Bamberg: World Heritage on Seven Hills by the Regnitz

The first few weeks

Unsere Firma brings your household goods from Berlin to Bamberg – around 405 km via the A9 and A70 – and reassembles them at the destination.

The old town of Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 – with the Bergstadt around the cathedral, the Inselstadt between the arms of the Regnitz and the market gardeners' quarter. The city is shaped by the Otto-Friedrich University, with more than 12,000 students, and has around 80,000 inhabitants; it is the largest city in Upper Franconia. Like Rome, Bamberg was built on seven hills, including the Domberg and Michaelsberg. There are still eight breweries in the city, and it is best known for its Rauchbier (smoked beer). If you are new here, you will find short distances and a relaxed pace.

The S-Bahn line S1 links Bamberg directly with Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg, which also makes the city attractive for commuters. Green spaces such as the Hain, the Röthelbachtal and the Erba island, site of the 2012 State Garden Show, provide places to relax. In the first weeks, what counts is registering within two weeks, finding a flat and a nursery or school place. For the transport we recommend our home removal service, which is geared to narrow old-town lanes and the slopes of the Domberg.

Bamberg
for Newcomers

One team, every service

When moving to Bamberg, many factors play a role: choosing the district, registering at the residents' registration office, re-registering your car and contracts, and planning the transport. In the old town, with its listed buildings, narrow staircases and scarce parking are a challenge that calls for good planning. The housing market in Bamberg also requires foresight, because popular areas such as Wunderburg or the Gärtnerstadt are taken quickly. We support you from the survey to the last box with our home removal offer.

Choosing a district

Inselstadt, Gaustadt or Bug: the address determines access, gradient and carrying distances. For a home removal, senior move or student move to Bamberg, we plan vehicle and team accordingly.

Organising moving day

With our packing service, furniture transport and, if needed, a small transport, the day stays manageable – we factor in the parking restriction in the old town early.

Businesses and special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public authority move, shared load or furniture taxi to Bamberg, we agree time windows, parking restriction and delivery in advance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Bamberg

Districts, rents, work, university, rail and daily life.
Families often live in quieter districts such as Wildensorg, Bug or Gaustadt, close to green spaces such as the Röthelbachtal and the Erba island. Parts of the Gärtnerstadt are also popular. Ask the city early about nursery and school places; the city buses serve almost the entire city.

Districts at a Glance: Where Is It Good to Live in Bamberg?

Bamberg is divided into districts such as Berggebiet, Mitte (Inselstadt), Theuerstadt with the Gärtnerstadt, Wunderburg, Gereuth, Nord, Ost, Gartenstadt, Bug, Gaustadt, Kramersfeld and Wildensorg. The Inselstadt between the arms of the Regnitz, with Little Venice, and the Berggebiet around the cathedral are part of the World Heritage Site; living here is historic, but with narrow access. The Gärtnerstadt, also part of the World Heritage Site, is shaped by vegetable growing within the city.

The 2012 State Garden Show was held on the site of the former ERBA cotton mill in Gaustadt; today the Erba island is a park. In the east, new housing is being built on the site of the Warner Barracks, which closed in 2014. Districts such as Wildensorg and Bug are quieter and greener. We do not quote specific rents, because we have no reliable current source. For students, locations near the university buildings in the old town are practical, while families tend to look at the greener districts on the outskirts. Before signing a tenancy agreement, check the route to the nearest bus stop and the station.

Housing Market, Employers and Cost of Living in Bamberg

The housing market in Bamberg is in demand; we do not quote rents without a reliable source. According to Wikipedia, important employers are the Bosch plant with around 6,300 employees (2022) and the Sozialstiftung Bamberg with the Klinikum (hospital) and over 5,000 staff, plus Wieland Electric and the Sparkasse. Relevant sectors are automotive suppliers, electrical engineering and the food industry. The Otto-Friedrich University has more than 12,000 students.

For commuters there is the S-Bahn line S1 to Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg, as well as regional trains; by car, the city is connected via the A70 and A73. With its World Heritage old town, brewing culture, the Hain and the Regnitz, the quality of life is high. According to Wikipedia, Bamberg is one of the 15 economically strongest regions in Bavaria and has over 800,000 overnight guests a year. If you plan early, you will find the right moving date and can settle in at your own pace.

In Bamberg, according to the City of Bamberg, the responsible office is the information desk of the Ordnungsamt (public order office), residents' registration section. You will find appointment booking for registration on the city's citizen services page.

Bring the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, it contains the name and address of the landlord, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the people required to register. The city's waste management is handled by Bamberg Service, waste disposal department (Margaretendamm 40, 96052 Bamberg). According to the city, residual waste is collected every two weeks, organic waste weekly and waste paper monthly. In addition, nappy sacks and discarded Christmas trees are collected, and garden waste twice a year. Local public transport is the responsibility of the Stadtwerke Bamberg. On the Stadtwerke's website you will also find current timetable changes and park-and-ride options. Check there before your moving day for roadworks notices affecting your line.
