Moving to Bydgoszcz (Bromberg): Costs & Process

Destination: Bydgoszcz
Moving to Bydgoszcz: the Brda, granaries and Opera Nova
explained in brief
Bydgoszcz (German: Bromberg) is, alongside Toruń, one of the two capitals of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and, with around 326,000 residents, the eighth-largest city in Poland. The Brda (Brahe) flows through the centre and joins the Vistula in the east of the city. Half-timbered granaries, Mill Island and the "Bydgoszcz Venice" on the water shape the cityscape, and the Opera Nova makes the city a centre of music. If you are planning a move to Bydgoszcz, you need no customs papers within the EU, but you must register within 30 days.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 407 km via Poznań and the S5 to Bydgoszcz; that takes about 6 hours including a break. As both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Bydgoszcz or from Bydgoszcz back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. Read more about the process in the guide to long-distance moves to Poland.

Our part of your move to Bydgoszcz
Planned in Berlin, arriving on the Brda and Vistula
We have no branch in Bydgoszcz; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether an Art Nouveau building in Śródmieście, a flat in Fordon or a house in Osowa Góra. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address under the City of Bydgoszcz's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Bydgoszcz raises many questions: which district suits you, how does the lorry get into the city centre, by when must you register and which tolls apply on the way? This guide introduces districts from Śródmieście and Fordon to Osowa Góra, explains registration (zameldowanie), e-TOLL and deregistration in Germany, and describes the roughly 407 km drive from Berlin via Poznań. Bydgoszcz is a centre of industry and services: the city is home to the rail vehicle manufacturer PESA, the IT service provider Atos and the Military Aviation Works, among others. For students there is a wide range of universities, including Kazimierz Wielki University (UKW) and a university of technology.

Bydgoszcz: road authority ZDMiKP, permits and tolls
The municipal road authority ZDMiKP is responsible for the streets in Bydgoszcz. For the use of road space, for example for kiosks and market stalls, the road space management department (Wydział Zarządzania Pasem Drogowym, ul. Toruńska 174a, tel. (52) 582 27 24 or 73) gives a processing time of up to 30 days from application. For changes to the traffic organisation, the traffic engineering department (tel. (52) 582 27 35 or 84) gives a decision within 30 days and notification at least seven days before implementation.
ZDMiKP does not list a separate procedure for removal vans or parking reservations on the pages we checked. We therefore clarify in advance with the authority whether an application is needed for your address and allow several weeks of lead time for it.
For the journey from Berlin: according to the e-TOLL portal of the Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa (National Revenue Administration), users of heavy vehicles pay the electronic toll on chargeable sections of roads managed by the GDDKiA. Before the journey, the user and vehicle are registered, the tracking device is activated and the payment method is chosen. We take this into account in route planning.
How a move to Poland works is explained in the guide to long-distance moves to Poland and under international move.
Śródmieście and the canal-side granaries: registering in Bydgoszcz
In Śródmieście and around the row of granaries by the canal, we plan the approach individually for each address. What matters is where the removal van can stop, the loading route to the front door, the floor and, if needed, a lift or furniture lift. We see this during the free survey and record it in the quote.
Anyone taking up residence in Poland will know the registration obligation (zameldowanie). According to the gov.pl portal, you register at the municipal office (urząd gminy) no later than the 30th day after moving into the flat; registration itself is free of charge. The page is aimed at people who change their place of residence or return from abroad, and names the ID card or passport as the required document.
For EU citizens from other countries, Your Europe points out that after three months' stay, registration with the competent authority may be required, usually at the town hall or the local police.
On customs: the exemption for removal goods (form 0350) described by zoll.de concerns moves from non-EU countries into the EU. We clarify in the planning stage which papers your move from Berlin to Bydgoszcz needs. More on this can be found under Moving to Poland: customs, formalities and process and in the moving checklist for Poland.
