What we clarify before moving day in Würzburg

Pedestrian zone, parking restriction, date

In Würzburg’s old town the lanes are narrow, parts of it are a pedestrian zone, and around the Marienberg Fortress the streets climb steeply. Driving in requires an exemption permit, and parking spaces in front of the building require a parking restriction – we clarify both with you before moving day. Planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source, and after the survey the price is set as a fixed price. Your belongings are covered with liability under the HGB (€620 per m³). For longer routes see long-distance moves.

Packing service

We pack your household goods and label every box by room – in Würzburg everything then goes straight into the right room.

Student moves

For a room near the university or the THWS, a small van or a part load is often enough – with a student move you only pay for what you take.

Stairs in older buildings

Many houses in the Altstadt and Sanderau have narrow stairwells; we dismantle wardrobes, pad them and carry them safely – with furniture transport.

Senior moves

When moving to a smaller flat, for example in Heidingsfeld or Lengfeld, we plan calmly and reassemble furniture – with a senior move.
WÜRZBURG CHECKLIST

Six steps for a fresh start in Würzburg

From the tenancy agreement to registration: these points belong on the list for a move to Würzburg. We calculate the transport after the survey with a fixed price.

01

Search early

At the start of the semester the market is in particularly high demand; start your search early and have your documents ready for the tenancy agreement.
02

Sort out access

For the pedestrian zone the removal van needs an exemption permit from the civil engineering and traffic department – apply in good time.
03

Registration at the citizens’ office

Register within two weeks of moving in; this is not possible before you move in – with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
04

Order bulky-waste collection

The Stadtreiniger (municipal cleaning service) collect old furniture once booked; we clear larger quantities with a house clearance.
05

Getting around without a car

Trams and buses connect the city districts, and the main station is an ICE stop – handy for commuters.
06

Arriving in Würzburg

A stroll across the Alte Mainbrücke or through the Residenz court garden – this is how you get to know your new neighbourhood.
SMALL MOVES

Part load to Würzburg

A few items, a shared trip
For smaller moves to Würzburg we offer a low-cost part load, in which your household goods are combined with other transports on the same route. We agree the delivery day with you in advance; your belongings are covered with liability under the HGB here too.

GUIDE

Würzburg
for newcomers

Boroughs, offices, daily life

When moving to Würzburg, besides flat hunting you should think about registering at the citizens’ office (Bürgerbüro), enrolling at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität or the THWS, and re-registering your vehicle. Many newcomers underestimate the parking situation in the old town – early planning with a residents’ parking permit pays off here. Narrow stairwells in historic older buildings also need planning. We take care of organising the transport so that you can concentrate on your fresh start.

Choosing a city district

Altstadt, Frauenland or Heuchelhof: the choice determines access, floors and parking restrictions. We then plan the vehicle and team for a private move, senior move or student move.

Organising moving day

With a packing service, furniture transport and a suitable small-load transport, the day stays manageable – even in the steep lanes below the fortress.

Businesses and special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public-authority move, part load or furniture taxi, we agree time slots and permits with you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about living in Würzburg

City districts, flat hunting, registration and the pedestrian zone in Würzburg.
The cost depends on the size of the flat, distance, floor and accessibility; the per-kilometre rate starts at €4.20/km. After the survey you receive a binding fixed price that already includes the parking restriction and carrying distances.

13 city districts between the Zellerau and Rottenbauer

Würzburg is divided into 13 city districts: Altstadt, Zellerau, Dürrbachtal, Grombühl, Lindleinsmühle, Frauenland, Sanderau, Heidingsfeld, Heuchelhof, Steinbachtal, Versbach, Lengfeld and Rottenbauer. The Altstadt with the Residenz and cathedral is densely built up, and parts of it are a pedestrian zone; the Zellerau and the Marienberg Fortress lie on the left bank of the Main.

Popular with students are central districts such as the Sanderau and Frauenland, while Grombühl lies close to the university hospital. Further out, Versbach, Lengfeld or Rottenbauer offer more detached houses, and the Heuchelhof in the south lies close to the motorway. During the survey we clarify access and the loading route.

Universities, hospital and daily life in Würzburg

Würzburg is a centre for science and healthcare: the Julius-Maximilians-Universität, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) and the University of Music together have more than 35,000 students, plus the university hospital. Industrial companies such as the printing-press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer are also based here. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures; at the start of the semester the market is particularly tight.

The city has had an electric tram since 1900, the main station is an ICE stop, and by car the A3 and A7 are close by. The Main, vineyards and festivals such as the Mozartfest shape the quality of life. Our team sets your moving date to suit the handover of your new flat. You will find further destination cities in the locations overview.

What the price in Würzburg depends on

Important factors are the volume of your furniture, the distance (from €4.20/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. A parking restriction zone also counts. Additional services such as a part load can reduce the price.

Würzburg: pedestrian zone, exemption permit and the civil engineering and traffic department

If you need to drive the removal van into the pedestrian zone in Würzburg, you need an exemption permit. According to its list of services, the city issues it “for a fee”; it does not state an amount or processing time there. The responsible office is the civil engineering and traffic department (Fachbereich Tiefbau und Verkehrswesen, Veitshöchheimer Straße 1, 97080 Würzburg, phone 0931 37 22 98). It can be reached on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30 am to 12.00 noon and 2.00 to 4.00 pm, and on Fridays from 8.30 am to 12.00 noon.

The same office also handles applications for permission to close the carriageway, likewise for a fee. A parking restriction for moves is not listed separately on these pages. So clarify by phone which application applies to your street and how much lead time is needed. Allow several weeks for this, as the city does not state any deadlines.

Parking in the city: for parking spaces the city refers to the SVG, which provides a large number of parking spaces in Würzburg. For helpers with private cars, multi-storey car parks are usually easier than spaces in the old town. If you would rather not deal with the authority yourself, you will find our parking restriction zone service here. You can read general information about the city and its districts on Moving in Würzburg.

Würzburg: registering at the citizens’ office and bulky-waste collection by the Stadtreiniger

According to the city, after moving in you register in Würzburg within two weeks. Registration before moving in is not possible. The citizens’ office (Bürgerbüro, Rückermainstraße 2, 97070 Würzburg, residents’ registration phone 0931 37 24 07) recommends registering in person by appointment. It is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.20 am to 1.00 pm, on Tuesdays from 7.20 am to 12.00 noon and 1.30 to 4.00 pm, on Thursdays from 7.30 am to 12.00 noon and 1.30 to 6.00 pm, and on Fridays from 7.20 am to 12.00 noon. According to the city, since 21.09.2026 registration has also been possible online via the nationwide platform, but only for main or sole residences; you then receive the address sticker for your ID documents by post. The city provides the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) as a fillable form.

For household items you are not taking with you, the Stadtreiniger collect bulky waste, electrical appliances and bulky garden waste for a fee. You arrange the appointment at the Stadtreiniger customer office (Äußere Aumühlstraße 5, 97076 Würzburg, phone 09 31 / 37 44 44; Monday to Thursday 8 am to 12 noon and 1 to 4 pm, Friday 8 am to 12 noon). The city does not state the quantity or fee on this page, so ask beforehand. For large quantities we plan a house clearance.

Always one step ahead.
