Moving to Erlangen: your guide to the Siemens and university city
Planning and costs
Erlangen attracts many new residents every year: Siemens Healthineers and large parts of Siemens are based here, along with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) and the university hospital. Anyone moving here will find short distances, plenty of green space along the Regnitz meadows and a mix of university town and industry. The housing market is tight – so your moving date should be fixed early, as soon as the tenancy agreement is signed. With our private moving service we plan your move to Erlangen from the survey through to reassembly.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 444 km via the A9 to Bayreuth, then via the A70 and A73 to Erlangen; by lorry that takes about six and a half hours including a break. Important for planning: for traffic control measures such as a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone), the city states a lead time of at least four weeks. We build this buffer into the schedule. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including for the return route to Berlin. More on the route: Moving Berlin – Erlangen.

Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

We apply to the city for the parking restriction zone with the required lead time of at least four weeks. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible for valuable items. Your
move, our craft
The housing market in Erlangen is tight because Siemens, the university hospital and the FAU attract many people. Once you have found a flat, plan your moving date early, especially for the start of the semester in October, when many students move at the same time. For the parking restriction zone, the city states at least four weeks' lead time. For long distances you will find everything under long-distance moves – so you can concentrate on your job or the start of your studies. You register at the citizens' service on the ground floor of the town hall, within two weeks of moving in.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Erlangen
Erlangen's districts at a glance
Erlangen is divided into varied districts with very different characters. The city centre impresses with historic buildings, the palace garden (Schlossgarten) and short distances to the university and hospitals, but it is correspondingly expensive and short on flats. Röthelheimpark is regarded as a modern showcase neighbourhood with new builds on a former barracks site and is particularly popular with young families and Siemens employees. In Büchenbach and Bruck, on the other hand, you will find cheaper housing, good transport links and a more village-like feel, while Tennenlohe in the south, on the Knoblauchsland, is attractive for commuters heading to Nuremberg.
If you prefer things quieter, Alterlangen or Kriegenbrunn offer residential areas close to nature with good access to the Regnitz meadows. The Anger district scores with its proximity to the main station and is ideal for commuters to Nuremberg or Fürth. Whichever district you choose – we check access and floor in advance and plan your move to Erlangen precisely around your new address.
Why people move to Erlangen
Erlangen is far more than just a Siemens location: the city combines science, business and quality of life in a very small space. The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität attracts thousands of students every year, while international corporations such as Siemens Healthineers draw numerous highly qualified professionals to the region. Then there is the famous Erlanger Bergkirchweih, which attracts visitors from all over Germany every year and creates a lively sense of community.
The location is convincing too: Erlangen lies at the heart of the Nuremberg metropolitan region and is very well connected via the A3 motorway and Nuremberg Airport. Green spaces such as the Schlossgarten or the Regnitz meadows offer relaxation in the middle of the city. This mix of career opportunities, cultural life and high quality of life makes Erlangen a sought-after place to live.

What does a move really cost?
A realistic moving price is made up of several components: the volume of your household goods, the distance (from €3.90/km) and structural conditions such as the floor and a lift. A parking restriction zone may also be necessary. Optional services such as furniture assembly and a part load extend the offer.

Parking restriction zone in Erlangen: responsibility, lead time and access to the city centre
The City of Erlangen lists setting up a parking restriction zone in its service portal under "Umzug & Ausland" (moving & abroad). Traffic control measures are ordered by the Road Traffic and Roadworks department (Werner-von-Siemens-Straße 61, 91052 Erlangen). For orders under § 45 (1) and (2) StVO, the city generally states a lead time of at least 4 weeks. This information comes from the page on applying for roadworks, but it shows how early the authority expects applications. So plan your parking restriction application at least one month before moving day and state the street, house number, date and the length of space required.
- City centre: The city is working on a parking concept for the city centre. Before moving day, check the "Parken in Erlangen" (parking in Erlangen) page to see what applies to your street.
- Residents' parking: The service portal lists the residents' parking permit as a separate service ("Bewohnerparkausweis; Beantragung").
- Signs: Ask the road traffic authority who puts up the traffic signs and by when they must be in place.
If you wish, we will clarify these points together with you as part of our parking restriction zone service. You will find instructions in the guide Applying for a parking restriction zone. Our page Removal company Erlangen shows how we organise moves in the city.
Re-registration, city-centre bus and waste advice in Erlangen
You register after moving in at the citizens' service (Bürgerservice) on the ground floor of the town hall (Rathausplatz 1, 91052 Erlangen). According to the city, the counters are open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 6 pm and on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 am to 12 noon; you can reach the team by phone on 09131 86-1616. You can book an appointment online. The deadline is two weeks after moving in (§ 17 Federal Registration Act, BMG).
On moving days in the city centre, the bus can help: according to the City of Erlangen, the city-centre area between Werner-von-Siemens-Straße in the south and the Haagstraße and Schwabachanlage stops in the north, and from the bus station in the west to the Zollhaus stop in the east, can be used free of charge. The offer is a pilot project running from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2026. Journeys into or out of the area require a valid ticket. Helpers travelling in for the move can thus get into the city centre without their own car.
For questions about bulky waste and disposal, the city's waste advisory service can help (Schuhstraße 40, telephone 09131 86-2939, [email protected]). For young tenants at the university we have a dedicated student move; further everyday tips are in the guide Living in Erlangen.
