Norderstedt guide
Norderstedt: a town of four centres on Hamburg's doorstep
Areas, offices, daily life
As the fourth-largest town in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg's direct neighbour, Norderstedt attracts many commuters and families. The town was formed on 1 January 1970 from the municipalities of Garstedt, Glashütte, Harksheide and Friedrichsgabe; today Norderstedt-Mitte has been added. Whether it is a new-build flat near the Stadtpark or a terraced house in Harksheide – we plan your private move at a fixed price after a survey. Call us on 01625978461 and receive a non-binding quote for your move to Norderstedt.
Norderstedt combines proximity to Hamburg with greener surroundings. We are based in Berlin, which is around 295 km away via the A24 – the route is described on our page Long-distance move Berlin – Norderstedt. On request, we organise the parking restriction zone at the loading and destination addresses and take care of boxes and furniture assembly. This way your move is completed on schedule; your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB.

What we clarify before moving day in Norderstedt
Access, parking, date
Norderstedt does not have a single centre but several local centres – from the Herold-Center in Garstedt to Norderstedt-Mitte with its underground and AKN stations. Before the move, we therefore clarify access, the carrying route and whether a no-parking zone is needed. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³). For moves beyond the town boundary, we plan long-distance moves with the same care.

Frequently asked questions about living in Norderstedt
The districts of Norderstedt
Norderstedt was formed in 1970 from the four municipalities of Garstedt, Glashütte, Harksheide and Friedrichsgabe; today Norderstedt-Mitte has been added. Garstedt borders on Hamburg and has the Herold-Center shopping centre and Garstedt underground station. Harksheide is home to the Stadtpark with its lake and arboretum. Norderstedt-Mitte is the terminus of the U1 and the interchange with the AKN.
Friedrichsgabe in the north is home to companies such as Jungheinrich; Glashütte in the east is characterised more by detached houses. When choosing a district, you should consider transport links and surroundings when choosing your flat. We plan your private move with suitable vehicle and staff planning.
Living, working and leisure in Norderstedt
The housing market in Norderstedt is in demand, and many Hamburg commuters look here. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures; compare offers on the usual portals. Local employers include Jungheinrich (in Friedrichsgabe since 1966) and Hummel-Küchen; many residents also commute to Hamburg.
For leisure there is the Stadtpark Norderstedt with a water-ski facility and arboretum, the site of the 2011 State Garden Show, and the Herold-Center for shopping. With the U1 and AKN, the town can be reached without a car. We are based in Berlin and operate nationwide – further destinations can be found in the locations overview.

Moving to Norderstedt: four local centres, transport links and parking
Norderstedt is not a town with a single centre. According to the town, it was formed on 1 January 1970 from Friedrichsgabe and Garstedt (previously in the district of Pinneberg) and Glashütte and Harksheide (previously in the district of Stormarn). The town covers 5,810 hectares, about two thirds of which are woodland, green, sports and agricultural land. At the end of 2023, the town had 84,119 inhabitants. For your move this means: check early which of the five districts – Garstedt, Harksheide, Glashütte, Friedrichsgabe or Norderstedt-Mitte – your address is in, and plan the journey accordingly.
For transport links, the town names the A7, the proximity to Hamburg Airport and, since 1996, the connection to Hamburg's rapid transit network by underground and the AKN. You can read more about the Hamburg side in our guide Moving to Hamburg.
On parking, the town publishes the following key facts:
- A residents' parking permit costs 20 euros per permit and is valid for one year from the date of issue.
- In Garstedt, the ticket machines charge 0.50 euros per 30 minutes.
- The traffic supervision office (Verkehrsaufsicht) in the town hall (Rathausallee 50, email [email protected]) is responsible for residents' parking permits and special use.
Under § 45 StVO, a no-parking zone is ordered by the road traffic authority; we do not state the lead time and fee because we could not verify them on the town's pages. Our offer for this: Parking restriction zone. More about moves to the town: Moves to Norderstedt.
Re-registering in Norderstedt: registration office, appointment and online portal
Under § 17 (1) BMG, you register within two weeks of moving in. In Norderstedt there are two ways to do this.
- Online: the town's online portal offers registrations and changes of address. According to the town, the service is free of charge and possible without visiting the office; you receive a digital registration confirmation and should then update your identity card, passport or eID card.
- In person: the residents' registration office (Bürgerservice und Einwohnerwesen) is at Rathausallee 50, 22846 Norderstedt. According to the town, you need an appointment for all matters, which you can make online, by phone (040 535 95-445) or by email to [email protected].
The town provides the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) as a PDF form; under § 19 BMG, it may only be issued by the housing provider or a person commissioned by them. There is also a power of attorney form for registration by a representative. If you need a new passport photo, the town hall takes digital photos for 6.00 euros (payment at the counter by debit card or cash).
If you are coming from the Hamburg area or from further away, you can dovetail the move and re-registration well: book the appointment first, then set the moving date. For shorter distances, our local move is suitable.
