The town centre lies on the Saar and offers short distances to shops, doctors and the railway station; the Old Town Hall and the Völklingen Ironworks are also here. Wehrden and Fenne lie directly on the Saar, along with Luisenthal towards Saarbrücken as well as Röchlinghöhe and Heidstock.
Then there are Fürstenhausen and Geislautern, and in the far west in the Warndt forest Ludweiler – the largest district – and Lauterbach on the French border. Work, commuting and leisure in Völklingen
A major local employer is Saarstahl AG, headquartered in Völklingen; in addition there are suppliers, retail and services. Many residents commute to Saarbrücken, around 10 km to the east, via the A620 or by train on the Saar line. Saarland University is in Saarbrücken; if you study there, check the route by train and bus in advance.
For leisure, there is the World Heritage Völklingen Ironworks with its exhibitions, the Saar with its cycle paths and the Warndt forest around Ludweiler. We do not quote specific rents; compare current listings before you decide on a district.

What determines the price to Saarland
Basically, the price depends on the volume of your goods and the distance between your old and new address (from €4.10/km). Völklingen: parking restriction zones and citizens' office appointments at a glance
The town of Völklingen divides responsibility for parking restriction zones by district. According to the town hall A–Z: room 0.10 is responsible for the town centre, Fenne, Röchlinghöhe, Luisenthal, Heidstock and Fürstenhausen (tel. 13-2321), and room 0.13 for Wehrden, Geislautern, Ludweiler and Lauterbach (tel. 13-2320). The dialling code is 06898. For exemptions from existing stopping and parking bans the town also gives 13-2321. The page does not state the lead time or fee, so ask early – ideally when planning the date, not just shortly before the move. More about our service: Parking restriction zone.
Registering your new address: the citizens' office in the New Town Hall (Rathausplatz) can only be visited with a prior appointment. You book appointments in the town's online appointment portal; short-notice appointments are offered daily from 7.45 am. When booking, you must give the name of the person the appointment is for. The switchboard (06898 / 13-0) can be reached in the mornings Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 12.00 noon, and on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30 pm to 6.00 pm. The town provides the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) as a PDF.
Registration must be completed within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 Federal Registration Act, BMG). Book the appointment before the move so that you do not miss the deadline.
Völklingen: ten districts, Wehrden on the Saar and bulky waste
According to the town, Völklingen consists of ten districts: the town centre plus Fenne, Fürstenhausen, Geislautern, Heidstock, Lauterbach, Ludweiler, Luisenthal, Röchlinghöhe and Wehrden. Settlement of the town centre began directly on the Saar in the area of the "Alter Brühl" and grew up via Kirchgasse to today's town centre. Its landmarks are the Old Town Hall, St Eligius Church, the Church of Reconciliation and the eight-storey administrative centre.
With around 5,000 inhabitants, Wehrden is the second-largest district after Ludweiler and lies on the banks of the Saar; its village centre was upgraded through a funding programme. Ludweiler is therefore the largest district. Wehrden was originally a clustered village and spread out on both sides of Schaffhauser Straße in the 20th century. As described above, responsibility for parking restrictions depends on the district: so first find out which district your new address is in. Check the street width and access there in advance.
Bulky waste: on the town's website you can book bulky waste collection via the citizens' portal. According to the town, waste in Völklingen is collected by the waste management association (EZV), which answers queries on 06898 / 13-2357; you can create an individual collection calendar at ezv-vk.de.
