Moving to Wrocław (Breslau): the Rynek, the Oder, the dwarfs and the Centennial Hall
at a glance
Wrocław (German: Breslau) is the capital of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship and, after Warsaw and Kraków, the third-largest city in Poland. The city lies on the Oder, and its centre is the market square, the Rynek; all over the city stand the little dwarf figures that go back to the opposition group Orange Alternative. In 2016 Wrocław was European Capital of Culture, and the Centennial Hall of 1913 is a well-known landmark. Anyone planning a move to Wrocław benefits from the short route from Berlin and needs no customs papers within the EU.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 351 km via the A15 and the Polish A4 to Wrocław; that is about 5.5 hours including a break. Because both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Wrocław or from Wrocław back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. You will find more on the formalities under international move.

How your move to Wrocław works with us
Planning from Berlin, arrival in Lower Silesia
We have no branch in Wrocław; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether a period building in Nadodrze, a flat in Krzyki or a house in Biskupin. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address, following the City of Wrocław's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of the flat.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Wrocław
Wrocław's districts: where a move pays off
Wrocław is divided into five boroughs – Stare Miasto (Old Town), Śródmieście, Krzyki, Fabryczna and Psie Pole – which break down into many residential neighbourhoods. The old town with the Rynek, colourful townhouses and Wrocław's dwarfs is central and in demand. The Biskupin neighbourhood in the east has quiet, green streets, while Krzyki in the south has many newer residential buildings.
Psie Pole in the north-east is characterised more by housing estates and commercial areas. If you are looking for an urban feel, you will find period flats near the Oder in Ołbin and Nadodrze. We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition. For the move, what counts is access, the floor and the stairwell.
Employers, universities and quality of life in Wrocław
Wrocław is an important business and university centre in Poland. The University of Wrocław and the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Politechnika Wrocławska) with around 35,000 students attract many young people from Poland and abroad. Copernicus Airport is served by numerous international airlines.
A lively cultural scene along the Oder, the Centennial Hall and green spaces such as Szczytnicki Park add to the quality of life. Many newcomers appreciate the proximity to Germany: from Berlin-Moabit it is only around 351 km via the A15 and the Polish A4, which often makes a move to Wrocław possible in a single day. Some Polish makes dealing with authorities and flat hunting easier.

Getting to Wrocław (Breslau): lorry zones and use of the road
For a move from Berlin to Wrocław (Breslau), access to the building is the key point. The City of Wrocław restricts lorries of 9 tonnes permissible total weight and above within a zone: according to wroclaw.pl, vehicles up to 9 tonnes and public transport have no restriction. For vehicles from 9 to 12 tonnes, entry is temporarily allowed around the clock, but only with a documented destination in the zone and on the designated corridors. Above 12 tonnes, the time windows 4.00 to 6.00, 9.00 to 13.00 and 19.00 to 22.00 apply. According to the city, drivers must carry a document proving the purpose of the journey, such as an order. The city's geoportal shows the signage; for sign B-5 with 18 tonnes, an exemption is only provided for in justified, non-one-off cases.
If you want to occupy the road outside the building for longer, you pay a fee for using the road space. According to the City of Wrocław (page as of January 2023), it depends on the type of road section, the road category and the width occupied. The page does not name a procedure specifically for removals, so coordination takes place in advance with the road authority.
You will find border formalities in the article Moving to Poland: customs and process, and the overview of the route under Long-distance move to Poland.
Wrocław: registration, deregistration in Germany and tolls for the removal lorry
Deregistration in Germany: if you move from Berlin to Wrocław and no longer have a home in Germany, you deregister under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG) within two weeks of moving out. Deregistration is possible no earlier than one week before moving out.
Registration in Poland (zameldowanie): gov.pl states that EU citizens must register no later than the 30th day after moving in. Anyone staying less than 30 days does not have to register. Registration itself is free of charge. For EU citizens it is also possible online; for this you need a Profil Zaufany (trusted profile) or a qualified electronic signature. You need a valid travel or identity document, proof of your right to live there (for example a tenancy agreement) and the registration form, which is available from the municipal office. For non-EU citizens, gov.pl gives a deadline of four days and no online registration; this does not apply to you if you are an EU citizen. The City of Wrocław groups the information on wroclaw.pl under the residence registration section.
Tolls: according to etoll.gov.pl, Poland charges an electronic toll (e-TOLL) for heavy vehicles on GDDKiA road sections. For this you register in the system, enter the vehicles and choose the payment method. Whether your removal vehicle is affected depends on the vehicle type; we take it into account in the quote for international moves.
