Arriving in Flensburg: Port City on the Fjord
Life on the Danish Border
Flensburg lies at the inner end of the Flensburg Fjord right on the Danish border and, with 95,568 inhabitants (end of 2025), is Germany's northernmost independent city. As the centre of the Danish minority in Southern Schleswig, the city has a wide range of Danish institutions. It is known for the driving penalty “points in Flensburg” at the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt), Flensburger beer and handball. This guide shows what newcomers take care of in the first weeks.
We have no branch on the fjord; we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). It is around 425 km to Flensburg via the A24, A21 and A7, about six and a half hours by lorry including a break. We plan the home removal at a fixed price after a survey and, on request, reassemble furniture. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Flensburg.

A Predictable Move to Flensburg
A clear price before moving day
For your move to Flensburg, we look at your household goods, floor and access – on site in Berlin or by video call – and then give you a fixed price. Parking restriction, assembly and storage are listed as separate items in the quote. We accept liability for damage under § 451e HGB. Call us on 01625978461.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What we clarify beforehand
Survey Before the Move
We have no location in Schleswig-Holstein; we drive in by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify beforehand what matters on arrival day: the narrow streets and merchants' courtyards of the old town, hillside locations above the fjord, access to a house in Tarup or Engelsby. We apply to the city for the parking restriction outside the new address. For your belongings we accept liability under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of load space; additional insurance is available.

Shared Load to Flensburg
If you are moving to study at the Europa-Universität or the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and are only bringing a few pieces of furniture, you can save with a shared load: your things travel together with other consignments towards Schleswig-Holstein. For this you need some flexibility on the delivery day.

The
first trips to the authorities
After moving into Flensburg, you register within two weeks – at the Bürgerbüro (citizens' office) in the town hall on Rathausplatz or online; according to the city, online registration takes three to five working days. Your landlord confirms that you have moved in with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). After that come nursery or school, the resident parking permit and bulky waste collection from the Technisches Betriebszentrum. You get around by city bus and Regional Express to Hamburg and Kiel. What the city says about this is set out below.

What Newcomers Want to Know: Living in Flensburg
Altstadt, Mürwik, Weiche – the 13 Districts
Flensburg has 13 districts: Altstadt (city centre), Engelsby, Friesischer Berg, Fruerlund, Jürgensby, Mürwik, Neustadt, Nordstadt, Sandberg, Südstadt, Tarup, Weiche and Westliche Höhe. The city extends along the western and southern shores of the fjord. The well-preserved old town stretches from Südermarkt via Holm and Große Straße to Nordermarkt; the station lies on its southern edge.
Mürwik is home to the naval base and the Naval Academy. On the Sandberg, the university of applied sciences and the Europa-Universität share a joint campus. In Fruerlund, by the industrial harbour, stands the Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre. The nearest border crossing into Denmark is in neighbouring Harrislee to the north; the only place in Germany further north is the neighbouring town of Glücksburg.
Work, study and leisure
Major employers are the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the Diakonissenanstalt (DIAKO) with almost 3,500 employees, the Malteser St. Franziskus Hospital and the FSG shipyard in the harbour. Then there is the Flensburger brewery and Danish companies such as Danfoss, which have settled in and around Flensburg for tax reasons. The Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and the Europa-Universität, founded in 1994, have around 9,000 students between them.
In your free time there is the Historic Harbour and Museumsberg, the university's Phänomenta, the Ostseebad beach and SG Flensburg-Handewitt matches. At Christmas market time, the route from Südermarkt via Holm to Nordermarkt turns into the “punch mile” (Punschmeile). Besides German and Danish, you can hear Low German and Petuh in the city. We do not give specific rents without a reliable source; compare offers from housing companies and on portals.
Your move – these costs await you
Whether a small 1-room flat from €344 or a spacious 4-room flat from €1,344 – the costs depend on the scope of your move. A 2-room flat costs from €615, a 3-room flat from €899. For houses and villas we prepare an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €4.25/km. The quickest way to find out your personal price is a free survey.
What affects the costs of your move?
The main cost drivers include the volume of your household goods and the distance, which is charged from €4.25/km. Floor and lift also have an effect – without a lift the effort increases considerably. A parking restriction zone can also be useful. We also offer furniture assembly and a shared load.

Anyone moving into a flat must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in, under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz). In Flensburg, the responsible office is the Bürgerbüro in the town hall: Rathausplatz 1, room 119 (tel. 0461 85-2124, [email protected]). Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the landlord confirmation can only be issued by your landlord or a person they have authorised.

Queue numbers are only issued until one hour before closing. You can book appointments online via buergerbuero.flensburg.de; the city shows current waiting times at monitor-buergerbuero.flensburg.de.
Alternatively, the city offers online residence registration. For this you need:

- the landlord confirmation (template as a PDF on flensburg.de).
You install the AusweisApp, register a service account (BundID or state account), enter your details and upload the confirmation. According to the city, processing takes 3 to 5 working days; you then receive a link to the registration certificate by email and stick the address sticker that arrives by post onto your ID card. Planning tips can be found in the Flensburg moving guide.
Resident Parking and Bulky Waste in Flensburg: Fee, Collection, Recycling Centres
For parking in residential areas, the City of Flensburg cites a resident parking permit at 30.70 euros a year; according to the city, the contact is the Bürgerbüro. The city also points out that the Mobility Master Plan provides for a revision of the resident parking scheme. So check the fee and zones on flensburg.de before applying. For moving day itself, a parking restriction zone can be useful.
For bulky waste, according to the Technisches Betriebszentrum (TBZ): private households can have it collected free of charge after applying, via an online form or in person at the customer centre, Schleswiger Straße 76. If you need an appointment within around 7 to 10 days, you can book a chargeable express service. Alternatively, private households from Flensburg can take bulky waste free of charge to the TBZ recycling centres:
- Schleswiger Straße 95a: Monday to Friday 8 am–5 pm, Saturday 8 am–1 pm,
- Lornsendamm (park-and-ride site): Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8 am–5 pm, Saturday 8 am–1 pm, closed on Wednesdays,
- Kauslundhof business park: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 8 am–5 pm, Saturday 8 am–1 pm, closed on Tuesdays.
Instead of throwing them away, you can also give well-preserved furniture and household items to the “mehrwert” social department store. The TBZ customer centre can be reached on 0461 85-8000.
