Living in Homburg (Saar): Districts Rents & University Hospital

Homburg for New Residents
Homburg (Saar): Schlossberg, University Hospital and the Palatinate Forest on the Doorstep
Settling in, not just moving
Homburg is the district town of the Saarpfalz-Kreis and, with a good 43,000 inhabitants, the third-largest town in Saarland. The suffix “(Saar)” is not an official part of the name – the town does not lie on the Saar but on the edge of the Palatinate Forest; 43 per cent of its area is woodland. Its landmarks are the Schlossberg with the ruins of the Hohenburg and the Schlossberg caves, according to Wikipedia Europe's largest red sandstone caves. Homburg is home to the Faculty of Medicine of Saarland University and its university hospital.
For newcomers, the first tasks are registering at the citizens' office, finding a flat in one of the municipal districts and sorting out the commute. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Homburg or Saarland. The route from Berlin – around 695 km, via the A9, A4, A5 and A63 among others – is described on our page Moving Berlin – Homburg. Because of driving-time rules we plan in enough buffer; we also handle the opposite direction, Homburg → Berlin.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Homburg
Route, access, floor
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Homburg business. Over around 695 km we plan the journey with rest breaks for driving-time rules and clarify in advance how the lorry can reach your building – whether in the town centre, in Erbach or in Kirrberg – and whether a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) is needed. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). We give you the price after the survey as a fixed price.

Homburg
for Newcomers
In this guide you can read how Homburg is structured, where to register, which major employers there are and how to get rid of bulky waste and recyclables. We do not quote rents ourselves because we have no reliable source. For commuters, rail and motorway matter: Homburg lies on the A6 and A8 and is connected to the S-Bahn RheinNeckar. On request we take care of the parking restriction zone, furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet free – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Homburg (Saar)
Town Centre and Nine Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Homburg
According to Wikipedia, Homburg consists of the town centre and nine districts: Beeden, Bruchhof-Sanddorf, Einöd, Erbach, Jägersburg, Kirrberg, Reiskirchen, Schwarzenbach and Wörschweiler. Since July 2024 the town itself has listed ten municipal districts with a local council. The basic layout of the old town at the foot of the Schlossberg goes back to the fortress built under Louis XIV.
Beeden, Schwarzenbach, Wörschweiler and Einöd with Ingweiler and Schwarzenacker lie in the Blies valley; Jägersburg includes the Gustavsburg and a recreation area, and Sanddorf has the ruins of Karlsberg Palace. Where you live determines buses, the way to school and the carrying distance on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.
Important when flat-hunting: make sure the listing refers to the district town in Saarland and not Bad Homburg in Hesse – both towns have their own registration authorities.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Homburg
According to Wikipedia, Homburg has around 32,000 jobs subject to social security contributions and ranked 11th nationwide for job density. Major employers are Robert Bosch GmbH with three plants, Saarland University Hospital, Schaeffler (INA), Michelin and the Karlsberg brewery. The Faculty of Medicine of Saarland University is based here; the main campus is in Saarbrücken.
For leisure there is the Schlossberg with its caves and castle ruins, the Roman Museum Schwarzenacker, the Wörschweiler monastery ruins, the town park, the KOI combined pool and the Homburg Bock Beer Festival in November. With the A6 and A8 and rail links to Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern, Homburg is also easy to reach for commuters.

Registering in Homburg (Saar): Citizens' Office in the Town Hall Am Forum
This refers to the district town of Homburg in Saarland, not Bad Homburg in Hesse. The town hall of the district town of Homburg is at Am Forum 5, 66424 Homburg; you can reach the switchboard on 06841/101-0 or at [email protected]. The citizens' advice service can be reached on 06841 101 318 (Monday to Thursday 8.30 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 3.45 pm, Friday 8.30 am to 12 noon). Register with the registration authority of the town in which your flat is located.
Under § 17(1) of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz): anyone who moves into a flat must register within two weeks of moving in. According to the town, the Homburg citizens' office has these opening hours:
- Monday and Tuesday: 7.45 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm
- Wednesday: 7.45 am to 1 pm
- Thursday: 7.45 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 6 pm
- Friday: 7.45 am to 1 pm
The town pages we checked do not state which documents are required or whether an appointment is needed. Ask by phone before your visit. Legally, § 19 of the Federal Registration Act requires the landlord's cooperation: they confirm the move-in with their name and address, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the people required to register.
You can find more about the town and the costs on Moving in Homburg and in the Homburg moving guide.

The page does not give population figures per district.
If you want to get rid of bulky items when moving in, note the rules of the district town of Homburg:
- Bulky waste is collected by appointment only; depending on demand, the waiting time can be 4 to 6 weeks.
- Depending on the size of their residual waste bins, owners have free collections per calendar year, each of up to 4 m³ (up to 240 litres: twice).
- According to the town, paid collections cost 15 euros per 4 m³ or part thereof, up to a maximum of 8 m³.
- Tenants can use the owner's allowance with a signed authorisation.
You can drop items off yourself at the EVS recycling centre in the Am Zunderbaum industrial estate. According to the town, bulky waste there costs 2 euros per cubic metre or part thereof, up to 2 m³ per day. According to the town, the centre accepts old appliances, paper, metals and clothing free of charge. Charges apply to bulky waste, car tyres and mixed building rubble, among other things. Hazardous waste such as paints and solvents is accepted by the Ökomobil once a month, up to 50 kg or 30 litres per visit.
