Frequently asked questions about moving in Hanover
For a 2-room flat within Hanover, for example from the List to the Südstadt, we calculate moves from €589. The exact price depends on the floor, lift and amount of furniture and is finally confirmed after a free survey.
Moving in Hanover: the process between the Leine, the exhibition grounds and the expressways
As the state capital of Lower Saxony with around 523,000 inhabitants, the city on the Leine is an important centre for business, trade fairs and higher education. Anyone moving here benefits from good infrastructure but has to bear in mind the particular features of a big city. The Hanover exhibition grounds are the second-largest in the world; during major trade fairs such as the Hannover Messe, traffic increases, which can also affect moving dates and free parking spaces.
With us, a move in Hanover begins with a free survey by video or by arrangement, in which we assess the amount of furniture, floor, lift and access. Our team comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 285 kilometres via the A2. Many streets in the city centre, the List or Linden are narrow and partly one-way, so we plan the approach and, where necessary, a parking restriction zone early. The A2 and A7 run through the city, plus the A37 and A352; the West, South and Messe expressways ring the centre. Within the city, roadworks and 30 km/h zones need to be factored in.
On moving day we work to a fixed procedure: protecting floors and staircases, dismantling furniture, loading according to plan and prompt transport to the new address. Especially in districts with Gründerzeit buildings, for example in the Südstadt or the Zooviertel, narrow staircases and missing lifts are not unusual – here we plan enough carriers. Access can also be restricted around the Maschsee lake and along the Leine; we check this in advance based on your address. This way your Hanover move is organised smoothly from the first enquiry to the last box.
Districts and residential areas for your move in Hanover
Hanover is divided into 13 districts of very different character, which has a direct effect on the effort involved in a move. In the List and in Vahrenwald, period flats with high ceilings but often without a lift dominate, while Kirchrode, Bemerode and Kleefeld are characterised more by detached houses and quiet residential areas with gardens. Anyone moving from lively Linden-Limmer, with its student and creative scene, to the quieter Südstadt or to Waldheim often finds a marked change of setting within just a few kilometres.
The districts of Döhren-Wülfel, Ricklingen and Badenstedt are also popular with families, while in Herrenhausen-Stöcken the Herrenhausen Gardens and commercial areas lie close together. The Nordstadt scores with its proximity to Leibniz University Hannover and is correspondingly characterised by shared flats, while Misburg-Anderten and Bothfeld-Vahrenheide lie more on the edge of the city with more new-build areas.
| District | Character | Typical challenge |
|---|---|---|
| List / Vahrenwald | Gründerzeit, urban | Narrow staircases, little parking |
| Südstadt / Zooviertel | Upmarket, quiet | Period buildings without a lift |
| Linden-Limmer | Student, alternative | Narrow streets, flat-share moves |
| Kirchrode / Bemerode | Family-oriented, detached houses | Large amounts of furniture |
| Herrenhausen-Stöcken | Gardens and businesses | Check access for each address |
For each of these locations we calculate realistic time windows and suitable vehicles, so that your private move in Hanover matches the district exactly.
Moving costs in Hanover: transparent prices
The cost of a move in Hanover depends on the size of the flat, floor, distance and additional services. The following guide values serve as a rough orientation, which we refine individually after a free survey:
| Flat size | Starting price |
|---|---|
| 1-room flat | from €344 |
| 2-room flat | from €589 |
| 3-room flat | from €884 |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €4.15/km |
| Parking restriction zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These prices are entry-level values for standard moves without special features. The following factors, among others, feed into the calculation:
- Floor and whether there is a lift
- Carrying distance between front door and vehicle, especially in the narrow streets of period buildings in the List or Linden
- Amount of furniture and bulky items such as pianos or built-in wardrobes
- Additional services such as a packing service or clearance
- A parking restriction zone required for smooth access
For districts with difficult access, for example in the densely built Calenberger Neustadt or around the main station, we realistically allow a little more time for loading and unloading. If you also need piano transport, let us know early so that we can plan the right equipment and enough staff – details can be found under piano transport. Our aim is to give you a fair fixed-price offer that already takes into account all Hanover-specific conditions, so that there are no unpleasant surprises on moving day.
