The quote covers the journey, floors, carrying distances and additional services such as a packing service, a small-load transport or a part-load. We clarify with you before the date whether a parking restriction zone or access to the pedestrian zone is needed in Heidelberg.

Heidelberg FAQ: parking restrictions, old town, registration

Your questions about moving in Heidelberg

Answers on parking restrictions, loading times in the old town, bulky waste and registration in Heidelberg – with references to the city's information.

In all 15 districts, from the old town via Bergheim, Weststadt and Neuenheim to Ziegelhausen, Rohrbach or the Bahnstadt. Our team comes from Berlin; we clarify access and parking based on your address before the date.

How a move in Heidelberg works

A move in Heidelberg needs planning: the old town with its narrow lanes around Hauptstraße and the castle, the hillside locations on the Königstuhl and in Ziegelhausen, and the dense development in Bergheim and the Weststadt leave little room for the removal van. Praktik Transport und Umzüge comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handles moves in the university city on the Neckar; that is why we clarify access and parking space before the date.

The process begins with a survey by video or as agreed, during which we check access, parking and floors. You then receive a fixed-price quote for your private move. Many buildings in the historic old town have no lift; we therefore take stairwells and narrow entrances into account when planning staff.

Heidelberg lies on the A5 between Frankfurt and Karlsruhe; the A656 leads to Mannheim. In the Neckar valley, the B37 runs along the south side through Schlierbach, while Ziegelhausen lies on the other bank – this matters for the approach and parking space.

Our process includes:

  • Survey and advice
  • Fixed-price quote with no hidden costs
  • Professional packing of household goods and furniture
  • The team travels from Berlin, plus transport
  • Furniture assembly and set-up at the destination
  • Checking whether a parking restriction zone is needed

We go through one-way streets, the pedestrian zone and parking rules with you beforehand so that no additional costs arise on moving day.

15 districts: residential areas for your move in Heidelberg

Heidelberg is divided into 15 districts, which differ markedly in building style, accessibility and type of housing. We take this diversity into account individually for every move in Heidelberg.

The Altstadt (old town) is characterised by narrow historic lanes, cobblestones and little parking space for vehicles – here a parking restriction zone applied for in good time is particularly important. In Bergheim and the Weststadt, Gründerzeit buildings with high-ceilinged period flats dominate, while the Südstadt and Rohrbach offer quieter, family-friendly residential areas. Kirchheim and Pfaffengrund in the west offer housing estates with comparatively wide streets.

On the Neckar you will find Wieblingen, Neuenheim and Handschuhsheim – the latter two are particularly popular as university quarters with students and academics of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität. Those who prefer greener surroundings move to Ziegelhausen or Schlierbach, where detached houses and hillside locations shape everyday life. The younger districts of Boxberg and Emmertsgrund lie on higher ground on the edge of the city and consist mainly of residential blocks, while the Bahnstadt, on the former goods and marshalling yard, attracts companies and young families as a new-build district built to passive-house standard.

  • Altstadt – historic buildings, narrow access roads
  • Bergheim & Weststadt – period flats, central location
  • Neuenheim & Handschuhsheim – close to the university
  • Kirchheim & Pfaffengrund – modern estates, close to the motorway
  • Ziegelhausen & Schlierbach – quiet residential areas on the Neckar
  • Bahnstadt – new-build quarter with company headquarters

We also plan moves beyond the city limits, for example to Mannheim via the A656 or to Karlsruhe via the A5.

Moving costs in Heidelberg: transparent prices

Moving costs in Heidelberg depend on the size of your home, the floor, the distance and additional services. As a Berlin moving company working in Heidelberg, we calculate transparently and without hidden fees – from a small student pad in Neuenheim to a detached house in Ziegelhausen.

The following overview gives you an initial guide for your private move within Heidelberg or into the region:

Type of movePrice from
1-room flatfrom €365
2-room flatfrom €589
3-room flatfrom €884
Long-distance move (per km)from €4.20/km
Parking restriction zone (per day)€30–100

The actual costs vary depending on accessibility – a move out of an old-town building without a lift on Hauptstraße takes more time than a ground-level move in Kirchheim. Additional services such as house clearance, piano transport or a part-load for smaller volumes also affect the final price.

The following factors have a major influence on costs in Heidelberg:

  • Living space and number of rooms
  • Floor and whether there is a lift
  • Distance between the old and new home
  • Access options, especially in the old town
  • Need for a parking restriction zone and the parking situation
  • Additional services such as packing material or furniture assembly

On request, you receive a non-binding fixed-price quote that includes all services and the journey from Berlin – so your moving costs in Heidelberg remain predictable from the outset.

Parking restriction zones and parking when moving in Heidelberg

Anyone moving in Heidelberg's old town, in Bergheim or in the Weststadt knows the problem: narrow streets, little parking space and many residents. A parking restriction zone applied for in good time therefore often makes sense, so that loading and unloading can be done without time pressure and without conflicts with other road users.

According to the city, the Office for Mobility is responsible; you can submit the application informally, in person or online. The signs must be in place at least 72 hours before the move. We clarify during the survey whether a zone is needed outside your front door – for example in the old town, in Neuenheim or around Bismarckplatz.

