarentor or a detached house in Bümmerstede – our home move service adapts to you. For companies moving to Oldenburg, we plan office furniture and IT to the exact date. Our locations overview shows further destinations, and we describe long routes under Long-distance moves.

In Oldenburg the range stretches from Gründerzeit villas in the Dobbenviertel and terraced houses in Bloherfelde to new neighbourhoods such as the Lebensquartier Haarentor. During the survey we clarify the floor, lift and access and plan the no-parking zone in good time; the city's road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde) is responsible. We state the fixed price afterwards. Our liability is under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. Frequently asked questions about living in and moving to Oldenburg
Districts at a glance: where to live well in Oldenburg
The city centre and the neighbouring Dobbenviertel impress with Gründerzeit villas, cafés and short walks to the palace gardens – ideal for anyone who values an urban feel. Families, on the other hand, often head for Bloherfelde or Bümmerstede, where terraced houses, schools and nurseries in quiet surroundings predominate.
Osternburg and Kreyenbrück score with affordable housing and good connections to the university and the hospital, which is why they are popular with students and nursing staff. If you prefer something more rural, Ohmstede and Krusenbusch offer plenty of greenery and still quick connections to the centre.
Job market and quality of life in Oldenburg
As the headquarters of EWE AG and numerous medium-sized companies in the energy and services sector, Oldenburg offers a stable job market. The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, with its focus on renewable energies and educational sciences, also attracts thousands of students to the city every year.
The high quality of life shows in short commuting times, numerous cycle paths and a wide range of leisure activities along the Hunte. This mix of work, education and recreation makes Oldenburg an attractive destination for people moving from all over Germany.
Moving prices by flat size
Whether a small 1-room flat from €344 or a spacious 4-room flat from €1,289 – the costs depend on the scope of your move to Oldenburg. A 2-room flat costs from €609, a 3-room flat from €909. For houses and villas we prepare an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €4.10/km. You will find out your personal price after a free survey.

Moving to Oldenburg: no-parking zones, parking and access in the districts
Oldenburg is growing in several neighbourhoods at the same time. According to the city, construction of the Lebensquartier Haarentor residential neighbourhood has begun, and the first construction phase of the neighbourhood renewal on Stiller Weg is due to be completed in summer 2027. If you are moving in or near a building site, you should check access for the removal van in advance.
The city also lists district centres, including Bloherfelde, Donnerschwee, Ofenerdiek, Osternburg, Nadorst-Nord, Alexanderstraße-Nord, Edewechter Landstraße, Mittlere Hundsmühler Straße and Westkreuz. According to the city, they are intended to strengthen local supply, social services and the quality of public spaces. For your planning this means: expect more activity around these centres.
A no-parking zone for moving day is ordered by the road traffic authority under § 45 StVO. We could not verify the lead time and fee on the City of Oldenburg's pages and therefore do not state them. You can reach the responsible contacts via the ServiceCenter on 0441 235-4444 (Monday to Friday, 7 am to 6 pm) or the public-authority number 115.
On the timetable:
- Apply for the no-parking zone as soon as the date is fixed.
- On narrow residential streets, clarify in advance where the van can stop.
- How we support the application is described under No-parking zone.

Registering in Oldenburg: ServiceCenter, appointments and welcome bonus
Under § 17 (1) BMG you must register within two weeks of moving in. On its housing page, the City of Oldenburg lists registration of your main residence (Wohnsitz) among the most-used services. Appointments can be booked via online scheduling for all departments in the service portal; questions are answered by the ServiceCenter on 0441 235-4444, Monday to Friday from 7 am to 6 pm, and by the public-authority number 115.
Of interest to students and trainees: according to the city, there is a welcome bonus of 100 euros when you register a new main residence. The page does not give the conditions in detail; read them in the service portal before you move. If you are moving at the start of term, our student move can help.
The city also offers guidance for the flat search: the Oldenburg rent index 2025 (update) has applied since 10 October 2025. It updates the 2023 version. If you have a flat in view, you can use it to check whether the rent matches the usual local comparative rent.
Under § 19 BMG the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) is issued by the landlord or a person they have authorised. Ask for it in good time so that your registration does not fail because of the deadline.
