Apeldoorn for Newcomers: Gemeente Neighbourhoods, Life by the Veluwe

Guide for newcomers
Apeldoorn: A Fresh Start in the Green City on the Edge of the Veluwe
The first few weeks
For many families and professionals, a move to Apeldoorn means switching to a green city directly east of the Veluwe, the largest continuous forest and nature area in the Netherlands. The municipality has around 169,000 inhabitants (early 2026) and is one of the largest in the country by area; besides the city itself, it includes villages such as Beekbergen, Ugchelen, Loenen and Hoenderloo. We set off from Berlin-Moabit and handle long-distance moves from Germany at a fixed price after a survey. Within the EU your household goods need no customs papers. Read more about long routes on our long-distance moves page.
Every move to Apeldoorn is planned individually, whether you are moving to the villa district of Berg en Bos or to the large residential area of De Maten. On request we take care of packing, transport and assembly; for your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). That leaves time for the first trips to the authorities: an appointment at the town hall on 14 055, BSN, health insurance and Milieupas. Fixed time windows and a personal contact keep your moving date predictable. For private households, our home removal service is the right fit.

Your Move from Berlin to Apeldoorn
Fair, punctual and safe
We set off from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 577 km to Apeldoorn via the A2, the A30 near Bad Bentheim and the Dutch A1, which crosses the A50 near Beekbergen; by lorry that is a good eight hours including a break. According to the municipality, long lorries may only stop in residential areas on working days at certain times – we schedule the date accordingly. We give you the fixed price after a survey; for your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Destinations with their own pages are listed under locations. This makes your move to the province of Gelderland predictable and personally supported.

Apeldoorn
for Newcomers
When moving to Apeldoorn, organisational matters play an important role alongside the transport: registering with the Gemeente Apeldoorn in the Basisregistratie Personen (Personal Records Database), health insurance and redirecting post and contracts. Then there is the waste system with the Milieupas and paid residual waste, which surprises many newcomers at first. Plan your children's school registration in neighbourhoods such as Zuidbroek, Osseveld or De Maten early. We advise on packing materials, furniture dismantling and the right moving date, so that your start in your new neighbourhood goes smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Apeldoorn
Apeldoorn's Neighbourhoods at a Glance
The city of Apeldoorn is divided into eight wijken (districts) with 65 buurten (neighbourhoods). Berg en Bos in the west is a villa district with wide, winding avenues and plenty of woodland; next to it lies the Natuurpark Berg & Bos. North of the centre, old mansions shape the Parkenbuurt. The Binnenstad (city centre) offers shops, cafés and short distances to the station.
Large residential areas were built in the east: Zevenhuizen from 1967, De Maten from 1980 for around 30,000 residents, later Osseveld and the new-build area of Zuidbroek; De Maten and Osseveld have had their own railway stops since 2006. The village-like Ugchelen in the south-west borders directly on the Veluwe. In the city centre, the old Grift stream was brought back to the surface as part of ‘herleef de beek’ – an example of the many streams (sprengen) around Apeldoorn.
Working, Living and Quality of Life in Apeldoorn
Since the 1960s, government services have settled in Apeldoorn – parts of the Belastingdienst tax authority and the Land Registry – along with insurers, clinics and wholesalers. The city is also known for Centraal Beheer, whose office building was designed by Herman Hertzberger. We do not quote specific employer figures without a reliable source. The station is on the Amsterdam–Deventer–Osnabrück–Berlin line; since 2006 the international train to Berlin has stopped here.
The housing market is in demand; we do not quote specific rents or purchase prices, because we have no reliable current source. The Veluwe on the doorstep, the Paleis Het Loo palace, where members of the royal family lived until 1962, and the Apenheul monkey park make Apeldoorn attractive for families and those seeking peace and quiet, with rail links to Amsterdam and Deventer.
Plan costs, move stress-free
So that you can plan your move in a relaxed way, here are the key figures: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €589, 3-room flat from €894, 4-room flat from €1,279. For a house or villa you receive an individual quote; for long-distance moves we charge from €4.25/km. The first step is always a free survey.
Cost factors at a glance
Your moving price depends on the volume, the distance (from €4.25/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. A parking restriction zone can also add costs. If needed, we add furniture assembly or a shared load.

From Berlin to Apeldoorn – and Back
We set off from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive to the Netherlands – to Apeldoorn it is around 577 km, whether for a long-distance move or a small transport. The route is described in the guide to moving to Apeldoorn; more under locations and long-distance moves.
Registering in Apeldoorn: Gemeente, Appointment and Documents
If you move to Apeldoorn and live in the Netherlands for at least four months within a six-month period, you must be entered in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP), according to the Gemeente Apeldoorn. Registration takes place in person at the town hall, within five working days of arrival. You make an appointment by phone on 14 055. A third party cannot register on your behalf; your partner and children must come to the appointment.
You should bring:
- a valid ID or other proof of nationality
- the tenancy or purchase agreement, or a consent statement from the owner together with a copy of their ID
- a birth certificate if you were born abroad
Registration is free of charge. According to the Gemeente, written confirmation follows within two weeks and an overview of your data within four weeks. You receive your citizen service number (BSN) at first registration. Information as of October 2026.
For moves within the Netherlands, the municipality gives a different time window: you can report the move no earlier than four weeks before and no later than five days after it. If you report more than five working days late, your registration date becomes your moving day, and according to the Gemeente you also risk a fine of up to €325.
How a move from Germany works in organisational terms is explained in the guide to the long-distance move to Apeldoorn. You will find more on neighbourhoods and costs in the Apeldoorn guide.
Daily Life in Apeldoorn: Residual Waste, Milieupas and Recycleplein
In daily life, new residents first notice the waste system. According to the Gemeente Apeldoorn, Circulus collects household waste separately, by mini container at the house or by communal container in the neighbourhood. Residual waste is paid per use: an underground container costs €1.50 (large opening) or €0.75 (small opening), and emptying the 140-litre bin costs €7.75. Packaging (PMD), paper and organic waste (GFT) are free.
You take bulky waste to the Recycleplein at Aruba 16 in Apeldoorn or to Talhoutweg 26 in Vaassen. Every household has an address-linked Milieupas. According to the Gemeente, many types of waste are free up to 400 kilograms a year. If you move to Apeldoorn, you can also apply to Circulus for a Verhuispas afval. It lets you drop off a further 400 kilograms of bulky waste free of charge once and is valid for up to twelve months. For this you need the new tenancy or purchase agreement or a BRP extract and a valid ID. You can collect the card at the Recycleplein Aruba 16 before driving onto the scales. The Recyclepleinen accept mattresses free of charge, but they are not collected.
Without a car, you can book a collection with Circulus (phone 0900-9552), or the municipality helps on 14 055 with its recycling service. Collection days are listed on the Circulus website and app. If you are also considering other destinations: how daily life works in Arnhem is covered in the Living in Arnhem guide.
