Saarlouis: city centre Roden, Fraulautern – where to live?

Saarlouis guide
Saarlouis: Vauban's hexagon and seven districts on the Saar
Districts, housing, daily life
Saarlouis was laid out as a fortress town under Louis XIV in 1680, and its hexagonal plan still shapes the city centre today. Around the core lie the districts of Roden, Fraulautern, Lisdorf, Picard and Beaumarais, plus Steinrausch and Neuforweiler. For your home move to Saarlouis this means: in the city centre, parking and access matter; in the districts it is more about the floor and the carrying distance. We quote the fixed price after the survey. All services can be found under Home move.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves to Saarlouis; it is around 741 km from Berlin. Frequently asked questions about living in Saarlouis
The districts of Saarlouis at a glance
The city centre still follows the hexagonal plan of Vauban's fortress. At its heart is the Großer Markt, which serves as a car park and market square; in the north, the old ramparts are used as casemates by restaurants and bars. Around the core, clockwise, lie Roden, Fraulautern, Lisdorf, Picard and Beaumarais; in addition there are Steinrausch, a district in its own right since 1972, and Neuforweiler, incorporated in 1970.
Roden joined the town as early as 1907, Fraulautern, Lisdorf and Picard in 1936. Which location suits you depends on your commute and everyday life. With our home move we plan the move to suit access and the parking situation; in the city centre a little more preparation is needed, for example for the parking position near the Großer Markt. In the districts it is more the floor, stairwell and carrying distance that determine the effort.
Employers, transport links and quality of life in Saarlouis
For a long time the economic focus was the car industry: the Ford plant in the Röderberg industrial estate, with around 5,000 employees, was one of the largest employers in the region; according to Wikipedia, production was due to end in November 2025. Other employers include suppliers in the industrial park, the Ludwig chocolate factory with over 1,000 staff, the Pieper department store and companies in the Lisdorfer Berg industrial estate such as the kitchen manufacturer Nobilia. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here.
Saarlouis is connected to Saarbrücken via the A8 and A620, and the B 405 leads towards Thionville in France. The main station is on the Saarbrücken–Trier line. Vauban Island with its monuments to Marshal Ney and the soldier Lacroix, the old arm of the Saar with the town garden, and the casemates give the town its own character. Via the port of Saarlouis/Dillingen, the town is also connected to the inland waterway network.

Re-registering in Saarlouis: citizens' office on the Großer Markt, deadline and documents
In Saarlouis you register after moving in at the citizens' office (Bürger-Büro) in the town hall, Großer Markt 1, 66740 Saarlouis. The city gives a deadline of two weeks for changes of address, which corresponds to § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz). Registering, deregistering and re-registering are free of charge. According to the city, the citizens' office is the only one in Saarlouis.
You should bring:
- your ID card and the ID documents of the other people moving in with you
- the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, which your landlord completes and signs; you can download the form from the city's website
Town hall opening hours are Mondays and Tuesdays 8 am to 4:30 pm, Wednesdays 8 am to 12:30 pm, Thursdays 8 am to 5 pm and Fridays 8 am to 12 noon. The city also offers online appointment booking; the page does not say whether it is required for registration, so check briefly by phone. If you have questions, write to [email protected] or call 06831/443-222. If you are unable to attend, another person can go for you: you write their name on a sheet of paper, sign it and give them your ID. If you have a car, you can have the address changed at the citizens' office; this costs 11.50 euros, but only for vehicles registered in the district of Saarlouis. For planning your transport, see Home move and Moves in Saarlouis.
Bulky waste and disposal in Saarlouis: appointments, costs and recycling centre
In Saarlouis the city collects bulky waste “only by appointment”. Book by phone via the bulky waste hotline 06831/443-557 (Monday to Friday 9 am to 12 noon), by email to [email protected] or online. Depending on demand, according to the city there can be 4 to 6 weeks between booking and collection, so book early and only put the items out for the agreed date.
The costs at a glance:
- Owners receive a fixed number of free collections of up to 4 m³ each year, depending on their residual waste bins, from 2 for up to 240 litres to 8 for more than 1,920 litres.
- Additional collections cost €15 per 4 m³ or part thereof.
- Delivering it yourself to the EVS recycling centres costs €2 per cubic metre or part thereof, up to a maximum of 2 m³ per day.
Tenants can use the owner's allowance if they enclose a signed authorisation from the owner with the application. Since 1 July 2023, waste wood must be put out separately. Electrical appliances do not count as bulky waste; the EVS recycling centres accept them free of charge, for example at Fasanenallee 52. If you have to empty the entire flat or dissolve a complete household before the handover, our household clearance can help; planning the journey from Berlin is described under Long-distance move.
