Moving to Dordrecht: Costs Process & Districts

Dordrecht at a glance
Moving to Dordrecht: Canals, Rivers and New Waterside Quarters
Step by step
A move to Dordrecht takes you to the oldest city of the former Holland: it received its town charter in 1220. It lies where the Beneden Merwede divides into the Noord, Oude Maas and Dordtsche Kil; to the south and east begins De Biesbosch National Park. The historic Binnenstad (old town) with canals and gabled houses, the new waterside quarter of Stadswerven and quiet districts such as Sterrenburg and Dubbeldam offer very different homes.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 728 km to Dordrecht; by lorry, that is about eleven hours including breaks, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. Within the EU, your household goods need no customs papers. We quote the fixed price after the survey. More on this: Planning a move to the Netherlands.

What we take care of when you move to Dordrecht
From Berlin to the Merwede
We have no branch in the Netherlands; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairs in advance – whether a gabled house on a canal, a new build in Stadswerven or a terraced house in Dubbeldam. For the Binnenstad, we apply for an RVV exemption (RVV-Ontheffing); for narrow stairs, we plan a furniture lift. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Dordrecht
Districts of Dordrecht at a glance
The historic Binnenstad with its canals and gabled houses particularly attracts lovers of old buildings and city life, while Stadswerven, a newly developed waterside quarter, offers modern new-build flats right on the river. Families appreciate the green, quiet districts of Sterrenburg and Dubbeldam, with good infrastructure, schools and playgrounds. If you want to live on a budget, Krispijn and Wielwijk offer affordable housing with good connections to the central station.
Stadspolder scores with shopping facilities and solid transport links for commuters to Rotterdam. Each district has its own character, which is why a viewing before the final move to Dordrecht is always worthwhile.
The housing market in Dordrecht
Compared with Rotterdam or Amsterdam, rents in Dordrecht are considerably more moderate, which makes the city particularly attractive for families and commuters. Flats in the Binnenstad or in Stadswerven are in particularly high demand, while districts such as Krispijn or Wielwijk are cheaper. The housing market is tight, so an early search and quick decisions are important.
Owner-occupied flats and terraced houses are also in demand, especially in the quieter neighbourhoods of Sterrenburg and Dubbeldam. Anyone commuting to Rotterdam for work benefits from the good rail connection and often lower rents than in the port city itself.
Transparent prices for every move
Whether a small flat or a large house – with us you pay fairly and transparently. Moving a 1-room flat starts from €349, a 2-room flat costs from €615. For 3 rooms we charge from €879, for 4 rooms from €1,324. A house or villa always receives an individual quote, as many factors play a role here. For long-distance moves, a price per kilometre from €3.80/km applies. Take advantage of our free survey to get clarity about your individual costs.
What makes a move more or less expensive?
A large volume means more effort and therefore higher costs. The distance, which we charge from €3.80/km, as well as the floor and lift also noticeably affect the price. A parking restriction zone ensures smooth processes but costs extra. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load can be booked at any time.

Binnenstad Dordrecht: RVV-ontheffing, autoluw area and notification
Anyone in Dordrecht who wants to park where it is normally prohibited applies to the Gemeente for an RVV-ontheffing (exemption under the Dutch road traffic regulations). The Gemeente explicitly gives a removal van as an example. The Gemeente needs up to eight weeks for the decision and cannot guarantee a timely answer for an application made less than six weeks before the start. The Ontheffing costs 73.35 euros per vehicle and does not exempt you from parking fees. The application is made online via the Gemeente's Loket (online counter).
There are separate exemptions for the autoluw (low-traffic) Binnenstad and the pedestrian area. According to the Gemeente, a move in this area requires its own Ontheffing, for example for one day or permanently; you apply for the day exemption with DigiD or eHerkenning. The Knipontheffing, by contrast, does not give access to the area.
- Crane, lifting device or removal van as an object in the street: according to the Gemeente, a notification is sufficient for a maximum of one day, at least seven days in advance and free of charge.
- Otherwise a permit is required, which the Gemeente decides on within eight weeks.
- If the removal van blocks the street completely, a notification via Melvin is required; you may only put measures in place after approval.
We clarify which option suits your address during the survey. More on this in the long-distance moving guide for Dordrecht.
Dordrecht after the move: gabled houses, Stadswerven and registration
In the Binnenstad with its canals and in the new-build quarter of Stadswerven, moving day looks different. During the survey, we check for each address where the van can stop, how long the loading route is and whether stairs, a lift or, for gabled houses, a furniture lift suit the flat. The results are included in the quote.
After moving in, you report your move to the Gemeente. According to the information page for new residents, you report it no more than 28 days beforehand or within five days afterwards, online or by appointment; help is available by phone on 14 078 or at the Stadswinkel counter. If you live in the paid parking zone, you can apply for a digital parkeervergunning (parking permit) for your car. Residents can register visitors via the 2Park system. For questions about permits, the Gemeente offers a contact form and, according to its page, replies within five working days.
On customs: on zoll.de, German Customs describes the exemption for household removal goods explicitly for moves from non-EU countries into the EU. We clarify during planning which papers your move from Berlin to the Netherlands needs. Read more in Moving to the Netherlands: customs, formalities and process.
