Kiel for New Residents
Kiel: The Fjord, the Kiel Canal and Kiel Week
Settling in, not just moving
Kiel is the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein and, with almost 252,000 inhabitants, Germany's northernmost major city. The city curves in a horseshoe around the Kiel Fjord (Kieler Förde); the Kiel Canal ends in Holtenau and, according to Wikipedia, is the busiest artificial waterway in the world. Kiel is known for Kiel Week (Kieler Woche), THW Kiel and Holstein Kiel. Kiel is an independent city and the centre of the Kiel region.
For newcomers, the first tasks are registration, flat-hunting and – with children – nursery registration, which the city recommends at least three months before care begins. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Kiel. The route from Berlin – around 346 km via the A24 and A21 – is described on our page Moving Berlin – Kiel. By lorry we expect about 5.5 hours including a break; we also handle the opposite direction, Kiel → Berlin.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Kiel
Old buildings, parking zone, date
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Kiel business. That is why we ask detailed questions before moving day: is the flat in an old building with a narrow staircase, in a high-rise with a lift or in a resident parking zone with a four-hour limit? Does the lorry need a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone)? Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give you the price after the survey as a fixed price. For long routes, read Long-distance moves.

Kiel
for Newcomers
A move to Kiel involves some organisational tasks: registering online or at the town hall, electricity and water with the utility, a nursery or school place if needed and – with a car – the resident parking permit. In densely built-up neighbourhoods a parking restriction zone is worthwhile on moving day. During Kiel Week the Förde is very busy, so plan your date accordingly. If you are coming from another city, you will find more planning information under Long-distance moves.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Kiel
30 Districts on the Förde: Where Newcomers Live in Kiel
Kiel is divided into 30 districts, which are grouped into 18 local areas, each with a local advisory council. The Förde largely divides the city into a western and an eastern part: on the west bank lie Düsternbrook, Ravensberg, the Wik and, further north, Holtenau on the Kiel Canal, among others, and in the far north Schilksee with the 1972 Olympic Centre. On the east bank are districts such as Gaarden and Wellingdorf.
In the west and south of the city there are larger residential areas such as Mettenhof, Suchsdorf and Elmschenhagen. In 2026 the city is introducing new resident parking zones in Schreventeich. Where you live determines your bus line, ferry pier and carrying distance on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address. When flat-hunting, it is worth looking at the city's rent index.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Kiel
Kiel is above all a service location: according to Wikipedia, 78.5 per cent of employees work in the service sector. As the state capital, Kiel has many state authorities; there are also ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems as the largest German shipyard, the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (Kiel campus), the Förde Sparkasse, the Provinzial and the Investitionsbank. Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität) has over 27,000 students; there are also the University of Applied Sciences and the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts. Research institutes include GEOMAR and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
For leisure there is Kiel Week, beaches on the Förde, the university's Botanical Garden and the GEOMAR Aquarium. Ferries run from the port to Oslo and Gothenburg. According to Wikipedia, people in Kiel make 17 per cent of their journeys by bike. We do not give our own rent figures – use the rent index 2025.
If you do without a car in daily life, you will get around well by bus, fjord ferry and bike; the city is expanding cycle highways and cycle routes, and the Baltic Coast Cycle Route runs through Kiel. Several attempts at a new light rail system have been examined – a 2019 baseline study envisages lines to the Wik, Suchsdorf, Mettenhof and Elmschenhagen.

Registering in Kiel: Online, Town Hall Drop-in Hours and Documents
Under the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz), you must register within two weeks of moving in. According to the state capital, in Kiel you can do this online via wohnsitzanmeldung.de with the eID function of your ID card and the AusweisApp2; the registration certificate arrives by post. If you cannot do it online, you can come to the town hall without an appointment: the drop-in hours are on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 am to 12 noon.
- Bring: the landlord confirmation (a tenancy agreement does not replace it) and a valid ID.
- Children under 16: proof of the right to determine their place of residence.
- After the change of address, the new address is updated in your ID with a sticker; you do not need a new ID.
- The tax ID is assigned automatically on first registration.
- According to the city, anyone moving abroad permanently deregisters within two weeks of moving out, with the landlord confirmation, a signed form and ID, in person after booking an appointment or by post.
For other registration matters such as a new ID card or passport, appointments are required. You book these via terminvergabe.kiel.de: according to the city, new appointments appear every morning from 7:30 am, up to four weeks in advance, and demand is highest in the mornings. You register dogs with the city using a form. You can find more on costs and neighbourhoods in the Kiel guide.
Living in Kiel: Resident Parking, Rent Index and Nursery Registration
In Kiel, resident parking zones restrict long-term parking to holders of a resident parking permit. According to the state capital, where signs show a 4-hour limit, a parking disc is usually required Monday to Friday from 8 am to 8 pm; from Saturday until Monday 8 am, parking is free for everyone. For the permit you need a main residence in the zone (students and trainees can also be eligible with a secondary residence if they provide proof), a valid ID and the vehicle registration document. The permit does not entitle you to a free parking space. In Schreventeich the zones S-1 to S-3 are being newly introduced, S-3 since 26 May 2026, and S-2 and S-1 from 1 August 2026.
For tenants, the Kiel rent index 2025 provides guidance. The council recognised it on 20 March 2025; it is a qualified rent index under § 558d BGB. You can get individual copies free of charge from the Office for Housing and Basic Income Support in the New Town Hall (Stresemannplatz 5), and an online calculation is also possible. The next update is planned for 2027.
According to the city, families register their need for a nursery place at least three months before care begins via the childcare service office; you can find the nurseries on the nursery portal of the state of Schleswig-Holstein (kitaportal-sh.de). From the child's first birthday there is an entitlement to a childcare place. More information is on our page Moving to Kiel.
