Frauenfeld: Cantonal Capital on the Murg
– Guide for newcomers
Frauenfeld is the capital of the canton of Thurgau and had around 27,200 inhabitants on 1 January 2026, a good quarter of them with a foreign passport. The traffic-calmed old town with its castle and town hall sits about 15 metres above the station, overlooking the Murg; around forty bridges and footbridges cross the river. The station lies on the SBB line Winterthur–Weinfelden, with direct connections towards Winterthur, Zurich and Bern, to Romanshorn, Konstanz and Wil. By car you reach Frauenfeld via the A7 and the A1. For newcomers one thing matters above all: registration with the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste) has a deadline of 14 days.
Well-known employers in Frauenfeld include SIGG, Sia Abrasives, Baumer and DocMorris; in 2020 the Swiss branch of Wärtsilä moved here from Winterthur, and in 2022 Stadler Rail opened a service site. Add to that the sugar factory in Oberwiesen, a Swiss Post parcel distribution centre and the military training ground on the Allmend. Families will find nine primary schools and, in the Kantonsschule Frauenfeld, the oldest and largest upper secondary school in Thurgau. In summer the Openair Frauenfeld on the Grosse Allmend, held since 1985, draws the crowds. We handle the transport from Germany as a home removal from Berlin.
