Pforzheim: 15 districts between the Enz Nagold and Würm

Pforzheim is divided into 15 districts: Au, Brötzingen, Buckenberg, Büchenbronn, Dillweißenstein, Eutingen, Hohenwart, Huchenfeld, Innenstadt, Nordstadt, Oststadt, Südoststadt, Südweststadt, Weststadt and Würm. The Innenstadt (city centre), with its shopping streets and the Reuchlinhaus, was largely rebuilt after the Second World War. Brötzingen in the west lies on the Enz and has many older residential buildings; the Weststadt and Nordstadt border directly on the centre.

On the heights at the edge of the Black Forest lie Büchenbronn, Hohenwart and Huchenfeld – green and quiet, but with slopes that need to be planned for when moving. Würm lies in the valley of the same name, Eutingen in the east on the Enz. Which district suits you depends mainly on where you work and the bus connections.

The jewellery and watch industry still shapes Pforzheim today, for example with Wellendorff or the Laco watch manufactory. Alongside them are industrial companies such as the Witzenmann Group, Mahle Behr, Stöber Antriebstechnik and Doduco. Pforzheim University – the university of design, engineering, business and law – has around 6,000 students. The A8 runs north of the city between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, with four junctions. The city does not require any special documents; the application can be made informally in person or in writing, and there is also an online form "Application for setting up a no-stopping zone (temporary)". In it, state:

• name, old and new address and phone number
• purpose (move), date and period
• the exact location, ideally with street and house number, if necessary with a sketch
• the length of the zone, which usually depends on the removal vehicle

According to the service portal, the fee varies from city to city; the page does not give an amount, so ask the city. The signs are put up by the road maintenance service of the roads authority or by an approved company, such as a moving company. The legal basis is § 45 StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations), and an objection is possible if the application is refused. After moving in, you register in Pforzheim at the city administration's Bürgercentrum, according to the service portal "within 2 weeks of moving into the new home". You book an appointment via the city's Virtual Office; in most cases you must appear in person. Electronic residence registration is being introduced gradually in Baden-Württemberg; check on wohnsitzanmeldung.de whether Pforzheim offers it. Registration costs nothing. Plan it for the first few days after moving in so that the deadline does not get tight.

Bring with you:

• at least one proof of identity, usually an identity card and/or passport
• the landlord's confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
• for children without a child's passport, the birth certificate
• a power of attorney if you send someone else
