Living in Dordrecht: districts rents, registration

First steps
Arriving in Dordrecht: a city on an island
Life where three rivers meet
Dordrecht lies around 20 km south-east of Rotterdam on the island of the same name, surrounded by the Beneden Merwede, Noord, Oude Maas and Dordtsche Kil. The city received its town charter in 1220, making it the oldest city in the former county of Holland; today just under 123,000 people live here. More than a fifth of the municipal area is water, and the De Biesbosch National Park begins to the south and east. If you are moving from Germany, you first have to register with the municipality (gemeente) – this guide sums up what you need for that, how flat hunting via Woonkeus works, which districts there are and how to commute to Rotterdam. You will find the municipality's own information further down, with the date and phone numbers.
We have no branch in the Netherlands; we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). It is around 728 km to Dordrecht via the A2, the Ruhr area and Venlo, about eleven hours by lorry including breaks. There are no customs formalities within the EU; you can take your household goods with you freely. How we plan cross-border moves is explained under International move. Whether it is a canal house in the Binnenstad or a terraced house in Sterrenburg: after a survey or a video call we give you a fixed price, and we are liable for damage under § 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB).

Fixed price for your move to Dordrecht
Survey or video, then a fixed price
For your move to Dordrecht we look at your household goods, floor and access – on site in Berlin or by video call – and then give you a fixed price. A parking space, assembly or storage appear as separate items in the quote. Call us on 01625978461; we set the date so that your tenancy agreement is ready for BRP registration.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Our planning for your move-in
Planned in Berlin, arriving in South Holland
We drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit to Dordrecht and therefore clarify in advance everything that matters on arrival day: narrow streets and quays in the Binnenstad, the often steep stairs of old merchants' houses, the floor and lift in a new build in Stadspolders. Where the removal van is not allowed to stop, we ask the municipality about the rules for an exemption. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of loading space; additional insurance is available. We coordinate the delivery day with the start of your tenancy so that you can register within five days.

How we plan the route to South Holland
The fixed price for your move to Dordrecht is based on volume, floor, carrying distances and the roughly 728 km from Berlin. Border costs such as customs do not apply within the EU. Parking space, furniture lift, assembly and any storage appear as individual items in the quote so that you can compare.

Small moves to Dordrecht
If you are only taking one room or a few pieces of furniture to Dordrecht, you can save with a shared load: your things travel together with other consignments heading for the Netherlands. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day. We clarify on the phone whether it is worthwhile for your volume; customs papers are not needed within the EU.

After
unpacking
If you are staying in Dordrecht for more than four months, you register in the Personal Records Database (BRP, Basisregistratie Personen) within five days of arrival – by appointment only, with everyone attending in person. On first registration you receive your citizen service number (BSN), which employers, health insurers and banks ask for. For social housing you register with Woonkeus Drechtsteden. The sections below set out what the municipality says about this.

Questions about a fresh start in Dordrecht
Binnenstad, Sterrenburg, Dubbeldam – the districts
The municipal area covers the whole of the Island of Dordrecht, with most housing in the north-west. The Binnenstad is the historic centre with the Grote Kerk, old harbour basins and merchants' houses; the inner city and the 19th-century ring are protected as a townscape. The station lies to the south of it. Sterrenburg in the south was largely built in the 1960s and 1970s, and Dubbeldam in the east was a separate municipality until 1970.
Also in the east is Stadspolders, with its own station on the MerwedeLingelijn. Between the centre and De Staart, the new district of Stadswerven is being built on former industrial land. According to the city's mobility plan, Dubbeldam, Sterrenburg and Stadspolders are less densely built and more car-oriented – a point for anyone who wants to live without a car.
Working, commuting and flat hunting
People work in shipyards, timber and metal businesses, the seaport, chemical plants in Staart-Oost and the Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis hospital (Dordwijk). Many commute via the A16, by train or by Waterbus to Rotterdam, around 20 km away. Vocational colleges such as ROC Da Vinci College are in the Leerpark.
Social housing is available via Woonkeus Drechtsteden, private rented flats on portals; we don't quote rents without a reliable source. No tenancy agreement means no BRP registration – and no BSN.
Honest prices for your move
We believe in transparency: 1-room flats from €339, 2-room flats from €594, 3-room flats from €915, 4-room flats from €1,324. If you live in a house or villa, we will draw up an individual quote for you. For long-distance moves: from €4.15/km. Arrange a free survey today.
Price factors of a move at a glance
- Distance between the two homes (from €4.15/km)
- Volume of household goods
- Floor without a lift
- Organising a parking restriction zone
Furniture assembly and a shared load also affect the total price.

From Berlin to South Holland – and back
We plan moves from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit, to Dordrecht as well as back to Germany. How the roughly 728 km work is described in our long-distance moving guide for Dordrecht.
Registering in Dordrecht: BRP registration, appointment and BSN
According to the municipality of Dordrecht, anyone moving there from Germany and staying for more than four months must register in the population register (BRP, Basisregistratie Personen) within five days of arrival. This is only possible at the counter and only by appointment; everyone, including children, must attend in person. When booking, state how many people are registering. The municipality gives out appointments on 14 078, or +31 78 639 89 89 from abroad. The counter was most recently at Spuiboulevard 300, but the municipality has announced that the Stadswinkel is moving, so check the address on dordrecht.nl beforehand.
What you should bring:
- a valid passport or ID card
- proof that you are entitled to live at the new address: a tenancy agreement in your name, proof of ownership or a declaration from the main occupant together with a copy of their ID
- if you were born abroad, the original birth certificate and, where applicable, original marriage or divorce certificates, apostilled or legalised and translated into Dutch, English, French or German
According to the municipality, on first registration you receive your citizen service number (BSN) and the confirmation within four weeks. The municipality does not mention a fee on its page. Plan the handover of the flat so that the tenancy agreement is available in time. How a move to the Netherlands works overall is explained in our guide to moving to Dordrecht.
Flat hunting in Dordrecht: Woonkeus, Binnenstad, Sterrenburg and Dubbeldam
According to the municipality of Dordrecht, for social housing from the housing associations in the Drechtsteden region you register as a home seeker (woningzoekende) with Woonkeus Drechtsteden. After that you can respond to offers daily; registration costs 10 euros per year, and Woonkeus can help by phone on 088 7800 378. The municipality also refers to the housing corporations Rhiant, Tablis Wonen, Trivire, Woonbron and Woonkracht10. You can find private rented flats via portals such as Pararius, Funda or Huurwoningen.nl. In disputes with a landlord, the Huurcommissie (rent tribunal) can help.
Dordrecht is divided into wijken (districts), for each of which the city names a district manager. The Binnenstad is the historic centre. Sterrenburg lies in the south of the city, was largely built in the 1960s and 1970s according to municipal documents, and consists of Sterrenburg 1, 2 and 3. Dubbeldam lies in the east and was a separate municipality until 1 July 1970. The city's Mobiliteitsplan 2040 assigns Dubbeldam, Sterrenburg and Stadspolders to an area with lower density and greater car orientation. That is a point for anyone who wants to live without a car. Which location suits you is best clarified during a viewing. You will find more on the districts in the long-distance moving guide for Dordrecht.
