Flensburg guide
Moving to Flensburg – your fjord city in the north
Tips and deadlines
Flensburg is Germany's northernmost independent city and lies on the Flensburg Fjord (Flensburger Förde), a few kilometres from the Danish border. The city combines a maritime feel, an old town with merchants' courtyards and short distances to Denmark – attractive for families, students at the Europa-Universität and commuters. Anyone planning a move to Flensburg usually lives more cheaply than in Hamburg or Kiel and has water and nature right on the doorstep. Whether a period flat in the old town, a flat in Mürwik or a new build in Engelsby: we clarify floor, access and parking space before moving day.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 425 km via the A24 towards Hamburg, then via the A21 and A7 to Flensburg; by lorry that takes about six and a half hours including a break. For stopping in front of the building, the city describes a special-use permit (Sondernutzung) from the public order administration, at the latest three weeks in advance – we build this lead time in. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including for the return route to Berlin. The route: Moving Berlin – Flensburg.

Your move to Flensburg: what we do
From Moabit right to your door in Flensburg
We have no branch in Flensburg; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether cobblestones in the old town, an apartment block without a lift in Sandberg or a house in Weiche. We apply to the public order administration (Ordnungsverwaltung) for the special-use permit for the removal van in good time. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible for valuable items.

Your
move, our craft
A move to Flensburg comes with a few northern German peculiarities: narrow historic streets in the old town and many apartment blocks without lifts in Sandberg and Fruerlund. If you are moving on to Denmark, you need no customs papers for household goods within the EU, but you must register there. We advise on registration at the Bürgerbüro and on the route via the A7 or B199. We also take into account demand at the start of the semester at the Europa-Universität when scheduling, so that you arrive in good time before lectures begin.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Flensburg
Flensburg's districts at a glance
Flensburg is divided into varied districts, each with its own character. The old town impresses with historic warehouses, cobblestones and short distances to the fjord – ideal for singles and couples who enjoy urban life. With its Art Nouveau villas and direct views of the fjord, Mürwik is considered one of the most sought-after residential areas in the city, while Jürgensby, with green residential streets and good infrastructure, is particularly popular with families.
If you are looking for cheaper housing, Weiche or Engelsby offer attractive new developments with good links to the university. Sandberg and Neustadt score with their central location and short distances to the main station, but are more densely built up. For your move to Flensburg, we clarify the floor, access and parking space at the new address in advance.
Housing market, employers and quality of life
The housing market in Flensburg is still moderate compared with Hamburg or Kiel: sought-after neighbourhoods such as Mürwik are higher, outlying areas lower. Important employers shaping the job market include the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt), the Flensburger brewery, Danish companies such as Danfoss south of the border and numerous maritime businesses. The Europa-Universität Flensburg and Flensburg University of Applied Sciences also attract thousands of students to the city every year, giving it a young, international atmosphere.
The quality of life in Flensburg is convincing thanks to its unique location on the fjord, numerous sailing and water sports opportunities and its proximity to Denmark for day trips or shopping. Short distances, a relaxed northern German way of life and good medical and school infrastructure make the city particularly attractive for families. If you are looking for a fresh start, professionally or privately, Flensburg is a manageable yet lively city with high residential satisfaction.

What makes a move more or less expensive?
A large volume means more effort and therefore higher costs. The distance, which we charge from €4.20/km, as well as the floor and a lift also noticeably affect the price. A parking restriction zone ensures smooth operations but costs extra. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load can be added at any time.

Parking restrictions and special use in Flensburg: public order administration, deadlines and parking
We could not find a dedicated page for moving-day parking restrictions on flensburg.de. For the use of public roads beyond normal public use, the city describes the special-use permit (Sondernutzung): it is only granted on application, which must be submitted at the latest three weeks before the planned use. Fees are based on the special-use fee bylaw (Sondernutzungsgebührensatzung); the page does not give amounts. There is an online form "Antrag Sondernutzung der öffentlichen Straße" (application for special use of a public road). Check in advance with the public order administration whether your move falls under this (Schleswiger Straße 66, 24941 Flensburg, telephone 0461 85-3232, [email protected]).
On parking: according to the city, the Bürgerbüro in the town hall (Rathausplatz 1) is the point of contact for parking permits; the residents' parking permit currently costs €30.70 a year. As part of its parking concept, the city surveyed residents; in the old town, many respondents feel there are too few public parking spaces. So expect space to be tight in the old town on moving day, plan a reserved area for the van and ask your future neighbours in good time whether vehicles need to be moved.
We clarify these questions with you and support you with the parking restriction zone. The guide Applying for a parking restriction zone gives tips on the process; our page Removal company Flensburg shows how we plan moves to Flensburg.
Registration, bulky waste and traffic updates in Flensburg after the move
You register at the Bürgerbüro (Rathausplatz 1, room 119). You can book appointments online or by phone on 0461 85-2124; there is also an open consultation without an appointment. According to the city, the following times apply: Mondays and Wednesdays 7:30 am to 1:00 pm, Tuesdays 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, Thursdays 7:30 am to 5:30 pm and Fridays 7:30 am to 12:00 noon. The city provides the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) as a download for your landlord. The registration deadline is two weeks after moving in (§ 17 Federal Registration Act).
Register old furniture for collection with TBZ Flensburg. According to TBZ, it collects bulky household items from private households free of charge after an application; you apply online or at the customer centre (Schleswiger Straße 76, telephone 0461 85-8000). If you need an appointment within 7 to 10 days, you can use the chargeable express service. Choose your preferred date so that the bulky waste collection does not clash with your moving day and access for the removal van stays clear.
TBZ publishes current closures and roadworks in its traffic ticker (Verkehrsticker); check it shortly before the move. You can read more about everyday life in the fjord city in the guide Living in Flensburg.