Parking restriction zone, residents' parking zone and parking in Hanover
Especially in densely populated quarters such as the List, the Nordstadt or Linden-Limmer, the parking situation in Hanover is tight. Many streets are designated for residents' parking, so on moving day there is often no space free directly in front of the door. To avoid long carrying distances, you need a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone): according to the city, the exemption permit is issued by the road traffic authority at Rundestraße 6 or a citizens' office, and the signs are issued by the municipal sign rental service.
According to our price list, the costs of a parking restriction zone are between €30 and €100 per day depending on the stretch of road and duration. It is usually worth it because it:
- secures short carrying distances from the vehicle to the front door
- avoids parking fines for the removal van
- speeds up the whole move and thus saves costs
- is often the only solution in narrow streets of period buildings, such as in the Südstadt or the Zooviertel
In the centre, too, for example near the Kröpcke or in the Calenberger Neustadt, expect high parking density. If your flat is in a residents' parking zone, the city says the removal van always needs an exemption permit to park there – even without a parking restriction. For properties with an underground car park or rear courtyard access, we check the clearance height and turning space in advance. During the Hannover Messe, particularly early planning is advisable, as trade fair visitors generate additional traffic. How the application and sign rental work in detail is set out below in the section on Rundestraße; you can find more about our service on the parking restriction zone page.
Moving between Hanover, Berlin and Lower Saxony
The A2 and A7 motorways run through Hanover, plus the A37 and A352. This gives the city good connections to the trunk road network. From Hanover to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit it is around 285 road kilometres, mostly via the A2. For long-distance moves our price list states from €4.15 per kilometre; the fixed price after a survey is binding and takes into account distance, load volume and any intermediate stops.
If you only want to transport a few items of furniture, you can request a part load: your furniture then travels together with other consignments on a route that is already planned – economical above all on the route between Hanover and Berlin or within Lower Saxony.
We also handle moves between Hanover and other cities in Lower Saxony, including to:
Whether a move within the Hanover region or right across Germany – we plan the route, breaks and arrival window in advance and with the same care as a move within the city.
Our services for your move in Hanover
As a moving company from Berlin-Moabit, we offer a complete range of services for Hanover, from flat clearance to office moves. We set vehicles, staff and scheduling for your district after the survey – from the Nordstadt to Misburg.
Our core services in Hanover include:
- Private move for flats and houses of any size
- Office move including IT and file logistics
- Part load for smaller transports and long distances
- Clearance of cellars, attics and entire flats
- Parking restriction zone for stress-free loading and unloading
- Piano transport with special equipment
- Senior move with particularly considerate support
- Student move for rooms in shared flats and first flats
Especially in districts with many period buildings, for example in the List or the Zooviertel, we plan enough carriers to move heavy pieces of furniture safely even through narrow staircases. In the new-build areas of Bemerode or Kronsberg, often with lifts and modern connections, the focus is frequently on particularly efficient scheduling of several moves on the same day. For sensitive items such as pianos, artworks or file archives, we provide suitable packaging and securing techniques. We are happy to look into short-notice requests in the Hanover region; because we travel from Berlin, we tell you honestly whether the date will work. This way you get all services for your move in Hanover from a single source – reliably and with fair pricing.
Planning an office or company move in Hanover
Hanover is home to numerous large companies and institutions, for example in the insurance, travel and industrial sectors, and with the second-largest exhibition grounds in the world it is an important trade fair location. A company move in this economically dynamic city requires precise planning so that operations are disrupted as little as possible. We handle office moves from individual departments to complete relocations, for example at the Expo Plaza or around the main station.
