From Berlin to Hallein
Moving to Hallein: salt town on the Salzach
Guide
A move to Hallein takes you to the second-largest town in the state of Salzburg and the district capital of the Tennengau. Hallein lies on the Salzach at the foot of the Dürrnberg, whose salt has shaped the town since Celtic times: the salt mine is one of the oldest in the world and is now a show mine, and the Celtic Museum is one of the most important in Europe. The municipality comprises nine districts – from the old town to Bad Dürrnberg up on the mountain. For your private move we clarify access and parking space in advance.
We start in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 736 km via the A9, A99 and A8 to Salzburg and on to Hallein; including the statutory break that is about 11.5 hours, usually over two days with loading and unloading. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Hallein or back to Berlin, we quote the fixed price after a survey. As Austria is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods; on the way, the lorry pays the distance-based GO toll for vehicles over 3.5 t. More on this under Moving Berlin – Hallein.

What we take care of when you move to Hallein
Planning in Berlin, arrival in Hallein
We have no branch in Hallein; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a townhouse in the old town or a house in Bad Dürrnberg. The municipality of Hallein has no dedicated online entry on parking restrictions for removals (Übersiedlungen) – so we clarify the parking space for the lorry with the town office (Stadtamt) in advance. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

For smaller volumes or single items, a part load to Hallein can be cheaper: your belongings share the loading space with other consignments on the same route towards Salzburg. For this you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few items are to follow.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Hallein raises many questions: which district suits you, how quickly do you have to register with the registration form (Meldezettel), who signs it, and where do bulky items go before moving in? This guide presents Hallein's nine districts, from Burgfried and Taxach to Bad Dürrnberg, and sums up what the municipality says about the registration office and recycling collection points. On top of that comes the long journey of around 736 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Hallein
The nine districts of Hallein
The municipality of Hallein comprises nine districts: Hallein with the old town, Burgfried, Gamp, Gries, Au, Neualm, Taxach, Adneter Riedl and Bad Dürrnberg. The town lies in the Salzach valley; in the south, the Salzach flows in through the Pass Lueg from the Tennengebirge mountains, and the Pernerinsel island lies in the middle of the river.
The old town is densely built up, with narrow lanes and old townhouses without lifts. Bad Dürrnberg lies up on the salt mountain – there, access and gradient matter more than the floor. In the districts in the valley there are detached houses as well as housing complexes. For the move, the specific address is what counts: we clarify stairs, access and parking space during the survey. Our private move service adapts to it.
Salt, Celts and a town of schools
Hallein calls itself a salt town, Celtic town, industrial town, school town and cultural town. The salt mine on the Dürrnberg was closed in 1986 and is now a show mine; the Celtic Museum displays finds from the Celtic settlement. Kaltenhausen is home to the oldest brewery in the state of Salzburg, and the Hallein School of Sculpture is considered Austria's first vocational school. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
For newcomers from Germany: within the EU there is no customs duty on household goods, but there is a short registration deadline of three days. Anyone staying longer than three months must also apply for a registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) within four months. More on this in our checklist for Austria.
Calculating moving costs – it's that simple
If you are planning to move, you naturally want to know what to expect. The basic rule is: the more rooms, the greater the effort. For a 1-room flat prices start from €339, for 2 rooms from €599. A 3-room flat costs from €889, a 4-room flat from €1,289. For a house or villa there is no flat-rate price scheme – here we prepare an individual quote. For a long-distance move we charge from €4.15 per kilometre. Arrange a free survey now to receive a binding quote.
What affects the moving price?
The price of your move depends largely on the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is usually charged from €4.15/km. The floor, whether there is a lift and whether a parking restriction zone is needed also play a role. Additional services such as furniture assembly or part loads can affect the price further.

More routes from Berlin
We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) for private and business customers – including to other EU countries such as Austria. What counts for cross-border moves is explained under International move; long routes can be found under Long-distance moves. We also plan the route from Hallein back to Berlin with you.
Meldezettel in Hallein: registering after moving from Germany
If you move from Germany to Hallein, you have to observe two registration procedures. In Germany, under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG), you deregister within two weeks of moving out if you are not moving into a new home in Germany; deregistration is possible at the earliest one week before moving out. In Hallein a much shorter deadline applies.
- Registering your main residence: according to the municipality of Hallein, within 3 days of taking up residence.
- Documents: a completed registration form (Meldezettel) and a passport or identity card; foreign nationals must always identify themselves with a passport or identity card.
- Signatures: you yourself and the accommodation provider (Unterkunftgeber) sign the original; a tenancy agreement does not replace the signature.
- Online: according to the municipality, registration is possible with ID Austria via oesterreich.gv.at.
The registration office is located in the town office (Stadtamt), Schöndorferplatz 14, 5400 Hallein (telephone +43 6245 8988 0, email [email protected]). Public opening hours are Mondays from 8 am to 12 noon and 4 pm to 6 pm, and Tuesdays to Fridays from 8 am to 12 noon. The page does not state any fees.
Also ask the town office early whether a parking restriction for the removal van is needed for your street and which body orders it. We describe our process for long routes under Long-distance move and in the long-distance moving guide for Hallein.
Hallein's recycling points, parking and districts
Bulky items often accumulate before a move. The municipality of Hallein lists four recycling collection points: Gamp, Rehhof (Schloßallee 70b), Rif (Rifer Hauptstraße 21) and the Wirtschaftshof (Neualmerstraße 21). The telephone number for enquiries is +43 6245 8988 300, or +43 6245 8988 330 for the Wirtschaftshof. The page does not give opening times or rules on bulky waste; ask about these in advance at the town office or via [email protected].
The municipality's waste calendar and its waste separation guidance also help you sort household leftovers properly before the move. For parking, the town refers to Halleiner Parkgaragen GmbH (Griesmeisterplatz 8, telephone +43 6245 83654), which also runs its own website.
Several districts appear on the municipality's website, such as Rif, Gamp, Neualm and Burgfried. Rif has a community centre, and Burgfried has the Treffpunkt Burgfried Süd meeting point. The town also provides information on road closures: recent topics were the renovation of Riesenschmiedstraße and the bridge construction site on Kastenhofweg, which also affects bus route 43. Before moving day, check whether roadworks are planned in your street and, if necessary, plan an alternative access route for the removal van. A call to the town office on +43 6245 8988 0 quickly clears up such questions.
