Key answers for your move in Munich
According to the city, the Mobilitätsreferat processes the application in ten working days, and the signs must be in place no later than the fourth day before the valid-from date. So allow at least three weeks' lead time.
Moving in Munich: the process in Germany's most densely populated city
A move in Munich presents removal companies with particular challenges: with 4,844 inhabitants per square kilometre, the Bavarian state capital has the highest population density of any German municipality, many older buildings in the Isarvorstadt or Schwabing have narrow stairwells without a lift, and the city centre around Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche is heavily shaped by pedestrian zones and one-way streets. Praktik Transport und Umzüge comes from Berlin-Moabit, takes these particularities into account when planning and plans every move individually – from the first survey through packing to transport.
The typical process of a private move in Munich is divided into several steps:
- Free survey or advice by phone/video
- Individual quote with a fixed price
- Application for a parking restriction zone if needed
- Packing and dismantling the furniture
- Travel from Berlin and transport
- Assembly and setting up in the new flat
Narrow streets and heavy traffic are the norm, especially in districts such as the Maxvorstadt, Lehel or Haidhausen. We check access routes, loading zones and residents' parking areas for every address in advance; a temporary parking restriction is ordered by the Mobilitätsreferat. The proximity to the Isar with its bridges and the busy Landshuter Allee also call for forward-looking route planning, so that the removal van arrives at its destination on time and without waiting. For a senior move in Munich, we also offer a particularly considerate service with a senior-move concept designed for accessibility and calm. Whether you are moving within Munich, from Solln to Trudering or from the surrounding area, we make sure everything runs smoothly.
Residential areas in 25 city districts: moving within Munich
Munich is divided into 25 city districts with very different characters, which plays an important role in planning a move. Anyone moving to the sought-after Maxvorstadt or to Schwabing will usually find older buildings with high ceilings but narrow stairwells – a furniture lift is often needed here. Bogenhausen is characterised by town villas and generous floor plans, while Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, close to Nymphenburg Palace, offers quiet residential streets and plenty of greenery.
- Sendling and Giesing: mixed residential areas with good access to the Isar
- Haidhausen: old-building quarter east of the Isar
- Pasing-Obermenzing: lots of green space, quiet suburbs in the west of Munich
- Trudering-Riem: new-build areas around Messe München
- Milbertshofen-Am Hart: district in the north around the BMW main plant
Connections to the surrounding region also play a role: if you are moving from Munich into the surrounding area, for example to Ingolstadt, you benefit from the good motorway link via the A9. For moves towards Augsburg we use the A8, to Regensburg the A9 and A93, towards Deggendorf and Passau the A92 and A3. We set the route in advance so that travel time and costs are included in the quote.
Because residential areas in Munich have very different access conditions – from narrow lanes in the Glockenbachviertel to wide streets in Riem – we check the conditions at both addresses before every job, so that we can realistically plan parking restriction zones, parking spaces and lift sizes. This way we avoid delays on moving day and ensure smooth transport, whichever Munich district you are in.
Moving costs in Munich: transparent prices
The moving costs in Munich depend on several factors: flat size, floor, distance, access and any additional services required, such as a packing service or furniture assembly. Because space in the city centre is often tight, we calculate every move individually – transparently and without hidden costs.
| Service | Price from |
|---|---|
| Moving a 1-room flat | €344 |
| Moving a 2-room flat | €609 |
| Moving a 3-room flat | €889 |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €4.20 |
| Parking restriction zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These prices are guide values and may vary depending on the floor, lift situation and additional services such as a part load or house clearance. Especially in Munich, with its many older flats on the third or fourth floor without a lift – for example in the Isarvorstadt or parts of Sendling – a surcharge for the furniture lift may apply. The parking situation in districts such as the Glockenbachviertel or around Gärtnerplatz also affects the calculation, as a parking restriction zone is often needed there.
We recommend getting a free quote early, especially for moves at the end of the month, when many tenancies change. After a short survey – by video if you prefer – our team draws up a fixed price that covers all agreed services. This way you keep track of your moving costs from the start and avoid nasty surprises on moving day.
