Guide for newcomers
Augsburg: The Fugger City Between the Lech and Wertach
The first few weeks
With almost 302,000 inhabitants, Augsburg is Bavaria's third-largest city after Munich and Nuremberg. The university city lies at the confluence of the Lech and Wertach; its historic water management system of canals, water towers and fountains has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. Augsburg is also known for the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing complex still in existence in the world, and for the robot manufacturer KUKA; it was here, at what was then the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg, that Rudolf Diesel developed the diesel engine. To get started, we recommend our home removal service.
The quality of life in Augsburg shows in the Siebentischwald forest with its Botanical Garden and in the Wittelsbacher Park, the largest green space in the built-up city area. The city consists of 42 districts in 17 planning areas, from the city centre to Haunstetten, where a new district, Haunstetten Südwest, is planned. Newcomers appreciate the short distances and a tram network of five lines around Königsplatz. If you are coming from another region, you will find everything about the route under long-distance moves.

Your Move from Berlin to Augsburg
Planning, transport, assembly
We set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 568 km to Augsburg via the A9, about eight and a half hours by lorry including a break. In the old town with its narrow lanes, we plan the parking restriction zone (Haltverbotszone) early; in new-build areas such as Haunstetten, access and lift. We give you the fixed price after a survey, with no hidden costs. That way you start out well organised in your new home city.

Augsburg
for Newcomers
A move to Augsburg involves some city-specific tasks, such as the narrow streets of the historic old town or registering at the Bürgerbüro within two weeks. For moving day you usually need a parking restriction zone, and certainly around the pedestrian zone at Rathausplatz. After that come the resident parking permit, re-registering your car and bulky waste via AWS. We handle the transport, so that you have time for these steps.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Augsburg
Districts at a Glance: Where to Live in Augsburg
The city centre around Rathausplatz and Maximilianstraße offers historic flair and short distances; according to city statistics, young newcomers prefer districts close to the centre. If you prefer things quieter, Göggingen, with its Art Nouveau Kurhaus, is an alternative for families.
Lechhausen east of the Lech and Oberhausen in the north are well connected to the city centre. The Univiertel (university quarter) is popular with students, while Haunstetten lies in the south, where a new district, Haunstetten Südwest, is planned for at least 10,000 people. We do not quote specific rents without a reliable source.
Jobs and Education: Opportunities in Augsburg
Augsburg is an important business location with an industrial tradition: at the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg, today MAN, Rudolf Diesel developed the diesel engine; today the robot manufacturer KUKA has its headquarters here. A major employer in healthcare is the University Hospital Augsburg, which opened in 1982 as the Zentralklinikum.
The University of Augsburg, founded in 1970, and the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg attract many students; every autumn the number of 18- to 25-year-olds rises as people move in. For students and young professionals, the city therefore offers good conditions.
Understanding moving costs at a glance
How much will my move cost? We are happy to answer that question: we move 1-room flats from €339, 2-room flats from €584, 3-room flats from €905 and 4-room flats from €1,289. For houses and villas, the price depends heavily on individual circumstances, which is why we prepare an individual quote here. Long-distance moves are no problem either – for these we charge from €3.80 per kilometre. The easiest way to clarify all the details is a free survey.
Calculating moving costs: the basics
If you want to estimate your moving price, consider volume, distance (from €3.80/km), floor and lift. A parking restriction zone can also add costs. Extra services such as furniture assembly and a shared load can be booked as options.

From Berlin to Augsburg – and Back
We set off from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive throughout Germany – to Augsburg it is around 568 km via the A9. Details of the route are on the page Moving Berlin – Augsburg; further destinations in the locations overview.
Registering in Augsburg: Bürgerbüro, Appointment and Deadline
According to the City of Augsburg, you have two weeks after actually moving in to register with the registration authority. This also applies when moving within the city. Registration is done in person or by an authorised person; it is no longer permitted by post. It is free of charge.
You need:
- the identity card and/or passport of everyone moving in
- the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord or, for owner-occupied property, a self-declaration (the confirmation can also be completed online and sent to the citizens' office)
- the ID cards or passports of any other family members moving in
- in individual cases, original certificates – foreign certificates with an official translation and, if necessary, an apostille
You book appointments at augsburg.de/buergerbueros or via the service phone line 0821 324-9999. The city's Bürgerbüros are in Stadtmitte, Haunstetten, Lechhausen, Kriegshaber and Hochzoll. If you have an online ID card with activated eID, you can also register your main residence digitally. For a second home the city levies a second-home tax; the Treasury and Tax Office provides information. For nationals of non-EU countries, the city mentions in an announcement an extension of the Bürgerbüros' responsibilities, but the appointment page points to restrictions. So ask by phone beforehand. Information as of October 2026.
An overview of the districts is in the Augsburg guide.
Daily Life in Augsburg: Resident Parking Permit and Bulky Waste
After registration comes the car. According to the City of Augsburg, you get the resident parking permit if your main residence is in a designated resident parking zone, you actually live there and you are the keeper of the vehicle or it has been made available to you in writing. For a permit valid for one year, the city states a fee of €30. You can apply online via the forms portal or at the Bürgerbüro, with appointments there on 0821 324-9999. If the car is not registered in your name, you need an informal declaration from the keeper, which according to the city only close relatives (parents, grandparents, children) can provide. Registration is therefore the first step; check the zone boundaries beforehand on augsburg.de.
For bulky waste, the waste management and street cleaning company AWS offers two free options:
- Collection by appointment: online via the form on aws.augsburg.de or by phone on 0821 324 4884. The city recommends applying several weeks before your preferred date.
- Drop it off yourself: at the recycling and service points Holzweg, Johannes-Haag-Straße, Oberer Auweg and Unterer Talweg. Opening hours are in the AWS customer information.
For moving day itself you usually need a parking restriction zone. How this works in practice is explained on our page on the parking restriction zone. More about moves to the city: Moves to Augsburg.
