Moving to Munich: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Munich
Moving to Munich – 25 city districts between the Isar and the ring road
Guide
A move to Munich takes you to the most populous city in Bavaria: with over 1.5 million inhabitants it is the third-largest municipality in Germany and the most densely populated. You notice this when moving – parking spaces outside period buildings are scarce, and a parking restriction is almost always part of the plan. We plan your private move or business move to suit access, floor and staircase and give you the fixed price after the survey.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 585 km, almost entirely on the A9; by lorry that is about 8.5 hours including breaks, so we usually plan two days. Whether it is a period flat in the Maxvorstadt, a flat in Schwabing or a house in Pasing: we clarify the floor and parking space in advance. The route is described under Move Berlin – Munich; further destinations are listed under Locations.

Moving to Munich: survey first, then a fixed price
Volume, floor, route – all in the price
We do not calculate the price of your move to Munich by the hour but by volume, floor, carrying routes and the distance of around 585 km. After a survey you receive a written fixed price – for a flat in the Maxvorstadt just as for a house in Pasing.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Munich works with us
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We have no branch in Munich; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in the Maxvorstadt or a house in Pasing. In Munich, a parking restriction for moving day is ordered by the city's road traffic authority (Mobilitätsreferat); we plan the application and lead time with you early on. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Part load: move affordably
Just a few pieces of furniture or a room in a shared flat? With a part load (Beiladung) to Munich, your household goods travel together with other consignments heading the same way. This lowers the costs; in return, a time window applies instead of a fixed day. We agree collection and delivery with you.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Munich raises its own questions: in which of the 25 city districts is the new flat, how does the lorry get into densely built streets of period buildings, who orders the parking restriction and how does registration at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) work? This guide explains how the city is divided, the rules for parking on moving day and the route via the A9. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Common questions about moving to Munich
City districts, neighbourhoods and quarters in Munich
In administrative terms, Munich is not divided into localities but exclusively into 25 city districts (Stadtbezirke); for statistical purposes these are subdivided into 105 district sections. In everyday life, however, people in Munich tend to refer to the historically grown neighbourhoods and quarters. At the centre lies the Altstadt-Lehel district; the Maxvorstadt was created in the early 19th century as the first planned extension of the city.
Other well-known neighbourhoods are Schwabing in the north and Pasing in the west. For the move, the specific address counts: in densely built streets of period buildings, parking spaces are scarce and carrying routes long, less so on the outskirts. Our private move service adapts to this.
Universities, metropolitan region and the Isar: who moves to Munich
Munich has two large universities, the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM); both have been funded as universities of excellence since 2007. The city is the centre of the Munich metropolitan region with around 6.2 million inhabitants and is regarded as a centre of culture, politics, science and media. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
After moving in, you register within two weeks; according to the city, registration is free of charge, in person at a citizens' office or online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de. If you are arriving for the start of a semester or a job, you should fix the moving day early. For routes from Berlin you will find everything under Long-distance moves.
Calculating moving costs: our price scale

|---|---|
| 1-room flat | from €375 |
| 2-room flat | from €584 |
| 3-room flat | from €889 |
| 4-room flat | from €1,269 |
| House/villa | individual quote |
| Long-distance move | from €4.20/km |
For exact details we recommend a free survey.
What affects the moving price?
The price of a move depends largely on the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged from €4.20/km. The floor, whether there is a lift and any required parking restriction zone also play a role. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load can also affect the price.

Moving to Munich: parking restriction, parking and access on moving day
If you want to park the removal van directly outside the front door in Munich, you should not leave parking to chance. Under § 45 StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations), the road traffic authorities decide where traffic signs are put up. A parking restriction for moving day can therefore only be set up via the responsible authority. How long the lead time is and what fee applies is set by the state capital Munich; we deliberately do not quote figures here that we cannot verify with the city. How we support the application is described under Parking restriction zone.
Regardless of the parking restriction, the Road Traffic Regulations also apply to your removal van:
- Under § 12 (3) StVO, parking is not permitted, among other places, in front of and behind crossroads and junctions or in front of entrances and exits to properties. On narrow roads this also applies opposite such entrances.
- Under § 12 (4) StVO, you must pull up to the right-hand edge of the road to park; in one-way streets, stopping and parking on the left is also permitted under certain conditions.
This is particularly relevant in densely built streets with period buildings: if the van can only find space at a narrow spot, the carrying routes become longer. So clarify in advance where the van should stand, and plan the route from the building entrance to it. What we offer for moves within Munich is described on the page Moving company Munich.
Re-registering in Munich: citizens' offices, documents and landlord confirmation
Under § 17 (1) BMG, you register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. On its page about registering a residence, the state capital Munich also states 14 days and advises completing registration as quickly as possible when moving to the city. According to the city, registration is free of charge.
In person, it is done at a citizens' office (Bürgerbüro); the city lists, among others, Pasing, Orleansplatz, Leonrodstraße, Scheidplatz, Forstenrieder Allee and Ruppertstraße. An authorised person can carry out the registration for you. Registration is possible online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de, but according to the city only for main residences; for a secondary residence you need an appointment.
The City of Munich lists the following documents:
- a valid identity document for all persons required to register
- the landlord's confirmation that you have moved into the flat (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); if it is missing, a declaration can be made instead
- if moving to Munich from elsewhere, your passport where applicable
- for a vehicle and a move within Munich, the registration certificate Part I and proof of a valid general inspection (Hauptuntersuchung); changing the address in the vehicle documents costs 12.60 euros
Under § 19 BMG, the landlord confirmation may only be issued by the landlord or a person they have authorised. So ask your landlord for it before the move. How a private move works with us is explained on the service page.
