Moving to Bamberg: Costs Process & Districts

Bamberg guide
Bamberg: hill town, island town, gardeners' town – and your new home
Districts, no-parking zone, registration
A move to Bamberg takes you to one of the few cities in Germany whose old town as a whole is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – since 1993, with the Bergstadt (hill town), Inselstadt (island town) and Gärtnerstadt (market gardeners' town). Between the Regnitz, seven hills and baroque façades, flats are often in old houses with narrow staircases. People who move here value short distances, the university and the beer culture with its many breweries. For the move, the exact address therefore matters: an old-town lane or a new-build estate on the edge of town.
Whether you are coming for a new job, to the University of Bamberg or for the quality of life – a well-thought-out moving plan saves time and nerves. We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 405 km via the A9 and A70; by lorry that takes about 6 hours including a break. We plan your private move from the survey to the last box at a fixed price. The route and driving time are described on the page Moving from Berlin to Bamberg.

What we take care of on your move to Bamberg
Transport from Berlin, planning for your address
Bamberg is characterised by narrow old-town lanes, cobblestones and limited stopping space. We have no branch in Bamberg but come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit; we therefore clarify access, floor and stairwell around the Domberg, Little Venice or the Inselstadt with you in advance. A no-parking zone requires an order from the traffic authority. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. That makes your move to Bamberg easy to plan.

From
the A70 to the registration office
From the flat search in the Gärtnerstadt to registration with the registration authority – a move to Bamberg brings many tasks. Register within two weeks of moving in and have the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) ready; on top of that come electricity, nursery and internet. Especially for a long-distance move from Berlin, early planning pays off, because a no-parking zone requires an order from the traffic authority.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Bamberg
Bamberg's districts at a glance
The World Heritage old town consists of the Bergstadt around the Domberg, the Inselstadt between the arms of the Regnitz with Little Venice and the Old Town Hall, and the Gärtnerstadt with its traditional gardeners' houses. Here you live in a listed monument, with narrow lanes and often without a lift. Wunderburg and Gereuth lie south of the centre, Bug on the Regnitz in the south.
In the west lie Gaustadt and Wildensorg, in the east the district of Bamberg-Ost and the Gartenstadt, and to the north Kramersfeld. Here there are more new buildings, shops and shorter routes to the A70 and A73. For students, proximity to the university buildings in the centre is important.
Housing market, employers and quality of life
Flats in the old town and around the Domberg are in demand; current property portals show how high rents are at the moment. If you are flexible, also look in Gaustadt, Bug or Bamberg-Ost. The region's major employers include industrial companies such as Bosch and Brose, the hospital, the city administration and the university.
The Otto-Friedrich University of Bamberg shapes the city's young life with cafés, pubs and festivals. Added to this are the UNESCO World Heritage Site, green spaces along the Regnitz and a lively food scene. With around 77,000 inhabitants Bamberg is manageable in size but offers plenty of culture, from the Domberg to the Sandkerwa festival. Nuremberg, Würzburg and Bayreuth are easy to reach via the A70, A73 and by rail. More about everyday life can be found in the guide for newcomers to Bamberg.

Factors that determine the moving price
First of all, volume counts – the more household goods, the greater the effort. Distance is charged from €3.80/km. The floor and a lift also play a role, as does a possible parking restriction zone. We are happy to add furniture assembly or a shared load.

No-parking zone and exemption permit for your move in Bamberg
For a move in Bamberg, the city's traffic authority in the road traffic office (Straßenverkehrsamt) is responsible (Luitpoldstraße 51, 96052 Bamberg). It decides on parking exemption permits and on closing off parking spaces, for example for a move. According to the city, whether a permit is granted depends on the individual case. Two forms are available on the city's website: the application for a parking exemption permit and the application for setting up a temporary no-parking zone.
Important for your planning: according to the city, traffic signs may not be put up without a prior traffic order. You must obtain the no-parking signs yourself, put them up and remove them again immediately after the date. The page does not state deadlines or fees; they are given in the form or must be requested from the authority. According to the city, the traffic authority can be reached on 0951 87-2215 (general number 0951 87-2210); office hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 12:00 and by appointment.
- Determine the length of the area and the period in advance
- Organise the signs in good time before the date
- Plan the loading and unloading addresses separately
How to apply for a no-parking zone in general is explained in our guide to the parking restriction zone. Our offer for the city can be found under Bamberg removal company.
Bamberg: old town, Domberg and Gärtnerstadt as a challenge for the removal van
Bamberg combines several urban areas with very different buildings. In older houses, such as those in the old town and around the Domberg, stairwells and doors are often narrow, so large furniture does not simply fit through. In the Gärtnerstadt and in newer residential areas, access and the routes to the house are often different. That is why we look at each address individually during the survey and plan staff, vehicle and time window accordingly. That way we avoid surprises on moving day.
These points determine the effort and the fixed price:
- Width of stairs, hallways and doors
- Floor and lift or external furniture lift
- Distance between the front door and the no-parking zone
- bulky furniture that has to be dismantled or moved through a window
If furniture does not fit into the stairwell, we take care of dismantling and reassembly where needed. Our offer for this can be found under move with assembly. On request we pack fragile items with our packing service.
After moving in, the nationwide registration requirement applies: under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG) you register with the registration authority within two weeks. What everyday life in the city looks like is described in the guide for newcomers to Bamberg.
