Guide for newcomers
Berlin: Twelve Boroughs, Countless Neighbourhoods, One Fresh Start
The first few weeks
If you move to Berlin, you are coming to Germany's largest city, with around 3.7 million inhabitants – with narrow back courtyards in Kreuzberg and older buildings without a lift in Prenzlauer Berg. We are based in Berlin-Moabit ourselves (Stromstraße 21) and organise your home removal at a fixed price after a survey, including a parking restriction zone and packing materials on request. For your belongings we accept liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB); we factor narrow staircases in 19th-century buildings into the survey. That way your new chapter in the capital begins relaxed and predictable.
Whether you are coming for a job at Zalando, Siemens or Deutsche Bahn or moving to Berlin to study at the Humboldt University – we bring your household goods safely to their destination. Our long-distance moves to Berlin are planned individually, including from cities further away. Destinations with their own pages are listed under locations. From furniture assembly to kitchen dismantling, we take care of the full service package on request, so that you have time for the Bürgeramt and flat hunting.

Berlin
for Newcomers
Besides the transport, there is plenty to organise when moving to Berlin: registering at the Bürgeramt within 14 days, giving your new address to insurers and banks, and a ticket for the BVG and S-Bahn. Plan your Bürgeramt appointment early or register online with BundID. Parking restriction zones, reserving the lift in a new build and an internet connection are also part of it. That way you keep track of everything despite Berlin's bureaucracy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Berlin
Berlin's Neighbourhoods for Newcomers: From Prenzlauer Berg to Neukölln
Prenzlauer Berg (borough of Pankow) and Mitte are considered popular but sought-after addresses, with period-building charm and proximity to the city centre. If you prefer a more urban and international feel, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain – which together form one borough – and Neukölln offer a young environment with a lively café and bar scene. These neighbourhoods are popular with students and the start-up scene.
Families and anyone who prefers things quieter are often drawn to Pankow, Steglitz-Zehlendorf or Charlottenburg, with more green space. Spandau and Tempelhof-Schöneberg are also in demand. We do not quote specific rents for new tenancies; the official reference for existing rents is the 2026 rent index (further down). For every borough: your Bürgeramt and parking zone depend on your registered address.
Rental Market and Jobs: Why Berlin Still Attracts Newcomers
The Berlin housing market is tight. For existing rents, the 2026 rent index gives the local comparative rent; new lettings are often higher, but we do not quote specific figures without a reliable source. There are many employers: Siemens and Zalando have their headquarters in Berlin, as does Deutsche Bahn, plus the Charité and numerous start-ups and online retailers.
For students, Berlin is a top location, with the Humboldt University and the Free University, each with over 35,000 students, the Technical University and the Charité as Europe's largest medical faculty. Culture, parks such as the Tempelhofer Feld and a dense network of S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses round off the quality of life. If you are coming from another city, it is best to plan your long-distance move early, as the housing market calls for quick action.
What does a move cost? All prices in detail
Before you plan your move, you should know the approximate costs. Our guide prices: 1-room flat from €349, 2-room flat from €584, 3-room flat from €894 and 4-room flat from €1,324. Larger properties such as a house or villa are calculated individually. For a long-distance move we charge from €4.20/km. For an exact quote we recommend a free survey on site.
Calculating your move
The cost of your move is made up of the volume, the distance (from €4.20/km) and structural factors such as floor and lift. If a parking restriction zone is needed, this is also reflected in the price. Additional options are furniture assembly and a shared load.

Registering in Berlin: Bürgeramt, Deadline and Landlord Confirmation
According to service.berlin.de, you must register within 14 days of moving in. Registration is free of charge. In person at the Bürgeramt (make an appointment, minimum age 16, you sign the form yourself, and a written power of attorney is needed if someone represents you) you receive the registration certificate immediately. Online, the authority checks your documents and informs you by email.
Important documents:
- valid identity card or passport
- the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) signed by your landlord (a tenancy agreement does not replace it)
- if you have several homes, the supplementary sheet for the main residence declaration
- for children of separated parents with custody, a declaration of consent
- for your first registration in Berlin, marriage or birth certificates if applicable
Adults with German or EU citizenship can register online. You need a BundID account, an identity card or eID card with the online ID function activated and a PIN, a card reader or a modern smartphone and the AusweisApp. This does not work with an electronic residence permit. No registration is needed if you are already registered in Germany and stay in Berlin for no more than six months (from abroad: no more than three months). The citizens' hotline answers questions on 115 (Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm). As of: October 2026.
Which boroughs and localities there are is shown in the overview Removal company Berlin.
Berlin at a Glance: Boroughs, Localities and the 2026 Rent Index
Berlin is divided into twelve boroughs (Bezirke). The 2001 administrative reform merged the previous 23 boroughs, as berlin.de explains. Each borough has its own borough office and an elected borough assembly. Below them are the localities (Ortsteile), which in turn contain the well-known neighbourhoods (Kieze), such as the Graefekiez or the Wrangelkiez. Prenzlauer Berg belongs to the borough of Pankow, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain together form one borough, and Neukölln has a borough of its own. You will notice this when dealing with the authorities: your Bürgeramt and your parking zone depend on the borough of your registered address.
For the rental market, the Berlin rent index 2026 is the official reference. The Senate Department for Urban Development published it on 28 May 2026. It covers around 1.6 million flats relevant to the rent index and is based on about 17,000 data records. The median net rent excluding heating is €7.71 per square metre. You can look up the local comparative rent for your address on mietspiegel.berlin.de. This is the comparative rent for existing tenancies, not the price of newly advertised flats. The service line answers questions on (030) 90173-3860.
The borough also counts when it comes to parking: according to service.berlin.de, the resident parking permit is only available for the parking zone in which you are registered. It costs €20.40, is valid for up to two years and is best applied for online.
You can get a first impression of the neighbourhoods on Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln.