Parking restriction via the Mobilitätsreferat: parking on moving day
Anyone moving in Munich knows the problem: parking spaces are rare, especially in densely built-up districts such as the Maxvorstadt, Lehel or Schwabing. So that the removal van can stop right outside the front door, we organise a parking restriction zone for our customers, which is applied for with the Mobilitätsreferat. According to our price list, a parking restriction zone costs €30 to €100 per day; the city's fee depends on the area.
The following points are important when applying:
- According to the city, processing takes ten working days, so allow around three weeks' lead time
- Put up the signs no later than the fourth day before the valid-from date
- Plan the length of the zone according to the vehicle; in the Altstadtring, the fee differs for up to 20 m and above
- Note the registration numbers of parked vehicles when putting up the signs (pre-registration list)
- Clarify the pedestrian zones of the Altstadt separately
In districts with particularly high parking pressure, such as the Glockenbachviertel, Haidhausen or around Gärtnerplatz, early planning is crucial. In new-build areas such as Riem or Freiham, building sites can also restrict access, which we check in advance. For the parking restriction zone, we help you with the street, length and date for the application and check on moving day whether the space is clear.
Without a properly set-up parking restriction zone, you face longer carrying distances, extra time and, in the worst case, fines for wrongly parked vehicles. We make sure your moving day in Munich runs smoothly – with no searching for parking and no stress with neighbours or transport operators.
Between Munich, Berlin and other cities in Bavaria
Munich is conveniently located in the south of Bavaria and has excellent links to the rest of Germany via several motorways. For a long-distance move from Munich, depending on the destination, we use the A9 towards Nuremberg and on to Berlin (around 585 road kilometres to Berlin-Moabit), the A8 towards Augsburg and Stuttgart, the A92 towards Deggendorf and Passau, the A95 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the A96 towards Lindau/Lake Constance.
We also carry out moves to other Bavarian cities, for example:
- Augsburg – via the A8
- Ingolstadt – via the A9
- Regensburg – via the A9 and A93
- Nuremberg – via the A9
- Erlangen and Fürth – in the greater Nuremberg area
- Würzburg – via the A9 and A3
- Bamberg – via the A9 and A73
- Passau – via the A92 and A3
For smaller quantities or individual pieces of furniture, we also offer an affordable part load, where your belongings are carried together with other transports. We calculate long-distance moves from €4.20 per kilometre, with factors such as load volume, floor and additional services affecting the final price. We clarify moves to Austria or Switzerland individually on request, including the customs and toll rules that apply there.
Services for moves in Munich
As a removal company from Berlin, we offer a comprehensive package of services in Munich that goes far beyond classic furniture transport. Our aim is to make every move – private or commercial – as efficient and stress-free as possible.
- Private move – from a studio flat to a villa in Bogenhausen
- Company move – for offices, practices and commercial premises
- Part load – affordable transport for smaller quantities
- House clearance – for cellars, lofts or complete flat clearances
- Parking restriction zone – organisation and application throughout Munich
- Piano transport – transport with dedicated securing
- Senior move – sensitive and low-barrier
- Student move – affordable and flexible for students
Especially in Munich, with its mix of Gründerzeit period buildings in Schwabing, modern new builds in Riem and historic villas in Bogenhausen, every building needs its own plan. To move a grand piano or upright piano out of a third-floor flat in an older building without a lift, we plan the securing, carrying straps and enough crew. For house clearances, for example after a death or before selling a property, we take care of proper disposal and hand the property over swept clean.
Packing material and an inventory list are included on request, so that you keep track of your belongings. Whether furniture assembly, kitchen assembly or storage, we offer all services from a single source, tailored to the particular demands of the Munich housing market.
Office and company moves in Munich
Munich is one of Germany's most important business locations, with numerous company headquarters in the Werksviertel, in Bogenhausen, in Parkstadt Schwabing and around Messe München in Riem. A company move in Munich requires precise planning so that business operations are interrupted as little as possible.
Our approach to office moves includes:
- Initial walk-through and a detailed move plan
- Dismantling and assembly of office furniture, server cabinets and partition walls
- Safe packing of IT equipment and sensitive documents
- Labelling and inventory for smooth reassembly
- Moves at weekends or in the evening possible
- Organisation of the necessary parking restriction zone in front of the office building
Whether a start-up in the Werksviertel, a medium-sized company in Milbertshofen near the BMW plant or a law firm in the Maxvorstadt, we clarify the logistical questions of each location in advance. Narrow access roads in the city centre, goods lifts in office towers at Arnulfpark or delivery times in pedestrian zones are agreed with the building management beforehand.
