Venlo for Newcomers: Five Districts on the Maas Right on the German Border

Newcomer's Guide to Venlo
Venlo: A Fresh Start on the German-Dutch Border
The first few weeks
Venlo lies in the Dutch province of Limburg on the Maas and borders directly on the German districts of Kleve and Viersen. For many newcomers from Germany, the step across the border is therefore a short one: on the RE 13, trains run via Viersen and Mönchengladbach to Düsseldorf and beyond, and by road the A40 and A61 connect to Dutch motorways. Within the EU, household goods need no customs papers. Find out more about our home removal service at Home Removal.
Whether you are moving to Venlo from the Ruhr area, from Berlin or from another region – we set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and take care of packing, transport and assembly at a fixed price after a survey; your belongings are covered under the HGB. You register with the Gemeente (municipality) in person by appointment. More on international moves. This way your move to Venlo becomes an orderly transition.

How we prepare your move
Access, Zone, Appointment
On moving day in Venlo, access matters most: according to the Gemeente, a zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone) for vans and lorries will apply in the centre from 1 January 2027. That is why we clarify the vehicle, time slot and parking space in advance – in the centre as well as in Blerick or Tegelen. We set off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); we quote the fixed price after a survey, and your belongings are covered under the HGB. Within the EU there are no customs rules for household goods – which makes a move across the border easy to plan.

What
newcomers should settle early
A move to Venlo brings some particularities that purely domestic moves do not have: registration in person at the Stadskantoor, choosing a Dutch health insurer and deciding which district suits you. If you are coming from Germany, also remember to deregister in Germany and think about your car and tax questions when working across the border. Beyond the home removal itself, we advise you on practical questions for moving day. Details at Home Removal.

Questions About Living in Venlo
The Five Districts of Venlo
The municipality of Venlo consists of five districts: Venlo itself with around 41,800 inhabitants (1 January 2024), Blerick with almost 28,000, Tegelen with around 18,800, Belfeld with just over 5,500, and Arcen, Lomm and Velden with around 9,600 inhabitants together. Blerick, on the left bank of the Maas, has been part of the town since 1940, Belfeld and Tegelen since 2001.
The Gemeente itself divides the Venlo district into Centrum, Oost, Zuid, Noord and Noord-Oost; Blerick also includes Hout-Blerick and Boekend, and Tegelen also includes Steyl. If you are choosing between the centre and Blerick, it is best to try out the routes to work, school and the shops beforehand. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here.
Border Location, Education and Daily Life in Venlo
Venlo benefits from its location: five motorways lead to or through the town, including the link between the German A40 and the Dutch A67, and between the A61 and the A73 via the A74. The station is a hub for cross-border traffic; the Maas-Wupper-Express (RE 13) runs via Viersen, Mönchengladbach and Düsseldorf to Hamm. For studies there is Fontys University of Applied Sciences and HAS University of Applied Sciences.
We deliberately do not give reliable rent and purchase prices here; compare offers on portals such as Funda or Pararius yourself. In your free time, the banks of the Maas, the football club VVV-Venlo and the villages in the north such as Arcen are an attraction. In 2012 Venlo hosted the Floriade world horticultural exhibition. Historically, the town was already an important railway hub in the 19th century: around 1874 the Hamburg-Venlo railway was built, after which a Venloer Bahnhof station in Hamburg was even named. The province of Limburg also offers an easy-to-navigate network of cycle paths.

Registering in Venlo: Appointment at the Stadskantoor, BRP and BSN
If you move from Germany to Venlo, the Gemeente states that you must inform it of your move in person and book an appointment beforehand. All family members who are registering must attend, including babies, children and older people. According to the Gemeente, registration in the Personal Records Database (Basisregistratie Personen, BRP) takes place at the appointment itself.
Registration is free of charge; you only pay for translations or legalisations of official documents you need to present. The Stadskantoor is at Hanzeplaats 1 (5912 AT Venlo). It is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 8 pm. You can reach the Gemeente by phone on 14 077 or +31 77 359 66 66.
The Rijksoverheid sets a deadline of five days after arrival, provided you stay in the Netherlands for longer than four months. You then receive your citizen service number (BSN). If you are only staying for a shorter time, you can register as a non-resident (RNI). Do not forget the other side: when moving abroad, § 17 (2) of the Federal Registration Act (BMG) requires you to deregister with the German registration office no later than two weeks after moving out. You can find more on the paperwork in our moving checklist for the Netherlands.
Living in Venlo: Districts According to the Gemeente and the Zero-Emission Zone
On its website, the Gemeente Venlo divides its area into four parts: Venlo (with Centrum, Oost, Zuid, Noord and Noord-Oost), Blerick with Hout-Blerick and Boekend, Tegelen with Steyl and Belfeld, and Arcen, Lomm and Velden. If you are choosing between the town centre and Blerick, you should try out the routes to work, schools and shops on site. On the Gemeente's website you will find information for each district on construction projects, waste collection and residents' parking. Make a note of your preferred addresses in advance.
One change is important for planning moving day: according to the Gemeente Venlo, a zero-emission zone for vans and lorries in the centre of Venlo will apply from 1 January 2027. If you want to drive into the centre with your own van, you should check the rules beforehand. Questions about the districts are answered by the Gemeente's district managers; the central phone number is 14 077.
Nationwide rules apply to the housing search: according to government.nl, the starting rent in the social sector for contracts from 2026 is below €932.93 a month, and in the free sector above €1,228.07. Our moving guide for Venlo describes the process, and the route is covered in the long-distance moving guide. For the neighbouring city, read Living in Nijmegen.
