Living in Verviers: the centre Hodimont and the districts along the Vesdre

Verviers for newcomers
The old wool town: Verviers and its districts
Arriving in eastern Belgium
Verviers lies in the valley of the Vesdre in the province of Liège and was a centre of the wool industry in the 19th century. This history is shown at the Centre Touristique de la Laine et de la Mode (wool and fashion centre) as well as in the mill owners' villas in the higher-lying neighbourhoods. Today the town has around 55,000 inhabitants; besides the centre, the municipality includes the former villages of Ensival, Heusy, Lambermont, Petit-Rechain and Stembert. If you move here, you live close to Eupen, Aachen and the High Fens (Hautes Fagnes).
Eupen, the centre of the German-speaking Community, is around 15 km away, and Aachen about 35 km; Verviers itself is French-speaking. Verviers-Central station lies on the Liège – Aachen line, with trains towards Brussels and Eupen. For your private move to Verviers we take care of packing, transport and assembly – we are based in Berlin. You can read more about long routes under long-distance moves.

What we clarify before you move into Verviers
Hillside, parking zone, dates
Verviers is hilly: many streets in Heusy or Stembert are steep, and in the centre space in front of the building is tight. Before the move to Verviers we therefore check access, floor and stopping place and enquire at the town's parking office. We are based in Berlin and have no office in Belgium; your household goods are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and we give you the price after the survey. Further destinations can be found under locations.

Only one room for Verviers? Part load!
If you are only bringing one room or a few pieces of furniture to Verviers, a part load is often cheaper: your belongings share the load space with other consignments heading to Belgium. In return the delivery day is somewhat more flexible than with a dedicated lorry.

Living,
registering, settling in
This guide describes life after the move: the districts of Verviers, the parking zones in the centre, registration at the Service Étrangers and the disposal of bulky waste. Our long-distance moving guide explains the journey from Berlin, with the route and charges; there are no customs formalities within the EU. More on long routes can be found under long-distance moves; for small quantities we offer a part load.

Questions about living in and moving to Verviers
An overview of the districts of Verviers
The centre, around the Place du Marché with the town hall and the Place Verte, lies in the Vesdre valley; there are many characterful old buildings here, but little space for removal vans. Hodimont on the left bank is a densely built, mixed neighbourhood with small shops. On the heights lies Heusy, with villas from the era of the wool manufacturers and plenty of greenery.
Ensival lies downstream on the Vesdre, while Stembert, Lambermont and Petit-Rechain are former villages on the edge of town with quieter residential streets. Please note: in the floods of July 2021, parts of Verviers along the Vesdre were badly hit – for flats near the river, ask about damage and insurance.
House hunting, work and leisure in Verviers
You can find flats via portals such as Immoweb or estate agents; landlords usually require a rental deposit in a blocked account. We do not quote specific rents because they vary greatly depending on the neighbourhood and condition. Local employers include the regional hospital CHR Verviers, the administration and many small and medium-sized businesses; then there is the larger job market in Liège and Eupen.
Students usually commute to the University of Liège, which can be reached by train. For leisure there is the Grand Théâtre de Verviers, the wool museum and the surrounding countryside with the Gileppe reservoir, the Eupen lake and the High Fens. Commuters benefit from the location near the E40 and E42 motorways.

Process: registering in Verviers after the move
In Verviers, the Service Étrangers in the town hall is responsible for registration (Place du Marché 55, 4800 Verviers). According to the town, it looks after EU citizens, among others, who wish to live in Belgium as employees, students or with sufficient means. If you are staying longer than three months, according to the town you must submit the complete documents for the registration certificate (Annexe 19) when you apply, otherwise the application will not be considered. Which documents are required in an individual case depends on your situation; the town recommends discussing it in person.
The Service Étrangers only sees people by appointment: Mondays and Fridays 8.00 am to 12.30 pm, Tuesdays 8.00 am to 12.30 pm and 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm, Wednesdays 8.00 am to 12.30 pm and 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, and the first Saturday of the month 10.00 am to 12.00 noon; it is closed on Thursdays. Contact: tel. +32 87 32 53 82, [email protected]. The appointment categories, for example "Adresse - Séjour" (address – residence), can be found on verviers.be under "Prendre rendez-vous" (make an appointment).
If you later move within Belgium, according to the Federal Public Service Interior (ibz.rrn.fgov.be) there is a deadline of eight working days from the actual move-in; you report it to the municipality of your new place of residence.
We did not find separate instructions on verviers.be for a reserved space in front of the building. Ask the parking office ([email protected], +32 87 32 75 35) in good time. How we organise no-parking zones can be found under parking restriction zone.
Verviers day to day: parking zones, bulky waste and the Recyparc
According to the town, parking in Verviers is regulated in several places, including the centre, its surroundings and some outlying zones. There are the categories "zone payante" (pay zone) and "zone bleue" (blue zone) as well as a residents' card (carte de riverain); the town provides the zone map as a PDF. The charges for 2026 to 2031 were adopted by the municipal council on 27 October 2025.
According to the town, bulky waste is collected free of charge if you register with the organisation RCYCL beforehand (tel. 087/55.48.78, [email protected]). A maximum of 3 m³ per collection and four collections per household per year are permitted. Collection takes place on Mondays or Tuesdays; put the items out the evening before after 6 pm or on the collection day before 5 am. Waste left out without registration is considered illegal and can incur an administrative fine.
The Recyparc (recycling centre) is at Pont de Sommeleville 2. It is open Tuesday to Friday 9.00 am to 12.30 pm and 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm, and Saturday 8.30 am to 12.30 pm and 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm; it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Access is with the electronic identity card, and a maximum of 2 m³ per vehicle per day is permitted.
More about the town can be found in our guide to living in Verviers; we describe the journey there in the long-distance moving guide.
