Moving to Heidelberg: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Heidelberg
Moving to Heidelberg: the Neckar, the old town and 15 districts
Planning from Berlin
A move to Heidelberg takes you to the Neckar, exactly where the river leaves the Odenwald and enters the Upper Rhine Plain. Baden-Württemberg's fifth-largest city is known for its old town, the castle ruins and Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, the oldest university in present-day Germany. The old town in particular is demanding for moves: the lorry may only enter the pedestrian zone with a permit. For your private move we clarify access, loading time and floor in advance.
The route is easy to plan: around 629 km via the A9, A4 and A5, about 9 hours by lorry including a break. We load in Berlin, drive to Heidelberg and reassemble everything there – usually over two days, depending on volume. In Heidelberg you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). You receive the fixed price after the survey; background on the route can be found under Moving Berlin – Heidelberg.

Moving to Heidelberg: arrange a survey
629 km, one contact person, one fixed price
For your move to Heidelberg, one call on 01625978461 is enough: we survey your flat by video or on site, ask about the floor and access at the destination and calculate the 629 km route. You then receive a written fixed price in which parking restriction, assembly or storage are listed as separate items.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Heidelberg works with us
629 km, one team, one fixed price
Our team sets off from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin – we have no base in Heidelberg itself. That is why we plan all the more carefully beforehand: floor, lift, carrying route and parking space, for example for a period building in the Weststadt or a flat in the old town pedestrian zone. According to the city, the lorry needs an exemption permit for the old town pedestrian zone, and elsewhere a parking restriction from the Office for Mobility (Amt für Mobilität) – the signs must be in place 72 hours beforehand. After the survey you receive a fixed price; liability for your belongings is governed by § 451e HGB (€620 per cubic metre). Details of the private move can be found here.

Moving
& transport from one provider
A move to Heidelberg raises many questions: which district suits you, may the lorry enter the old town, when must the parking restriction be in place and do you need an appointment at the citizens' office? This guide presents the 15 districts, from the old town via Neuenheim and Handschuhsheim to the Bahnstadt, and sums up what the city says about the pedestrian zone, parking restrictions and loading zones. On top of that comes the journey of around 629 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Heidelberg
Heidelberg's 15 districts
Heidelberg is divided into 15 districts and 47 urban wards: Altstadt, Bergheim, Weststadt, Südstadt, Bahnstadt, Rohrbach, Kirchheim, Pfaffengrund, Wieblingen, Neuenheim, Handschuhsheim, Ziegelhausen, Schlierbach, Boxberg and Emmertsgrund. Seven of them were separate villages that were incorporated by 1975 – Neuenheim being the first, in 1891.
North of the Neckar lie Neuenheim, with the campus in the Neuenheimer Feld, and Handschuhsheim. The old town, with its pedestrian zone and narrow lanes, requires a permit for the lorry; Bergheim and the Weststadt are characterised by period buildings, and the Bahnstadt on the former goods station is a new passive-house quarter. For the move, the specific address matters – we clarify access, floor and loading zone during the survey. Our private move service adapts to this.
University, castle ruins and Rhine-Neckar
Heidelberg is an urban district and the seat of the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis; together with Mannheim and Ludwigshafen it forms the core of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Ruprecht-Karls-Universität shapes the city – with buildings in the old town and the new campus in the Neuenheimer Feld. Accordingly, many people move here at the start of the semester. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
The former residence city of the Electoral Palatinate attracts visitors from all over the world, above all to the old town with the castle ruins above the Neckar. For your move this means: according to the city, delivery traffic in the pedestrian zone is only permitted on working days from 6 to 11 am; otherwise a permit is required. Plan your moving day early, therefore. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.
What your move really costs
- 1 room: from €339
- 2 rooms: from €589
- 3 rooms: from €915
- 4 rooms: from €1,344
- House/villa: individual quote
- Long-distance move: from €4.25/km
Unsure what to expect? Arrange a free survey – free of charge and without obligation.
How is the moving price calculated?
The moving price is calculated primarily from the volume and the distance (from €4.25/km). Other factors are the floor, whether there is a lift, and any parking restriction zone that may be needed. Additional services such as furniture assembly and part loads round off the offer.

Old town move in Heidelberg: pedestrian zone and loading times
In Heidelberg's old town, the pedestrian zone determines the planning. According to the city of Heidelberg, access is only permitted with an exemption permit under § 46 StVO, including where there are bollards. Loading and unloading (delivery traffic) is possible on working days from 6 to 11 am; outside these times you need a permit.
- Deadline: the application must be submitted at least two weeks before the planned entry.
- Details: location, date, time window, registration number and billing address; the form is available online.
- Fee: for one to five days the city states €10.
- Restrictions: no permits are issued for Sundays and public holidays; the permit must be clearly visible in the vehicle.
The city's page does not explicitly mention removal vans. Therefore, check in advance with the Office for Mobility ([email protected], telephone 06221 58-30500) whether the rule applies to your move. The city also points out that loading and unloading is possible in a limited no-stopping zone and in designated loading areas. The city lists the loading zones by district, including Altstadt, Bergheim, Neuenheim and Weststadt, on its “Ladebereiche” (loading areas) page.
How we plan tight city-centre locations is explained under Parking restriction zone.
Parking restriction and re-registration in Heidelberg
For moves outside the pedestrian zone, the city of Heidelberg describes the procedure “Vorübergehendes Haltverbot einrichten” (setting up a temporary parking restriction). Under it, you can apply for a parking restriction for the duration of the move, in person or informally in writing, at the Office for Mobility. The application states your name, old and new address, telephone number, purpose, date, period, the area with street and house number, and the length of the zone, which usually corresponds to the length of the removal van. The signs must be in place at least 72 hours (three days) before the moving date. The fee is based on the local scale of charges; the page does not give an amount.
After moving in, you must register within two weeks (§ 17 Federal Registration Act, BMG). Heidelberg has ten citizens' offices (Bürgerämter), including in Altstadt, Handschuhsheim, Neuenheim, Rohrbach and Mitte (responsible for Bahnstadt, Bergheim, Südstadt and Weststadt). According to the city, personal visits are only possible by appointment at termin.heidelberg.de or by telephone on 5813333; for individual cases there is the “Bürgeramt Virtuell” by video call.
Heidelberg is divided into 15 districts. With its Wilhelminian residential architecture, the Weststadt is regarded as a testimony to urban planning in the imperial era; the Bahnstadt is the youngest district. More about the city: Moving company Heidelberg and the guide for newcomers.
