Moving to Kiel: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Kiel
Moving to Kiel: the state capital on the fjord
Tips & costs
A move to Kiel takes you to the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein and Germany's northernmost major city. The city curves in a horseshoe around the Kiel Fjord (Kieler Förde); the Kiel Canal begins at Holtenau, and the northernmost district, Schilksee, already lies on the open sea. Kiel is known for Kiel Week, THW Kiel and as a naval base; ferries sail to Scandinavia and the Baltic states. Kiel is divided into 30 districts. For your private move we clarify access and the parking zone in advance.
From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 346 km to Kiel, driving via the A24 and A21. For the lorry we reckon on about 5.5 hours including a break and usually plan the move over two days. In Kiel you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We also handle the reverse route from Kiel to Berlin. Your move to Kiel: what we do
From Moabit to Kiel
We are a Berlin moving company from Moabit and handle moves to Kiel without having a branch there. That is why we clarify access, floor and carrying distances before moving day – for a period building on the western shore of the fjord just as for a house in Schilksee. According to the City of Kiel, long-term parking in residents' parking zones is only permitted with a permit – so we plan a parking restriction in front of the new address for the loading time. You receive a fixed price after a survey; liability is under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. More on our private move.

Part load: move affordably
With a part load (Beiladung) to Kiel you use free load space on a trip heading north. This is worthwhile for a room in a shared flat, single pieces of furniture or boxes that follow later. The delivery date is then a time window – but the price goes down.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Kiel raises many questions: which district suits you, how long may the removal van stand in a residents' parking zone, can you register online and when are appointments available at the citizens' office? This guide explains the division into 30 districts and 18 local areas and summarises what the state capital says about registration and residents' parking. Then there is the journey of around 346 km from Berlin via the A24 and A21. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Kiel
30 districts around the Kiel Fjord
Kiel is divided into 30 districts; one or more of them form each of the 18 local areas (Ortsteile), each with its own local council. The city lies in a horseshoe around the Kiel Fjord: on the western shore are the city centre, Schreventeich and, to the north, Holtenau with the locks of the Kiel Canal; on the eastern shore are the shipyards, among others. In the far north lies Schilksee on the open sea.
Close to the city centre there are many period buildings without a lift, often in residents' parking zones; on the outskirts, housing estates and detached houses predominate. For the move, therefore, the specific address is what counts: we clarify floor, stairwell, parking rules and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private moving service adapts to this.
University, shipyards and Kiel Week
Kiel is home to three higher education institutions: Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität), Kiel University of Applied Sciences and the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design. Economically, the city is shaped by the service sector, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems – Germany's largest shipyard – and the seaport with ferry connections to Scandinavia and the Baltic states. We do not give specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
Kiel is also known for Kiel Week, the handball club THW Kiel, Holstein Kiel and Kiel sprats (Kieler Sprotten). If you are arriving for the start of a semester or a new job, fix your moving day early: the city allocates appointments at the citizens' office up to four weeks in advance. Long distances from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

Registering in Kiel: online service, town hall and appointment booking
After moving in, you register with the state capital of Kiel. The Federal Registration Act (§ 17) requires registration within two weeks of moving in. The City of Kiel offers two ways of doing this.
- Online: on wohnsitzanmeldung.de you register or re-register with your eID, AusweisApp2 and six-digit PIN. According to the city, the registration certificate is sent by post.
- At the town hall: you book appointments via the calendar at terminvergabe.kiel.de. According to the city, new appointments appear every morning from 7:30 am up to four weeks in advance, and cancelled appointments are released again. For questions, the public service number 115 or [email protected] can help. For urgent passport and ID matters, there is a walk-in consultation at the town hall on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 am to 12 noon. A limited number of waiting tickets are issued, so expect to wait.
Have these documents ready: a valid ID card or passport and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeber*innen-Bestätigung). According to the city, a tenancy agreement is not enough. If someone represents you, they need your signed power of attorney and their own ID. For children under 16, Kiel requires proof of custody or consent to the move.
According to the city, it is busier in the mornings and usually quieter in the afternoons. Further information on settling in can be found in the guide to living in Kiel and on the Kiel location page.
Parking in Kiel on moving day: residents' zones and delivery zones
Where your removal van can stand in Kiel depends on the street signs. You should know two of the city's rules, because they take up parking space around moving day.
- Residents' parking: according to the city, long-term parking in residents' parking zones is only permitted with a residents' parking permit. Short-term parking for up to four hours with a parking disc remains open to everyone. The permit is issued to people whose main residence is in the zone. School pupils, trainees and students can also get one for a secondary residence with proof. The permit does not guarantee a parking space.
- Delivery zones: according to the city, these serve shops and their suppliers, for example on Holtenauer Straße, and are marked with a special sign. At night, as signposted, residents may park in them. For questions, the city refers to the civil engineering office (Tiefbauamt) at [email protected].
On the parking pages we checked, the City of Kiel does not describe a specific rule for removal vehicles. A delivery zone is therefore not a reliable parking space for the removal van. Before booking the date, plan with us whether a dedicated parking restriction makes sense for your street, as provided by our parking restriction zone service. If you are moving into a residents' zone, you can only apply for the permit after registering your main residence.