For companies with several locations in Bavaria, we also offer coordinated moves, for example between Munich and Augsburg, Ingolstadt or Regensburg, where team size and schedule are set in advance to keep downtime low. The transport of special items such as servers, laboratory equipment or high-quality furniture is also part of our portfolio. With a fixed schedule for your company move, we make sure your business is up and running again as quickly as possible at its new location in Munich – including rebuilding the IT infrastructure and furnishing to your specifications.
Student moves in Munich: process and booking
With Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, the Technical University of Munich and numerous other higher education institutions, Munich is one of Germany's largest student cities. Every semester, thousands of students move into districts such as Schwabing, the Maxvorstadt, Sendling or student-oriented Giesing. For this group we offer a special student move on fair terms.
Typical features of a student move in Munich:
- Mostly smaller flats or rooms in shared flats
- Tight time windows around the start of semester
- Often several floors without a lift in older buildings
- Can be combined with a part load to save costs
- Flexible dates, also bookable at short notice
Booking with Praktik Transport und Umzüge is deliberately kept simple: first you receive a non-binding quote via our contact form or by phone, based on flat size, floor and distance. We then confirm the date and clarify any open questions about the parking restriction zone or packing material. On moving day, our team handles the assembly and dismantling of furniture, transport of the boxes and, on request, the final cleaning of the old flat.
Especially for students moving to Munich from other Bavarian cities such as Erlangen, Fürth, Nuremberg or Würzburg, we offer affordable combined solutions with a part load, as the route can often be bundled with other jobs. This keeps the move affordable even on a limited student budget. It is best to book your student move in Munich early, as demand for moving dates is particularly high around the start of semester in October and April.
Applying for a parking restriction in Munich: Mobilitätsreferat, fees and deadlines
In Munich, the Mobility Department (Mobilitätsreferat), Temporary Orders section (Implerstraße 9, 81371 Munich), is responsible for temporary parking restrictions for moves. You can apply online via the city's form; a parking restriction for a move of more than three calendar days, however, must be applied for by post, fax or email.
According to the city, the following rules apply:
- Processing takes ten working days; the permit cannot be collected immediately.
- The signs must be in place no later than the fourth day before the valid-from date; without written approval they are invalid.
- When putting up the signs, the registration numbers and features of the vehicles parked there must be noted (pre-registration list).
The fees depend on the area. According to the Mobilitätsreferat's fee list (as of September 2026), an access zone for moves of up to one day costs: Altstadtring and inside it, up to 20 m in length, 49 euros, above that 69 euros; Mittlerer Ring, inside the Mittlerer Ring and residents' parking areas, 32 euros; outside the Mittlerer Ring, 26 euros.
During the survey we record the street, length and date and keep an eye on the deadlines: allow ten working days for processing plus four days for putting up the signs, so that the date is secure. More on this under parking restriction zone. Further information in our guide Moving to Munich.
Low-emission zone, residents' parking area and access zones: planning access in Munich
Munich's rules follow a ring structure that also determines the parking restriction fees: the Altstadtring, the Mittlerer Ring and residents' parking areas, and the area outside the Mittlerer Ring. If you move within these rings, you usually have narrower access, higher fees and stricter parking rules than in the outer districts.
The low-emission zone also follows the Mittlerer Ring: according to the city, the Mittlerer Ring and everything inside it is part of the low-emission zone. A driving ban applies there until further notice for diesel vehicles with Euro 4 or worse; according to the city, delivery traffic and residents are exempted by signage. The emission standard of your vehicle is shown under item 14 in the vehicle registration certificate. Violations of the diesel driving ban cost 100 euros; with fees and expenses, 128.50 euros.
After moving in, you should also check which residents' parking area your new address is in. The city offers a street search and a geoportal for this; residents can get the residents' parking permit.
If your vehicle is moving to Munich from another city, the city has its own service pages for re-registering a vehicle from outside and within Munich.
For moves in the surrounding area, see our pages on Ingolstadt and Augsburg, and an overview under Bavaria. We travel from our premises in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21).
