Moving in Kiel: mind the resident parking zones from the west bank to Gaarden

Kiel is the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein and lies on the Kiel Firth – a moving destination with its own character. In Kiel, the state capital increasingly regulates parking in the city centre and in residential neighbourhoods via zones. According to the city's information (as of October 2026):

• Long-term parking in resident parking zones is only permitted with a resident parking permit. Without a permit, you may park with a parking disc for up to 4 hours, usually Monday to Friday from 8 am to 8 pm.
• New zones S-1, S-2 and S-3 in Schreventeich: S-3 started on 26 May 2026, S-2 and S-1 apply from 1 August 2026. A rule only applies once all the signs in a zone are in place.
• A loading area (blue sign with a stopping restriction) permits loading and unloading, which must be done quickly without leaving the vehicle unattended.
• In a delivery zone (stopping restriction with the additional sign "Lieferverkehr frei"), only clearly commercial vehicles may stop.

For moving day this means: we check the signage in front of your building in advance and clarify whether a separate parking restriction is needed for the removal van. Whether a removal van may stop in a loading or delivery area is decided solely by the signage there. The city excludes the absolute stopping restriction (traffic sign 283) and the limited stopping restriction (sign 286) from the commercial exemption permit. Anyone moving to Kiel can apply for a resident parking permit in a resident parking zone. The state capital lists the following conditions:

• Anyone whose main residence is in the zone is entitled.
• School pupils, trainees and students can also obtain a permit for a second residence with proof.
• The vehicle must be registered to the person or used permanently by them.
• An identity card and the vehicle registration certificate are required.
• There is no limit per household.

Important: the permit only exempts you from the parking disc requirement in correspondingly signposted areas. There is no entitlement to a free parking space. A business in a zone can apply for an exemption permit for one vehicle, and tradespeople with an exemption permit may park between 6 am and 7 pm.
