Moving to Hasselt: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Hasselt
Moving to Hasselt: Limburg's capital on the Albert Canal
Guide
A move to Hasselt takes you to Flanders, to the capital of the Belgian province of Limburg. The city lies on the Albert Canal and the Demer, around 45 km north of Liège, roughly halfway between Aachen and Leuven. Hasselt is known for its jenever, the Fashion Museum, the Japanese Garden and the Virga Jesse festival, which is celebrated every seven years. In the city centre, bollards and zones control access. For your private move we clarify loading time and parking space in advance.
We start in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 683 km via the A2, A1 and A46 and through the Netherlands to Hasselt; including the statutory break that is about 10.5 hours, usually spread over two days with loading and unloading. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Hasselt or back to Berlin, we quote the fixed price after a survey. As Belgium is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods; on the way, the lorry pays the Viapass kilometre toll for vehicles over 3.5 t. More on this under Long-distance move to Belgium.

What we take care of when you move to Hasselt
Planning in Berlin, arrival in Hasselt
We have no branch in Hasselt; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat inside the Small Ring or a house in Kuringen. If the lorry occupies the pavement, carriageway or parking spaces, the city of Hasselt requires a permit for the use of public space (“Inname openbaar domein”); the city puts up the signs. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

Move affordably with a part load
For smaller volumes or single items, a part load to Hasselt can be cheaper: your belongings share the loading space with other consignments on the same route towards Belgium. For this you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few items are to follow.

Everything

A move to Hasselt raises many questions: which part of town suits you, how do you reserve a space for the removal van, when may you load in the city centre and how does registration work in Belgium? This guide presents the city centre and sub-municipalities such as Kuringen or Stevoort and sums up what the city of Hasselt says about the use of public space (“Inname openbaar domein”) and loading times. Frequently asked questions about moving to Hasselt
Hasselt's city centre and sub-municipalities
Besides the city centre, Hasselt includes several former villages: Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Wimmertingen, Kermt, Spalbeek, Kuringen, Stokrooie and Stevoort. The city centre is laid out in rings: inside the Small Ring lies the centre with the Grote Markt and St Quintinus Cathedral, and between the Small and Large Ring are the densely built-up neighbourhoods.
The centre has pedestrian and low-traffic zones, retractable bollards and separate restrictions for heavy vehicles; the sub-municipalities tend to have detached houses. For the move, the specific address therefore matters: we clarify access, floor and parking space during the survey. Our private move service adapts to this.
Jenever, university and the Virga Jesse festival
Hasselt received its town charter in 1232, has been the capital of the province of Limburg since 1839 and a bishop's see since 1967. In the 18th and 19th centuries jenever distilling made the city known; today Hasselt is above all a centre for trade and services. Hasselt University, founded in 1971 as the Limburgs Universitair Centrum, is located in neighbouring Diepenbeek. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
For newcomers from Germany: within the EU there is no customs duty on household goods, but you must register with the city, followed by a residence check by the police. All the steps are listed in our checklist for Belgium.

Removal van in Hasselt: permit for the Inname openbaar domein
For your move to Hasselt you need a permit from the city if the removal van occupies the pavement, cycle path, carriageway or parking spaces. The city of Hasselt calls this “Inname openbaar domein” (use of public space). According to hasselt.be, submit the application at least 5 to 10 working days in advance: 10 working days if the pavement, cycle path, verge or carriageway is affected, 5 working days to reserve a parking space. The application is made online via Spotbooking; the number of square metres required and a sketch with dimensions and the planned position are mandatory.
- Fee according to the city: €2.50 per m² per day inside and on the Small Ring, €1 between the Small and Large Ring, €0.50 outside the Large Ring
- Putting up no-parking signs and barriers by the city: €25
- In the centre the signs must be in place at least 24 hours beforehand, elsewhere at least 48 hours
Payment is made online after the permit is granted. According to the city, it only puts up no-parking signs and a barrier with traffic sign C3 if a street is closed. If you put up the signs yourself, you are responsible for a correct signage plan. You will find your permit in the MijnHasselt app under “Toelatingen”. Details of the Berlin–Hasselt route can be found in the long-distance moving guide and in the living guide.
Hasselt city centre: loading and unloading, bollards and change of address
Hasselt's city centre has various zones. According to the city, there are pedestrian zones, cycle zones, low-traffic zones and closed zones. In some streets, retractable bollards or a barrier ensure that only vehicles with a valid access permit can enter. Restrictions for heavy vehicles also apply in some streets and neighbourhoods.
For loading and unloading in the city centre, hasselt.be gives the time window 7:00 to 11:00 am. Only during this window are the bollards lowered. Outside it, you need the permit for the use of public space, with which you receive a pass (doorlaatbewijs) for the bollards. The city points out that parking in a loading zone without loading or unloading can be punished with a GAS administrative fine. The page gives no vehicle limits for a large removal van, so you should clarify these with the city in advance.
Change of address: anyone moving to or within Hasselt must report the address within 8 days, according to the city. This can be done online or at the city hall. You should bring your eID and the details of everyone moving with you; reporting is free of charge. Our page on international moves gives an overview of the process and prices.
