Arriving in Verviers: Residence Neighbourhoods and Daily Life in the Vesdre Valley

Verviers has around 56,000 inhabitants and consists of the core town and the villages incorporated in 1977. Hodimont, on the right bank of the Vesdre, was a separate municipality until 1930; textile families lived here in the 18th century, and their buildings recall the era of wool and fashion. Heusy lies on the heights south of the town and, with its many villas, is considered one of the more affluent residential areas of Verviers.

Ensival, Stembert, Lambermont and Petit-Rechain were independent municipalities until 1977 and have their own village centres. Andrimont, on the other hand, does not belong to Verviers: it is part of the neighbouring municipality of Dison, which forms a continuous urban area with Verviers. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and budget; we handle the transport with our home removal service.

The best way to follow the housing market in Verviers is via Belgian property portals and estate agents; the town does not publish reliable average rents, so we do not give a figure here. When searching, bear in mind that Verviers was flooded along the Vesdre in the floods of July 2021 – for flats near the river, ask about their condition after renovation. People work in administration, healthcare and retail, and many commute to Liège or Aachen.

From Verviers-Central station, hourly Intercity trains run towards Brussels and Ostend, and the euregioAIXpress to Aachen Hbf; this puts the University of Liège and RWTH Aachen within reach by rail. The A27 motorway crosses the town towards the Eifel, and the A3 between Aachen and Brussels runs to the north of it. In the surrounding area, the Gileppe dam and the High Fens are inviting for hiking.

If you move to Verviers, you must declare your residence with the municipality. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior (ibz.rrn.fgov.be), the deadline is eight working days from actually moving in. You submit the declaration to the municipality in which you settle. If the whole household moves, only the household's reference person may submit the declaration.

In Verviers, the Service Population at Place du Marché 55 is responsible. According to the town of Verviers, the counter works by appointment only, booked by phone on +32 87 32 52 40 or via the town's online appointment portal. Bring your ID and register everyone moving in at the same time. According to the town, the change of address costs €15.00. Alternatively, you can apply via the E-Guichet (online counter), which is processed once payment has been received.

Then comes the residence check: the town only confirms the change after a police check, in which a neighbourhood officer (inspecteur de quartier) visits the home. You then receive a letter asking you to visit the administration. So plan to be available on the day you move in.

EU citizens staying longer than three months also need a registration certificate (attestation d’enregistrement). Since 1 September 2025 the town has required a complete file for this; if anything is missing, the application is not examined. The town's information pages are in French.

Moving in includes switching your waste collection. For this, the town of Verviers refers to an Intradel form, which is sent to Intradel in Herstal when you change address or when the bin holder (chip bin) changes, by post, fax or email to [email protected]. According to the town, the procedure is free of charge. On bulky waste and recycling centres, the town's environment page only lists keywords; ask the environment department ([email protected]) for locations and opening times.

For parking, the town distinguishes between pay zones and the “blue zone”. Residents can apply for a municipal parking card (carte de riverain); for employees there are season tickets for the blue zone. The municipal council adopted the schedule of charges for 2026 to 2031 on 27 October 2025. For families, the Service de l’Instruction coordinates the municipal schools. According to the town, enrolment for primary school runs from late August to early September, while for nursery school (maternelle) it is possible all year round.
