Moving to Heilbronn: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Heilbronn
Moving to Heilbronn: Käthchen's town on the Neckar
Tips & costs
A move to Heilbronn takes you to Baden-Württemberg's seventh-largest city, on the Neckar about 50 kilometres north of Stuttgart. The former imperial city is known as a city of wine and as the “Käthchenstadt” – after Kleist's play “Käthchen von Heilbronn”. The old town was almost completely destroyed in the air raid of 4 December 1944 and rebuilt in the 1950s; on top of that come eight incorporated districts, from Böckingen to Kirchhausen. For your private move we clarify access, floor and parking zone in advance.
From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 591 km to Heilbronn, driven via the A9 and the A6. For the lorry we allow about 8.5 hours including a break and usually plan the move over two days. In Heilbronn you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We also handle the reverse route from Heilbronn to Berlin. Further information: Moving Berlin – Heilbronn.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Heilbronn
Town centre and eight districts: Heilbronn at a glance
Besides the town centre, Heilbronn includes eight incorporated districts: Böckingen (since 1933, by far the largest), Neckargartach and Sontheim (both 1938), Klingenberg (1970), Kirchhausen (1972) and Biberach, Frankenbach and Horkheim (1974). In the north, the city has grown together with Neckarsulm into one continuous built-up area.
The town centre dates mainly from the reconstruction period of the 1950s, with blocks of flats and shopping streets. In the districts, besides housing estates, there are also old village centres and detached houses. For the move, the specific address matters: we clarify floor, stairwell, residents' parking zone and space for the lorry during the survey. Our private move service adapts to this.
Education campus, wine and the Unterland
Heilbronn is an urban district and at the same time the seat of the district of Heilbronn, the regional centre of the Heilbronn-Franken region and part of the outer zone of the Stuttgart metropolitan region. Since 2010 the Dieter Schwarz Foundation's education campus (Bildungscampus) has been growing in the town centre; in 2022 around 6,500 people were studying there at five higher education institutions. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
Because of its many vineyards, Heilbronn is regarded as a city of wine; the area is called the Unterland. If you are arriving at the start of a semester or a new job, you should set the moving day early: according to the city, you need an appointment for the Central Citizens' Office, and new residents' parking zones apply from 2027. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.
How much does a move cost? The key figures
Many customers ask themselves: how much will my move cost? The answer depends on the size. 4-room flats start from €1,309, 3-room flats from €879. Smaller moves are cheaper: 2 rooms from €605 and 1 room from just €375. Larger properties such as houses or villas always receive an individual quote. For a long-distance move we charge from €3.95 per kilometre. The quickest way to find out your exact price is a free survey.
What does my move really cost?
Several factors count for a realistic cost estimate: the volume of your household goods, the distance to be covered (from €3.95/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. Sometimes a parking restriction zone is also needed for the transport to run smoothly. Furniture assembly and part loads also affect the final price.

Re-registration and residents' parking in Heilbronn: what counts when you move in
Anyone moving to Heilbronn must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in under § 17 (1) of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz). In the town centre, the Central Citizens' Office in the Town Hall (Zentrales Bürgeramt im Rathaus) is responsible: Marktplatz 7 (entrance Lohtorstraße), ground floor, 74072 Heilbronn. According to the city of Heilbronn, it handles registration matters such as registering, re-registering and deregistering, and service is only available by prior appointment. You book the appointment via the city's online booking system or by telephone on 07131 56-3800.
Important for anyone moving into the town centre or a district with a residents' parking zone: according to the city, a new regulation on residents' parking permits has applied in Heilbronn since 1 July 2026. The town-centre zones are being renumbered 101 to 117, and the signage will be adapted by the end of 2026. From 1 January 2027 the annual fee will be a uniform €120 instead of the previous €30.70. Which street belongs to which zone is shown on the zone maps on the city's “Bewohnerparken” (residents' parking) page; according to the city, the signs on site are decisive.
Plan the parking restriction zone for moving day early and coordinate it with the local parking rules of your new street so that the removal van can stop right outside the door.
Citizens' offices in Heilbronn's districts: where to register locally
In addition to the Central Citizens' Office in the Town Hall, the city of Heilbronn runs citizens' offices in the districts of Biberach, Böckingen, Frankenbach, Horkheim, Kirchhausen, Neckargartach and Sontheim. If you are moving to Sontheim, for example, you will find the citizens' office at Hauptstraße 7, 74081 Heilbronn; according to the city, the Ackermann stop is served by bus routes 31, 32, 33 and 41. According to the city, this citizens' office's services include registration matters and parking permits for residents. Opening hours and appointment rules differ from office to office. Check them before your visit on the city's relevant page or ask by telephone (Sontheim: 07131 58915-0).
To register, you need the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the landlord is obliged to cooperate with the registration; if you do not receive the confirmation in time, you must inform the registration authority without delay. Ask your landlord for it before you move in, therefore, so that you do not have to submit anything later at the appointment. Also note down the telephone number of the responsible citizens' office in case something shifts on moving day and you need to rebook the appointment.
