Delémont Guide
Arriving in Delémont, the Capital of the Canton of Jura
The first few weeks
Delémont (German: Delsberg) is the capital of the canton of Jura and its largest municipality. The town lies on both sides of the Sorne shortly before it flows into the Birs, around 28 km south-west of Basel (as the crow flies), roughly halfway to Biel/Bienne. The official language is French; in 2000, a good 84 per cent of inhabitants gave French as their main language and around 3 per cent German. The Vieille Ville (old town), with the Hôtel de Ville on Place de la Liberté and the Baroque church of Saint-Marcel, shapes the centre. The Jura heights begin all around the town – ideal for hiking and cycling.
Delémont is the regional economic centre for the canton of Jura and the Bernese Jura. Major employers include companies in the machinery and metal industry, the knife and watch sector such as Wenger, electronics, the textile industry and construction, plus the cantonal and district administration, banks, insurers and the regional hospital of the Hôpital du Jura. Since 1909, the Musée Jurassien d'Art et d'Histoire has shown the history of the Jura. If you want to stay flexible for work, you can reach Basel and Biel directly by train. We come from Berlin; the route and customs are described on the page Moving Berlin – Delémont.

Frequently Asked Questions from New Residents in Delémont
Old Town and Station – Where Newcomers Live in Delémont
The Vieille Ville dates back to the medieval town; until after 1800 there were hardly any buildings outside the town walls. After that, the neighbourhood below the old town grew, and with the station (1875) a new focal point emerged south of the centre; industry settled mainly south of the station.
We deliberately do not quote specific rents here. Search via the large portals and with property management companies, have proof of salary and a debt collection register extract ready, and look at access and the staircase before committing.

Registration in Delémont (Delsberg): 14 Days and the Contrôle des Habitants
Delémont, Delsberg in German, is the capital of the canton of Jura. Accordingly, registration is in French: the responsible office is the Contrôle des habitants in the Hôtel de Ville, Place de la Liberté 1, 2800 Delémont (tel. +41 32 421 91 00). According to the town, it is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 12 noon and from 2 to 5 pm, on Thursdays until 6 pm, except on the day before a public holiday. According to the town, you report your arrival within 14 days; the town states the same deadline for arrivals from abroad and from other cantons.
Swiss nationals bring an individual certificate of origin (acte d'origine), the family booklet if there are children, the tenancy agreement, the health insurance card and a copy of their household contents insurance. They receive a certificate of residence. Foreign nationals arriving from abroad present a passport or identity card and an assurance of a residence permit or a return guarantee from the foreigners' service. If you are moving from another canton, first deregister in your old municipality and also bring your residence permit, tenancy agreement, health insurance card and household contents insurance.
You can voluntarily prepare your registration via eUmzug (eumzug.swiss); according to the town, it costs no more than going to the counter. The page does not mention a fee. How a long-distance move to the Jura works is explained in the guide to long-distance moves to Delémont.
Delémont: Station, MOBIJU Buses and Parking in the Vieille Ville
According to the town of Delémont, the SBB station lies south of the centre. From there, trains run hourly to Biel, Porrentruy, Basel, Olten and Delle/Meroux TGV. Town bus line 1 connects the station, Vieille Ville and hospital every 20 minutes. Line 2 is the town's main line and runs every 10 minutes at peak times on weekdays, otherwise every 30 minutes. The PubliCar, an on-demand bus for areas without scheduled services, must be booked (tel. 0800 000 274) and costs a surcharge of CHF 2.00 per person per journey. Passes are available via the Vagabond fare network, which applies to MOBIJU, SBB and CJ.
For parking, the town lists more than 1,900 free spaces, including 1,200 in the white zone and 700 in the blue zone, as well as more than 1,600 paid spaces. For residents of the Vieille Ville there are season permits managed by the police (Place de la Liberté 1, tel. +41 32 421 91 40). The town does not state prices there. Tradespeople pay CHF 10 per day or CHF 40 per week for a parking permit. For moving day, you should clarify access to the old town in advance with the municipality. More on residential areas can be found in the Delémont moving guide.