The scope of services for your office move in Hanover includes, among other things:
- Dismantling and assembly of office furniture, shelving systems and reception desks
- Safe packing and transport of IT equipment and server cabinets
- File logistics in line with data protection requirements
- Move planning outside core working hours or at the weekend
- Coordination of parking restriction zones in busy commercial areas
Especially during the Hannover Messe or other major events, the traffic situation around the exhibition grounds and the Messeschnellweg is particularly tight. We therefore prefer to plan office moves outside these peak times or agree delivery times closely with the facility management of the property concerned. For companies with several sites in Lower Saxony, for example with branches in Braunschweig or Wolfsburg, we also coordinate multi-stage moving projects from a single source. With careful staff, suitable equipment and a clear schedule, we make sure your company is fully operational again as quickly as possible at the new location in Hanover – with minimal downtime and maximum transparency on costs.
Student moves in Hanover: process and booking
With Leibniz University Hannover, Hochschule Hannover and the medical and veterinary universities, the city is an important higher education location. Demand for straightforward student moves is correspondingly high, especially in the Nordstadt, Linden-Limmer and Calenberger Neustadt, where many rooms in shared flats and small apartments are located. Our student move offer is specially tailored to smaller loads, narrow staircases and usually limited budgets.
Booking with us is deliberately kept simple:
- Non-binding enquiry online or by phone, stating room size and preferred date
- Brief assessment of floor, lift and access options, for example in the narrow streets of the List or Linden
- Transparent fixed-price offer without hidden costs
- Confirmation of the date and, if necessary, setting up a parking restriction zone
- Carrying out the move including transport of boxes, furniture and bicycles if needed
For students moving into their first flat of their own after graduating, for example in Kleefeld or Vahrenwald, we also offer suitable packages with optional packing and furniture assembly. If short-term interim storage is needed during the semester, we can combine the move with a small clearance of old furniture from the previous accommodation. For families accompanying their children to Hanover at the start of their studies, and for older relatives who want to move closer to the family as a result, our senior move service is also available. This way we support moves in Hanover through every stage of life – quickly, fairly priced and with an eye for the student reality of tight time windows and budgets.
Applying for a parking restriction in Hanover: Rundestraße, service portal and sign rental
If there is no space for the removal van in front of the building in Hanover, you need an exemption permit in advance. According to the state capital, it is issued by the road traffic authority at Rundestraße 6 or a citizens' office. You can also submit the application for a parking restriction via the city's service portal. The legal basis for the exemption is § 46 of the Road Traffic Regulations (Straßenverkehrsordnung).
The permit alone does not put up any signs. Within its civil engineering department, Hanover runs a sign rental service (Burgweg 14-16B), which issues traffic signs and barriers for moves, among other things. Opening hours are limited, and there are closing days around the turn of the year. Collect the signs early, therefore. The sign rental page does not state deadlines and fees; ask by phone on +49 511 168-47657 or by email at [email protected]. Several citizens' offices also list the service “Haltverbot für einen Umzug beantragen” (apply for a parking restriction for a move).
Anyone moving in a residents' parking zone always needs, according to the city, an exemption permit for removal vehicles to park in the residents' parking zone, even if no parking restriction is required. The city also recommends recording in writing the date, time and person who put up the signs once they are in place. How we plan loading times around your approved period is described under parking restriction zone.
Hanover: 13 districts, re-registration and free bulky waste collection
The state capital groups its 51 neighbourhoods into 13 districts, each with its own district council. The Linden-Limmer district includes Limmer, Linden-Mitte, Linden-Nord and Linden-Süd; the Mitte district comprises Calenberger Neustadt, Mitte, Oststadt and Zoo. You can find prices and residential areas compared in the guide to moving to Hanover.
Re-registration: registration or re-registration is required within 14 days of moving in. Hanover offers electronic residence registration with the online ID function and the AusweisApp; tenants upload the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). According to the city, online registration applies to adults and to a new main residence. Alternatively, book an appointment at the citizens' office; for re-registrations, the appointment confirmation already counts as proof that you met the deadline.
Bulky waste: the aha waste management association collects up to 5 m³ of bulky waste free of charge. Individual items may be at most 2 m long and 75 kg heavy. You register the date via the hotline (0800) 999 11 99 or online; on collection day the bulky waste must be at the roadside by 6 am. Electrical appliances, construction waste and glass are not included. The recycling centres accept up to 1 m³ per day free of charge. Further everyday tips for new residents are available in the guide for newcomers.
