Karlsruhe for New Residents
Karlsruhe: Fan City, Residence of Law and KIT
Settling in, not just moving
With a good 309,000 inhabitants, Karlsruhe is the third-largest city in Baden-Württemberg. It was founded from Durlach in 1715 as a planned baroque city: 32 streets radiate from the palace into the city and the Hardtwald forest – hence the nickname Fan City (Fächerstadt). The Federal Court of Justice has been based here since 1950 and the Federal Constitutional Court since 1951, which is why Karlsruhe is also called the “Residence of Law”. Of the city's nine higher education institutions, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is the oldest and largest. The city is also the regional centre for parts of the Southern Palatinate and northern Alsace. The Rhine forms the border with the Palatinate; the entire city area lies on the right bank of the Rhine, and in the east, with the Turmberg, it already reaches the edge of the hill country.
For newcomers, the first tasks are registration, flat-hunting and sorting out the commute. According to Wikipedia, the city centre can be reached from most districts by tram or light rail without changing; since the Kombilösung project, trains have run beneath the Kaiserstraße. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Karlsruhe. The route from Berlin – around 676 km via the A9, A4 and A5, planned with a buffer because of driving-time rules – is described on our page Moving Berlin – Karlsruhe. We also handle the opposite direction.

Moving to Karlsruhe: Request a Fixed Price After a Survey
After a survey, liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB)
Whether you are moving to Karlsruhe from Stuttgart, Mannheim or Berlin: we plan the route, access and – where necessary – a parking restriction zone; more on this on our page Long-distance moves. After the survey we give you a binding fixed price. Call us on 01625978461 – ideally with some notice if you are moving at the start of the semester at KIT or at the end of the month. On request we include packing materials and furniture assembly in the fixed price.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Karlsruhe
Route, access, old buildings
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Karlsruhe business. That is why we ask detailed questions before moving day: is the flat in the city centre with its pedestrian zone and trams, in a Wilhelminian-era building in the Südstadt or in Durlach? Is there a lift, is a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) needed? Over around 676 km we plan the journey with rest breaks for driving-time rules. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give you the price after the survey as a fixed price.

Karlsruhe
for Newcomers
A move to Karlsruhe raises some questions typical of the city: the city centre follows the fan-shaped layout, the Kaiserstraße is a pedestrian zone, and demand for flats around the universities is high. If you are moving to the city centre, the Weststadt or Mühlburg, you should clarify space for the removal van early. For daily life it is worth checking the KVV lines to your new address. On request we take care of the parking restriction zone, furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet free – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Karlsruhe
27 Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Karlsruhe
Karlsruhe is divided into 27 districts: eight inner and 19 outer. The outer districts mostly go back to former towns and villages, such as Durlach with the Turmberg and the Turmbergbahn funicular, Mühlburg, Knielingen (first mentioned in 786), Rüppurr or Neureut. The exceptions are the new 20th-century housing estates: Oberreut, the Waldstadt and Weiherfeld-Dammerstock.
The city centre north of the Kaiserstraße still follows the fan-shaped layout; the Südstadt and Südweststadt were built in the second half of the 19th century and have a different street grid. Where you live determines your tram or light rail line, carrying distance and parking on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Karlsruhe
According to Wikipedia, companies with their headquarters in Karlsruhe include dm-drogerie markt and EnBW; United Internet (1&1, Web.de, GMX) operates a large data centre, and Michelin has its German headquarters and a tyre plant here. There are also banks such as LBBW and L-Bank, the federal courts and KIT. You can study at KIT, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, the State University of Arts and Design and other institutions.
For leisure there is the palace garden with its miniature railway, the ZKM – Center for Art and Media, the Baden State Theatre, the Turmberg in Durlach and the Rhine harbour, from which the MS Karlsruhe sails to Strasbourg and Speyer. Around a third of the city area consists of landscape protection areas. We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source.
Useful for daily life: all public transport runs on standard KVV fares or the bwtarif. Bicycles are available from the Fächerrad hire scheme. And if you are planning appointments at the registration office, you will find opening hours and online services in the city's citizen services.
What a Move to Karlsruhe Costs
We believe in clarity instead of small print. That is why: 1-room moves from €365, 2-room moves from €615, 3-room moves from €884, 4-room moves from €1,344. A house or villa can hardly be priced at a flat rate, which is why you receive an individual quote here. For a long-distance move we charge from €4.25 per kilometre driven. Your exact price is fixed after a free survey.

Registering in Karlsruhe: Deadline and Documents Under the Federal Registration Act
Anyone moving to Karlsruhe must register with the city's residents' registration office. The deadline comes from the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz): under § 17 you must register within two weeks of moving in. Anyone moving out without moving into a new flat in Germany deregisters within two weeks; this is possible up to one week before moving out.
Registration requires the landlord's confirmation under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act. It contains the landlord's name and address, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the people required to register. Only the landlord or a person they have authorised may issue it. If they refuse or do not issue it in time, you must inform the registration authority without delay.
- Children under 16 are registered by the person into whose flat they move.
- Check appointments, opening hours and the online services of the Karlsruhe registration authority in the City of Karlsruhe's citizen services before planning your appointment.
- Ask your landlord for the landlord confirmation before your moving date so that you meet the deadline, and book an appointment as soon as the City of Karlsruhe offers one.
- Adults who have a legal guardian who determines their place of residence are also registered by that guardian.
In our Karlsruhe guide we show you how to coordinate your moving date and visits to the authorities sensibly.
Getting Around Karlsruhe: KVV, Light Rail and Trams in Daily Life
Public transport in Karlsruhe is run by the Karlsruhe Transport Association (KVV), which according to its own information covers rail and bus services in the Karlsruhe region. The network includes S-Bahn lines such as S1, S2, S4, S5, S7, S8, S11, S51 and S52 as well as tram lines 1, 2, 4 and 5. The journey planner on kvv.de shows which line serves your new address.
The KVV offers, among other things, the Deutschlandticket for unlimited journeys on local transport, single and season tickets for adults, seniors, commuters, pupils and students, a cyclist ticket and company tickets. In the KVV.regiomove app you can check in and out with Swipe2Go instead of choosing a ticket in advance. Tickets are available at sales outlets and in the KVV web shops. According to the KVV, from 1 January 2027 the KVV fare will also apply in the area of the Pforzheim-Enzkreis transport association.
For your move this means: before moving in, check which stops and lines serve your new address, and work out whether a Deutschlandticket or a season ticket suits your daily routine. On moving day itself the removal van needs space in front of the building; our page on the parking restriction zone explains how to arrange this.
