Hasselt for New Residents
Hasselt: the Albert Canal, the Grote Markt and Jenever in Flanders
Settling in, not just moving
Hasselt has been the capital of the Belgian province of Limburg since 1839 and the seat of a diocese since 1967. The city lies on the Albert Canal and the Demer, on the A 13 and around ten kilometres south of the Lummen motorway interchange on the A 2 towards Brussels and Aachen. The official language is Dutch – for newcomers from Germany a language course is worthwhile. The centre is formed by the Grote Markt with the half-timbered Het Sweert house, St Quintinus Cathedral and the 't Scheep town hall. Hasselt is known for jenever: there is a National Jenever Museum and the Jeneverfeesten every October. So if you move to Hasselt, you also plan for a new language and new dealings with the authorities.
Today Hasselt is above all a centre of trade and administration. According to Wikipedia, around 3,500 people work on the Corda Campus, the former Philips site in the north-east of the city; then there are Hasselt University and PXL University of Applied Sciences. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Belgium. From Berlin it is around 683 km via the A2 and the Netherlands; with a driving-time break we plan two days. What else is involved in moving to Belgium is summarised in our Belgium checklist.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Hasselt
Route, permit, parking
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and have no base in Belgium. That is why we clarify the details early: if the removal van occupies public space, according to the city of Hasselt it needs a permit, applied for at least five to ten working days in advance, with a sketch of the area. We plan the roughly 683 km over two days including a driving-time break and agree the arrival time with you. There are no customs formalities within the EU. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give the price after the survey as a fixed price.

Registering in Hasselt: Deadline, Online Notification and the Wijkagent Check
If you move to Hasselt from elsewhere in Belgium, according to Stad Hasselt you must report the change of address within 8 days of moving. The notification is free of charge. It is done online via the portal hasselt.egovflow.be (form BV-A-019) or via the MijnHasselt app, or alternatively at the town hall by appointment or without an appointment during opening hours. An adult member of the household can register everyone moving with them, but needs their identity details to do so.
- According to the city, an online notification is processed after about 3 days.
- The wijkagent usually checks unannounced within about two weeks whether you actually live there. So do not register weeks before moving in, otherwise the application may be rejected.
- After approval, you should have the address on your eID updated at the town hall within one month.
- Anyone who fails to report the change of address risks being removed from the population register by the authorities.
If you are moving from Germany, the German side also applies: under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz), anyone moving out of a flat without moving into a new one in Germany must deregister within two weeks. For moving from abroad, the city has its own guidance for non-Belgians, which you should clarify in advance. Detailed planning help is in our guide to a long-distance move to Hasselt.
Everyday Life in Hasselt: Residents' Card, Parking Budget, Buses and Wijken
If you are registered in a parking zone in Hasselt, you can apply to the city for a residents' parking card. According to Stad Hasselt, the first two cards per address are free, the third costs €200 per year; more than three cards per address are not possible. You apply online in the e-portal (log in with eID, itsme or MyGov.be) or at the Verkeerswinkel (traffic office) in the 't Scheep town hall; the check takes up to 5 working days. In addition, households resident in Hasselt receive a free Hasselts Parkeerbudget of up to 100 parking hours per year for the Cultuurcentrum, Astrid and Dusartplein car parks.
In local transport, according to the city, a journey within Hasselt with the 10-journey card (Hasseltpas) costs €1; the Buzzy Pazz is free for residents aged 6 to 20. For rail, you can choose between Hasselt and Kiewit stations.
New residents are invited to a Welkomavond (welcome evening) at the Stadhuis 't Scheep, which the city organises for individual districts in turn; there are five dates a year and attendance is free. For districts such as Kuringen, Kermt, Stevoort or Sint-Lambrechts-Herk there are also recycling parks (recyclageparken, for example in Kuringen and Sint-Lambrechts-Herk). If you live on a street without your own parking space, apply in good time for use of public space for the removal van (at least 5 to 10 working days in advance) and read our notes on the parking restriction zone. More on neighbourhoods and costs is in the Hasselt guide.