Our price list states €30 to €100 per day for a parking restriction zone, depending on location and duration. Details can be found on our parking restriction zone page.

Typical parking challenges in Heidelberg are:

  • Narrow one-way streets in the old town
  • High occupancy due to students and tourists
  • Pedestrian zones around Hauptstraße and Marktplatz
  • Gradients and hillside locations in Schlierbach or Ziegelhausen
  • Limited residents' parking in Bergheim and the Weststadt

The closer the removal van is to the front door, the shorter the carrying distances through narrow lanes and up steep stairs. So tell us the street, house number and preferred date when you enquire; we will then tell you which deadlines you should allow for.

From Heidelberg to the region – and to Berlin

Heidelberg lies in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. The A5 connects the city with Frankfurt and Karlsruhe, the A656 with Mannheim; the B37 runs through the Neckar valley. This network makes it possible to plan moves into the region and beyond.

Between Heidelberg and our location in Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit there are around 629 road kilometres, mainly via the A9, A4 and A5; by lorry this takes about nine hours including the mandatory break. For moves over long distances, our price list states from €4.20 per kilometre; you receive the binding price as a fixed price after the survey.

Within Baden-Württemberg, we also handle moves to Stuttgart, Ulm, Heilbronn, Pforzheim, Reutlingen, Freiburg im Breisgau and Ludwigsburg. The A656 leads directly to Mannheim.

For smaller volumes, such as individual pieces of furniture or the contents of a room in a shared flat, we offer a part-load, in which your goods are combined with other consignments.

  • Moves between Heidelberg and Berlin in both directions
  • Price per kilometre according to our price list from €4.20/km
  • Connection via the A5 and A656
  • Part-load for smaller volumes
  • One fixed contact person in Berlin

We agree the loading time in Heidelberg and arrival at the destination with you in advance.

Student moves in Heidelberg & easy booking

As the seat of Germany's oldest university, the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, Heidelberg is one of the cities with a particularly high density of students. Moving between shared-flat rooms in Neuenheim, Handschuhsheim or the Weststadt is part of everyday life here – and that is exactly what our special student move in Heidelberg is for.

Our offer is aimed at small volumes, narrow stairwells in period buildings and tight budgets. With our student move package, you get a fair fixed price, a date arranged around the change of semester and active help carrying furniture, boxes and bicycles.

The booking process is deliberately kept simple:

  • Send an enquiry online or by phone
  • Brief details of room size, floor and access
  • Receive a fixed-price quote
  • Confirm your preferred date – with some notice because of the journey from Berlin
  • Have the move carried out – including transport and assembly

For larger moves, such as from student life into your first flat of your own, we support you with our regular private move service. For small things such as individual boxes or a shelf, a low-cost part-load is often enough. If you leave furniture and rubbish behind when moving out, you can also book our house clearance.

Booking a move in Heidelberg with us always follows the same transparent principle: non-binding enquiry, personal advice, binding fixed-price quote and a fixed moving date. This way students, families and businesses in Heidelberg keep full control of costs at all times and can rely on a smooth process.

Setting up a parking restriction in Heidelberg: Office for Mobility, deadlines and signs

On application, the city sets up a parking restriction zone for the removal van outside your front door. According to the City of Heidelberg, the Office for Mobility (Amt für Mobilität) is responsible. You can submit the application in person, informally in writing or via an online form from the city. You must state your name, old and new address, phone number, purpose, start, period and area, ideally with street and house number; the length is usually based on the removal vehicle.

  • According to the city, the signs must be in place at least 72 hours before the moving date.
  • They may be put up by the municipal works depot or road maintenance office, or by a qualified specialist company such as a moving company; proof is provided on request.
  • The procedure description does not state a fee; it is based on the city's current schedule of fees.

Without a permit, you may not reserve parking spaces with bins or similar items; others do not have to respect such a reservation. If vehicles are parked in the zone on moving day despite the signs, they can be towed away, with the costs borne by the vehicle owners. Contact: City of Heidelberg, Marktplatz 10, phone 06221 58-10580, [email protected]. In areas with a restricted stopping ban, you may load and unload according to the city, as long as this does not cause any delay. You can read more about our services under parking restriction zone.

Old-town pedestrian zone and Bahnstadt: loading times, permits and registration in Heidelberg

According to the City of Heidelberg, loading and unloading in the old-town pedestrian zone is permitted on weekdays from 6 to 11 am. If you need to drive in outside this time, you need an exemption permit under § 46 StVO. It only applies for the period applied for; the application should be submitted at least two weeks in advance, and the fee is 10 euros for one to five days. No permits are issued for Sundays and public holidays. The responsible office is the Office for Mobility, Bergheimer Straße 111, [email protected]. In the application, state the location, date, time window, number plate and billing address; the permit must be clearly visible in the vehicle when entering. Urgent access outside loading times is only possible in exceptional cases and requires a detailed justification.

After moving in, you register at one of Heidelberg's citizens' offices (Bürgerämter). According to the city, the Bürgeramt Mitte is responsible for the Bahnstadt, Bergheim, Südstadt and Weststadt, among others. The landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) must be presented with every registration; you book appointments online. Practical tips for settling in can be found in the guide Living in Heidelberg, and cost factors in the moving guide for Heidelberg.
