Szczecin (Stettin) as your new home: districts everyday life, offices

Living in Szczecin
Living between the Chrobry Embankment and Lake Dąbie
Neighbourhoods, everyday life, offices
A move to Szczecin (Stettin) takes you to the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship: just under 400,000 inhabitants, the seventh-largest city in Poland and only around 125 kilometres from Berlin as the crow flies. The city is divided into four boroughs – Śródmieście, Północ, Zachód and Prawobrzeże – with 37 districts in total. Around the old town on the West Oder lies the late-19th-century new town; landmarks are the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle, St James's Cathedral and the Chrobry Embankment (Hakenterrasse) above the river.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and bring your household goods to Szczecin via the A11. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your removal goods under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is possible on request. Our home move includes packing, transport and furniture assembly. Because Poland is part of the EU, there is no customs duty on your household goods. The overview of our service areas shows which other destinations we drive to regularly.

Szczecin:
what to clarify before the move
Before the move to Szczecin there are three questions: in which of the 37 districts do you want to live, when do you register at the municipal office, and where does the removal van stop? According to gov.pl, EU citizens have 30 days to register; you should bring your ID and tenancy agreement. Whether a full load or a part load is cheaper we decide based on the volume. This way everything is settled before the removal van arrives in Szczecin.

Frequently asked questions about living in Szczecin
Szczecin’s districts from Pogodno to Dąbie
The core is formed by the old town (Stare Miasto) on the West Oder and the late-19th-century new town with its perimeter blocks – together a densely built-up inner-city area about three kilometres across. Here you live close to the Chrobry Embankment, the Philharmonic and the main station. To the west lie Turzyn and Pogodno, the former Braunsfelde villa colony, with the Arkona Forest Park to the north; to the south lies Pomorzany with the Wzgórze Hetmańskie prefab housing estate.
On the right bank, in the Prawobrzeże borough, lie Dąbie and Podjuchy on the edge of the Beech Forest (Puszcza Bukowa), with Lake Dąbie (Jezioro Dąbie) to the north. You will also find larger prefab housing estates in Niebuszewo and on the western edge of Pogodno. Which location suits you depends above all on whether short distances to the centre or greenery matter more to you.
Universities, port and everyday life in Szczecin
Szczecin is a university city with five state universities: the University of Szczecin, the West Pomeranian University of Technology, the Pomeranian Medical University, the Maritime University (Politechnika Morska, Akademia Morska until 2022) and the Academy of Art. Economically, the city is shaped by the seaport – together with Świnoujście the second-largest in Poland – shipyards such as Gryfia and Pomerania, and a growing services and IT sector.
We do not give rent figures here because they vary greatly by district, year of construction and fittings; current offers can be found on the Polish property portals. In everyday life you reach Berlin via the A11 and by train via Angermünde, while the A6 and the S3 and S6 expressways lead into the surrounding region. For excursions, the Arkona Forest Park, the Beech Forest and the Szczecin Lagoon are close by.

Szczecin (Stettin): road authority ZDiTM and permit for road space
In Szczecin (Stettin), the Zarząd Dróg i Transportu Miejskiego (ZDiTM) manages the city's roads. This is where it is clarified whether the removal van may simply stop in front of the destination building or whether a permit to occupy road space ("zajęcie pasa drogowego") is needed. On the ZDiTM pages this permit is described for works, installations, advertising and building projects. The authority does not list a separate application specifically for removal vans there. Whether your case falls under it, for example if the carriageway or pavement is occupied beyond simple loading and unloading, you should therefore ask the ZDiTM directly.
This is what the ZDiTM states on deadlines, costs and the point of contact:
- Applications are accepted by the Biuro Obsługi Interesantów (customer service office), ul. Sebastiana Klonowica 5, 71-241 Szczecin.
- The application should be submitted at least one month in advance.
- The fee is based on council resolution No. XLVI/1268/23 of 24 January 2023 and is calculated from the area, the daily rate and the number of days.
- According to the ZDiTM, anyone occupying road space without the required permit pays ten times the fee due.
So plan the enquiry early, ideally right after agreeing the date. How we organise the route and process for moves to Poland can be read in the guide Long-distance move to Poland. How a parking restriction is applied for in Germany is explained in the guide Applying for a parking restriction zone.
Registration in Szczecin (Stettin), tolls and customs on the route from Berlin
After moving in, registering your residence (meldunek) is next in Szczecin. According to the information page gov.pl, EU and EFTA citizens must register at the municipal office (urząd gminy) of their place of residence no later than the 30th day after moving in. For citizens of other states a much shorter deadline of four days applies. According to gov.pl, registration itself is free of charge, while a certificate of temporary residence costs 17 złoty.
You should bring the registration form, a valid ID card or passport and proof of your right to the flat, such as the tenancy agreement. If you rent, the owner must confirm on the form that you live there.
On the route from Berlin to Szczecin, two points are relevant for a removal vehicle:
- For heavy vehicles, Poland's electronic toll system e-TOLL applies on the toll sections managed by the road authority GDDKiA. Before the journey we check, based on the information on etoll.gov.pl, whether and how the vehicle has to be registered.
- For customs, zoll.de describes the removal goods procedure for moves from non-EU countries. According to German customs, private individuals may bring goods from an EU country duty-free.
An overview of all the steps can be found in the moving checklist for Poland. Our International move service shows how we plan the route.
