Nuremberg guide
Nuremberg: Imperial Castle, universities and many neighbourhoods
Neighbourhoods, work, everyday life
With around 530,000 inhabitants, Nuremberg is the second-largest city in Bavaria and the largest in Franconia. Anyone planning a move to Nuremberg will find a medieval old town with the Imperial Castle (Kaiserburg), a long-distance rail hub at the main station and Nuremberg Airport. Before moving day, we clarify access and the no-parking zone, for example in the old town or in residential areas such as Gostenhof and St. Johannis. We are based in Berlin, which is around 436 km away. We plan your private move from the first box to the last lamp.
Whether you are moving here for a job at DATEV or Siemens, to study at the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg or FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, or are looking for employers such as adidas and Schaeffler in nearby Herzogenaurach – we take care of the transport. We quote the fixed price after the survey, whether you are coming from the region or by long-distance move. Your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB, and additional insurance is possible. The route from Berlin is described on our page Long-distance move Berlin – Nuremberg.

What we clarify before moving day in Nuremberg
No-parking zone, access, date
In Nuremberg, the Servicebetrieb Öffentlicher Raum (SÖR, public space service) issues mobile no-parking zones for moves; this is particularly important in the old town with its one-way streets and few short-stay parking spaces. We plan this application with you, as well as lift reservations in large residential complexes such as in Langwasser. With a dedicated contact person and a fixed price after a survey, you know in advance what the move will cost. We are based in Berlin and operate nationwide.

Nuremberg
for newcomers
A move to Nuremberg raises many questions: which neighbourhood suits your everyday life, which official errands are due, how does parking work? We cover registration, the no-parking zone via SÖR, residents' parking and the transport links by underground, tram and bus run by the VAG. Nursery and school places also play a role in planning. Frequently asked questions about living in Nuremberg
Nuremberg's neighbourhoods at a glance
Statistically, Nuremberg is divided into ten districts and 87 sub-districts, but in everyday life people tend to speak of neighbourhoods. The old town within the city walls, with the Imperial Castle and short distances, is better suited to singles and couples without much furniture. St. Johannis north-west of the old town and Erlenstegen in the east are considered quiet, green residential areas. Langwasser in the south-east is a large housing estate with its own underground connection.
Gostenhof, west of the old town, is a young, mixed neighbourhood with lots of cafés. Mögeldorf and Zerzabelshof lie in the east near the Volkspark Dutzendteich. For students, Wöhrd near the main campus of the Technische Hochschule is convenient. Whichever neighbourhood you choose – our private move service gets you safely to your new home.
Work, universities and leisure in Nuremberg
Nuremberg is home to companies such as DATEV, NORMA and Nürnberger Versicherung; Siemens has large sites here. Nearby Herzogenaurach is home to adidas, Puma and Schaeffler. Universities in the city are the Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm, the University of Technology Nuremberg (Technische Universität Nürnberg), the Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Music; the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg has sites in both cities.
The Christkindlesmarkt, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum and parks such as the Wöhrder Wiese shape leisure time. Underground, tram and bus run by the VAG connect the neighbourhoods. We do not give specific rents, as we have no reliable current source. If you are moving beyond the city boundary, you will find more under Long-distance moves.

No-parking zone for your move in Nuremberg: application, deadlines and costs
According to the city, for a move in Nuremberg you can apply to the Servicebetrieb Öffentlicher Raum (SÖR) for mobile no-parking zones and an exemption permit for loading and unloading. The responsible office is SÖR Straßen- und Verkehrsrecht (road and traffic law), Sulzbacher Straße 2-6, phone 09 11 / 231-7637. You apply online or using the PDF form; you can submit the number plate later.
Important for planning:
- Lead time: according to SÖR, the application must be made at least four weeks in advance.
- No-parking zone: for up to 20 m, SÖR states 35 euros for one day to 50 euros for four days; longer stretches cost surcharges.
- Exemption permit: 27 euros for one vehicle on one day outside the pedestrian zone, 32 euros inside; each additional day costs 5 euros, each additional vehicle 20 euros.
- Signs: the no-parking signs are put up by a competent person, not by SÖR. They are put up four days before the move; the costs for this are added.
According to SÖR, vehicles parked without authorisation can be towed away, so putting the signs up in good time pays off. How we support you with this can be found under Parking restriction zone. The amounts are taken from the SÖR page (as of October 2026) and may change; check them before applying. More about moves to the city: Moves to Nuremberg.
Moving to Nuremberg: old town, residents' parking permit and registration
According to the city of Nuremberg, there are around 800 paid short-stay parking spaces in the old town, and charges there and in the immediate surroundings are mostly 2.50 euros per hour. If you are moving in here, you should coordinate loading and unloading with SÖR, especially if the street is in the pedestrian zone: for this, SÖR states the higher fee for the exemption permit.
After moving in, the residents' parking permit is worthwhile. The responsible office is the Bürgeramt Mitte (Äußere Laufer Gasse 25). According to the city, an initial or renewal application costs 30.70 euros for one year and 61.40 euros for two years; the same fees apply when moving. Requirements include being registered in a street in the residents' parking area, not having a garage or parking space in the area, and a vehicle registered to you or in your permanent use.
For registration, the city names two ways: if you are moving to Nuremberg, you can register your main residence online (ID card with activated online function and the AusweisApp required). Alternatively, you book an appointment at the Bürgeramt (citizens' office) at terminvereinbarung.nuernberg.de; the city generally recommends an appointment. Under § 17 (1) BMG, the two-week deadline applies from moving in.
We accompany your private move from planning to the last box.
