Arriving in Erlangen: University, Siemens and Huguenot Town
Life on the Regnitz
At the end of 2025, Erlangen had exactly 116,450 inhabitants, making it the smallest of Bavaria's eight major cities. The city is shaped by the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) with almost 40,000 students and by the technology group Siemens; almost one in four employees works in medical technology and healthcare. The Regnitz divides the city into two halves, and the Baroque Neustadt goes back to the Huguenots. This guide shows what newcomers take care of in the first weeks: registration, flat hunting, getting around by bike and bus, bulky waste.
We have no branch in Franconia; we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). It is around 444 km to Erlangen via the A9, A70 and A73, about six and a half hours by lorry including breaks. Whether a shared flat in the Altstadt, a flat at Röthelheimpark or a terraced house in Büchenbach: we plan the home removal at a fixed price after a survey. The route is described at Moving Berlin – Erlangen. We accept liability for damage under § 451e HGB.

A Fixed Price for Your Start in Erlangen
Surveyed, calculated, agreed
Whether as a doctoral student, Siemens employee or family: for your move to Erlangen, we look at your household goods, floor and access – on site in Berlin or by video call – and then give you a fixed price. Parking restriction, furniture lift and assembly are listed as separate items in the quote. Call us on 01625978461.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What we take care of for your start
Planned from Moabit
We have no location in Franconia; we drive in by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify beforehand what matters on arrival day: the one-way streets and the stairwell without a lift in the Altstadt, underground car park and lift in a new building at Röthelheimpark, access to a house in Büchenbach or Tennenlohe. We apply to the city for the parking restriction outside the new address. For your belongings we accept liability under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available.

Shared Load to Erlangen
If you are moving to study at FAU and are only furnishing a room in a shared flat, you can save with a shared load: your things travel together with other consignments towards Franconia. For this you need some flexibility on the delivery day. We clarify on the phone whether it is worthwhile for your volume.

To-dos
after moving in
After moving into Erlangen, you have two weeks to register. According to the city, this can be done at the Bürgerservice in the town hall even without an appointment, online with the online ID function or with a booked appointment. After that come nursery or school, the car and the first bulky waste collection, which you should book early. You get around by bike, city bus and S-Bahn; Erlangen has been promoting cycling since the 1970s. What the city itself states is set out in the sections below.

Questions from Newcomers in Erlangen
From the Altstadt to Tennenlohe: the Districts
Officially, Erlangen consists of nine districts and 40 statistical areas; the Regnitz divides the city into two halves from south to north, and the Main-Danube Canal runs through the west. After the fire of 1706, the Altstadt was rebuilt on the grid of the Baroque Neustadt, which had been laid out for Huguenots from 1686; the university's palace and palace garden are located there. The Röthelheimpark district was built on the site of the former US barracks, where Siemens also has production and offices.
Many districts were once separate places: Sieglitzhof joined the city in 1919, Büchenbach in 1923 and Bruck in 1924, followed in 1972 by Eltersdorf, Frauenaurach, Dechsendorf, Kriegenbrunn and Tennenlohe, among others. Residential areas are mostly designated 30 km/h zones, and almost all streets have cycle paths. If you want to live centrally, look in the Altstadt and the city centre; you will find more space and greenery in the outlying districts.
Jobs, Universities, Leisure
Siemens has shaped Erlangen since the post-war period; together with FAU, the university hospital, the Klinikum am Europakanal, the Waldkrankenhaus and over 100 medium-sized companies, Siemens Healthineers forms a centre for medicine and medical technology – almost one in four employees works in this field. In the 2023/24 winter semester FAU had around 39,600 students; the university hospital is a maximum-care hospital.
Leisure time includes the Bergkirchweih: a twelve-day folk festival around Whitsun with currently 15 beer cellars on the Burgberg. Then there are the palace garden, the Regnitz meadows and a dense network of separate cycle paths. Since 2010 the Bamberg–Nuremberg S-Bahn has run via Erlangen; in 2024 citizens voted for the construction of the Stadt-Umland-Bahn light rail to Nuremberg and Herzogenaurach. We do not give specific rents without a reliable source.

What does a move cost – and why?
Every move is calculated individually. The deciding factors are the volume of furniture, the distance (from €4.15/km) and the floor and lift situation. If a parking restriction zone is needed, the price rises slightly. With a shared load you can often save.

Registering Your Residence in Erlangen: Bürgerservice at the Town Hall, Deadline and Documents
According to the City of Erlangen, anyone moving to Erlangen must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. This also applies to moves within the city. Registration itself costs nothing; according to the city, anyone who misses the deadline risks a fine of up to 1,000 euros. Children under 16 are registered by the person in whose home they move; spouses and family members moving together can register using a joint form.
The responsible office is the Bürgerservice (citizens' service) on the ground floor of the town hall, Rathausplatz 1. According to the city, you do not need an appointment there; if you prefer to plan ahead, you can book an appointment online. It is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm, and Wednesday and Friday from 8 am to 12 noon. Registration in person is processed immediately. You should bring:
- the completed and signed registration form,
- ID card and/or passport of all persons to be registered,
- the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord or their electronic reference code,
- a power of attorney if someone else registers for you,
- a declaration on your main residence if you have more than one home.
Alternatively, you can register online if you use an ID card with the online function activated, an NFC-enabled smartphone and the AusweisApp. The registration office answers questions on 09131 86-1616. How to plan moving day itself is explained in our Erlangen moving guide.
Bulky Waste in Erlangen: Collection, Drop-off and Rules
After a move, bulky items are often left over. According to the City of Erlangen, every household can apply for a bulky waste collection at their home once a year, online, by phone, email, fax or web form. The waiting time is currently around six to eight weeks, so book early. You can reach the bulky waste scheduling office on 09131 86-2014 or -2015. The city's rules at a glance:
- a maximum of 10 m³ in total per collection,
- individual items no more than 2 m long, 1 m wide and 50 kg in weight,
- sorted in advance into wood, metal, electrical and other,
- put out clearly visible on the pavement or street no earlier than the day before and no later than 6:30 am on collection day.
Items not counted as bulky waste include building rubble and renovation waste, laminate and parquet, textiles, organic and garden waste, hazardous waste such as batteries, and car parts and tyres.
If you do not want to wait, take normal household quantities yourself to the waste transfer station, Am Hafen 5a. According to the city, private households can drop off there free of charge and without a bulky waste voucher; an ID showing an Erlangen address serves as proof. It is open Monday to Friday from 7 am to 12 noon and from 1 pm to 5 pm, and on Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm. If you need more help when moving out, you will find our house clearance and the moving service in Erlangen on our website.
