Living in Hallein: Districts Rents & the Meldezettel

Hallein for New Residents
Hallein: the Salzach, the Dürrnberg and Salzburg in 20 Minutes
Settling in, not just moving
With just over 21,600 inhabitants, Hallein is the second-largest town in the federal state of Salzburg and the district capital of the Tennengau. The town lies on the Salzach at the foot of the Dürrnberg salt mountain; the salt mine closed in 1986 and is now a show mine. Hallein calls itself a town of salt works, Celts and schools: there is the Celtic Museum, the Pernerinsel island with the Old Salt Works and the grave of Franz Xaver Gruber, the composer of “Silent Night”.
If you move from Germany, you need no customs paperwork – Austria is an EU member – but you do need a Meldezettel (registration form) within three days. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Hallein. From Berlin it is around 736 km via the A9, A99, A8 and the Tauern motorway; with a driving-time break we plan two days. More on our page Moving Berlin – Hallein.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Hallein
Route, access, parking
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Hallein-based firm. With a route of around 736 km, we plan the journey over two days including a driving-time break and clarify with you in advance where the lorry can stop in Hallein – in the old town as well as on steeper access roads towards the Dürrnberg. We have not found any specific guidance from the town on a parking area for moves; we clarify this early with the town office. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request.

Hallein
for Newcomers
If you are moving to Hallein, you choose between the old town on the Salzach, districts such as Burgfried, Gamp or Taxach, and higher-lying Bad Dürrnberg. Your commute, S-Bahn stop and carrying route on moving day depend on this. It is best to have your landlord sign the registration form at the key handover. On request we take care of furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet available – storage of your furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Hallein
Nine Districts Between the Salzach and the Dürrnberg
Hallein is divided into nine districts: Adneter Riedl, Au, Bad Dürrnberg, Burgfried, Gamp, Gries, Hallein, Neualm and Taxach. The old town lies on the Salzach; opposite is the Pernerinsel with the Old Salt Works, where the Salzburg Festival also performs. Gries has the junction for the A10 Tauern motorway, and Burgfried an S-Bahn stop.
Bad Dürrnberg lies above the town on the salt mountain, where the salt mine can now be visited as a show mine. Other well-known localities are Rif, home to the University and State Sports Centre Salzburg, and Rehhof. For old-town lanes and hillside locations we plan vehicle size and team in advance so that the carrying distance stays short. Which district suits you depends mainly on your commute and transport connections.
Working, School and Leisure in Hallein
Companies based in Hallein include the pulp producer AustroCel, Robert Bosch GmbH, the machine builder Emco, Erdal, the Hofbräu Kaltenhausen brewery – the oldest in the state of Salzburg – and the Landesklinik Hallein hospital. Many commute to Salzburg: by regional express or the S3 it takes 15 to 20 minutes. Hallein is known as a school town with 18 schools, including the HTBL technical college, which grew out of the first vocational school of the monarchy (1871).
For leisure there is the Celtic Museum, the salt mine as a show mine, the Silent Night Museum and the Tauern cycle path, which runs through the town. In Rif, the Salt Trade Route branches off towards Bad Reichenhall. There are five municipal and five private kindergartens. We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source.
What a Move to Hallein Costs
How much will my move cost? We are happy to answer this question directly: we move 1-room flats from €359, 2-room flats from €589, 3-room flats from €884 and 4-room flats from €1,269. If you live in a house or villa, you receive an individual quote from us, as the effort varies greatly. If you need to go further, we charge long-distance moves from €3.95 per kilometre. It is best to clarify all the details during a free survey.
What the price depends on
The price of your move depends largely on the volume of your household goods, the distance (from €3.95/km) and the floor and whether there is a lift. A required parking restriction zone can also affect the total cost. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a shared load are charged separately.

Registering in Hallein: Meldezettel at the Town Office on Schöndorferplatz
If you move to Hallein, you register your new residence with a Meldezettel (registration form). According to the registration office of the municipality of Hallein, the deadline is three days after taking up residence, i.e. after actually moving in. The responsible office is the town office at Schöndorferplatz 14, 5400 Hallein.
You must bring the completed registration form and your passport or ID card. The form carries two original signatures: your own as the person required to register (bottom right) and that of the accommodation provider (bottom left). According to the registration office, a tenancy agreement does not replace the landlord's signature. If you move into your own property, you sign both fields yourself.
- Opening hours: Monday 8:00–12:00 and 16:00–18:00, Tuesday to Friday 8:00–12:00
- Phone: +43 6245 8988 0, email: [email protected]
The town also refers to online registration with ID Austria via oesterreich.gv.at. According to oesterreich.gv.at, this route requires that you have already been registered in Austria at some point. So if you come from Germany, the first time you go to the office with the paper form. It is best to have your landlord sign the form at the key handover. More on the process in our article Moving to Austria: customs, formalities and process.
Everyday Life in Hallein: Recycling Points in Gamp and Rif, Waste Calendar, Car Park
After moving in, you will have boxes and old furniture to get rid of. The municipality of Hallein lists four recycling collection points: Gamp (Pingitzzerkai 8), Rehhof (Schloßallee 70b), Rif (Rifer Hauptstraße 21) and the municipal depot (Neualmerstraße 21). The town provides information on +43 6245 8988 300 (depot: 330) or by email at [email protected]. The overview page does not give opening hours, lists of accepted items or rules on bulky waste. So ask before you go.
You will find your collection dates in the town's waste calendar: you select the calendar, locality, street and house number and can download the dates as a PDF, CSV or calendar export.
For parking, the town names Halleiner Parkgaragen GmbH at Griesmeisterplatz 8 (phone +43 6245 83654, Monday to Saturday 9:00–11:00; the page does not say whether this applies to the office or the car parks). Tariffs are on halleiner-parkgaragen.at. Check access and a parking space for the removal van in advance. We have not found any specific guidance on the town's website for reserving a space outside the building for a move. Clarify this early with the town office.
If you are also considering Salzburg as a place to live, you will find a comparison in the overview Living in Salzburg. Residential areas and costs around Hallein are covered in the Hallein moving guide.
