Living on the Danube
Regensburg is the capital of the Upper Palatinate and attracts many new residents – with its Old Town and Stadtamhof, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006, and a strong industrial base. Anyone planning a move to Regensburg will find large employers such as BMW, Continental and Infineon, as well as the university and the OTH. The city on the Danube combines history with short distances, and many newcomers come from Munich or Nuremberg. On moving day, what matters most is access in the Old Town and a parking restriction, which the city must order at least two weeks beforehand.
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and organise your private move to Regensburg from the survey to the last box – including the parking restriction and the parking exemption permit. We also handle long-distance moves from other federal states. We quote the price as a fixed price after the survey. You can find destinations with their own page on our locations page.

What matters in Regensburg
Narrow lanes, clear planning
A move in Regensburg has its own hurdles: narrow lanes in the Old Town, camera-controlled access points with bollards and historic buildings without a lift. We are based in Berlin, drive the 495 km via the A9, A72 and A93 and clarify beforehand with the road traffic department where the removal van may stop and whether a loading zone is enough. We are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB) – whether a student flat in the Old Town or a detached house in Königswiesen. We quote the price as a fixed price after the survey, and we apply to the city for the parking restriction with a site plan and traffic sign plan. The parking exemption permit for the van in the restricted area is included too.

New
in Regensburg
On a move to Regensburg, think early about registering at one of the three citizens' offices, your electricity supplier and a residents' parking permit – parking space is scarce, especially in the Old Town and the Ostenviertel. Flat hunting also needs time, because the Regensburg housing market is in demand. For families it is worth looking at nursery and school places, for example in Burgweinting or the Konradsiedlung. Our private move service helps to coordinate these steps with moving day.

Frequently asked questions about living in Regensburg
Regensburg's districts at a glance
Regensburg is divided into varied districts with very different characters. The Old Town delights with its medieval flair, narrow lanes and the famous Stone Bridge – ideal for anyone who loves urban life and short distances, though at higher rents. The Ostenviertel east of the Old Town is considered a young district with many cafés. Families, on the other hand, appreciate quieter districts such as Burgweinting, Königswiesen or Konradsiedlung, which impress with new housing developments, green spaces and good school infrastructure.
If you like things a little quieter but still close to the city, you will find attractive residential areas in Kumpfmühl, Reinhausen or Stadtamhof on the other side of the Danube. Stadtamhof charms with its village feel directly opposite the Old Town, while Reinhausen is regarded as an up-and-coming residential district with good transport links. Prüfening and the Westenviertel offer a mix of industry, commerce and affordable housing – particularly interesting for commuters to the large employers.
Housing market, employers & quality of life
The Regensburg housing market is tight, especially in the Old Town and popular districts such as the Ostenviertel; the city publishes the current rent index. If you are looking for a suitable flat, you should start searching early and stay flexible about districts. As an economically strong city, Regensburg offers numerous attractive employers, above all the BMW Regensburg plant, as well as companies such as Continental, Infineon, Schaeffler (formerly Vitesco Technologies) and Krones AG in neighbouring Neutraubling. This strong industrial and technology base ensures a stable supply of jobs and attracts skilled workers from all over Germany.
Regensburg also scores as a university city: the University of Regensburg and the OTH Regensburg give it a young, international flair and a lively student culture. Quality of life in Regensburg is considered excellent – the combination of a historic cityscape, the Danube as a recreational area, short distances and good medical care at the university hospital makes the city a sought-after place to live. These factors explain why more and more people are planning a move to Regensburg.

Parking restriction for your move in Regensburg: application, deadline and fees
For the removal van in Regensburg you need a parking restriction to be ordered. According to the City of Regensburg's service page, this is also required for a home or business move in order to keep the space clear. The responsible office is the Office for Public Order and Road Traffic, road traffic department (Johann-Hösl-Straße 11). In addition, a parking exemption permit is required for the vehicles in the restricted area.
The city lists the following documents:
- site plan or site sketch
- aerial photo with the affected public traffic area marked
- traffic sign plan
The application must be submitted at least two weeks before the intended start of the parking restriction; the validity period depends on the occasion. The city lists the following fees:
- €20 for 1 to 3 days
- €30 from 1 week
- €60 from 1 month
- €25 per move
Measure in advance how many metres of kerbside your vehicle needs and mark this area on the site plan. The legal basis is § 45 (3) of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO). The city also offers the application as an online service. Which fee applies to your moving day follows from the fee list and the duration; if in doubt, ask the road traffic department.
How we plan the move in Regensburg is explained on our parking restriction zone page. If you are coming from Berlin, you will find advice on long-distance moves.
Regensburg's Old Town, registration and citizens' offices after the move
Anyone moving into the Old Town should know the traffic rules. According to the City of Regensburg on traffic calming in the Old Town, the Old Town will not become car-free but will be opened up in a differentiated way: access remains possible, but targeted and regulated. Digitally controlled exemptions apply to many types of traffic. The short-term measures include camera-based access controls with bollard systems and 48 new loading zones, among others in Weiße-Lilien-Straße, Thundorferstraße and on St.-Kassians-Platz. So clarify access for moving day with the road traffic department in good time.
For registering your flat, the city gives a deadline of two weeks after moving in. It is free of charge. There are three ways:
- in person at a citizens' office or at the vehicle registration office
- online via electronic registration of residence with a BundID account, an identity card with the online ID function and the AusweisApp
- in writing by post with an original signature
You must bring an official photo ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). The three citizens' offices are in Stadtmitte (D.-Martin-Luther-Straße 3), Nord (Im Gewerbepark C34) and Burgweinting (Friedrich-Viehbacher-Allee 3). According to the city, customers from all districts can use any of the offices, and many frequently requested services can be handled there in one place. Before your visit it is worth checking the current opening hours, which the city publishes separately.
