Living in Stuttgart
Stuttgart: valley basin, vineyards and 400 Stäffele stairways
Neighbourhoods, work, offices
Stuttgart lies "between forest and vines": the city centre sits in the valley basin of the Nesenbach, with slopes and vineyards rising all around and the Neckar flowing to the east. The city area spans almost 350 metres in altitude difference and, with around 400 hectares of vines, has one of the largest wine-growing areas of any German city. The state capital has a good 609,000 inhabitants and is home to the Mercedes-Benz Group, Porsche in Zuffenhausen, Bosch and Mahle. For your move this means: allow for hillside locations, steps and narrow stairwells in period buildings.
Whether a period flat in the West or a terraced house in Möhringen – we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and bring your household goods to Stuttgart via the A9, A6 and A81, around 631 kilometres. Our private move services include packing, transport and furniture assembly. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and our liability for your goods is under the German Commercial Code (HGB). We clarify the parking restriction and access on the slope before moving day.

Before
the move to Stuttgart
A move to Stuttgart comes with a few city-specific issues. Because of the basin location and the slopes, access is often narrow and steep; according to the city, mobile parking restrictions are put up at short notice. Registration can be done online or at one of the citizens' offices, where appointments are in demand. Parking management with a residents' parking permit applies in the inner districts and other parts of the city. We are happy to help you choose a district that suits your commute, budget and lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions about living in Stuttgart
Basin, Neckar valley, Filder: Stuttgart's city districts
Stuttgart is divided into 23 city districts with 152 neighbourhoods – five inner districts in the valley basin (Mitte, Nord, Ost, Süd, West) and 18 outer ones. In the basin you live densely and urbanly, with period buildings, the Stadtbahn light rail and short distances, but often without a lift and with scarce parking. The mid-slope locations offer views, but also steep streets and steps – more than 400 Stäffele stairways connect the levels. Bad Cannstatt lies on the Neckar, has its own historic core and mineral baths; this is where Gottlieb Daimler founded his engine company in 1887.
On the Filder plateau to the south lie Degerloch with the TV tower, Möhringen, Sillenbuch and Vaihingen with the University of Stuttgart campus; the University of Hohenheim is in Plieningen. In the north, Porsche is based in Zuffenhausen, and in the Neckar valley the Mercedes-Benz plant is in Untertürkheim. Which district suits you depends on your commute, budget and whether you prefer to live in the basin or up on the heights.
Working, studying and living in Stuttgart
The most important employers are automotive companies headquartered here: Mercedes-Benz Group, Porsche, Bosch and Mahle. In addition there is the financial centre with the Börse Stuttgart stock exchange and Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, insurers such as Württembergische, and companies such as EnBW and Breuninger. The University of Stuttgart and the University of Hohenheim attract students and researchers. We do not quote rents here because they vary greatly by district and fittings; the housing market is considered tight.
In everyday life, greenery and wine shape the city: the Schlossgarten, Rosensteinpark and Höhenpark Killesberg, the Wilhelma zoo and vineyards in the middle of the city. The S-Bahn and the SSB's Stadtbahn serve almost every district; with Stuttgart 21 the rail hub is being reorganised. So much can be reached without a car.

From Berlin to Stuttgart – and back
We come from Berlin and carry out moves to Stuttgart as well as back – 631 kilometres, usually with loading the day before. The page Moving from Berlin to Stuttgart describes the route and driving time; further destinations can be found in the overview of service areas and under long-distance moves.
Stuttgart: mobile parking restrictions, the 72-hour rule and the diesel driving ban
For moves in Stuttgart, the parking situation is decisive. The city points out that mobile parking restrictions, for example for building sites or moves, are put up at short notice. Road users must therefore check within 72 hours (3 full days) whether their vehicle is still parked legally. If it is still there on the 4th day after the mobile signs were put up, it can be towed away if it causes an obstruction. We could not confirm a dedicated application page for moving-day parking restrictions with the city. The 115 service line (Monday to Friday 8 to 18) names the responsible office. More about our service: parking restriction zone.
The city's diesel driving ban also applies to the removal lorry: diesel vehicles with Euro 4/IV or worse have been banned throughout the city since 1 January 2019, and Euro 5/V or worse since 1 July 2020 in the small low-emission zone (the basin plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen). Commercial delivery traffic, among others, is exempt; according to the city, the list is not exhaustive. The emissions standard is stated in the vehicle documents, and a violation costs a €100 fine. Whether your vehicle is affected in an individual case, we clarify with the city in advance before confirming your date.
Stuttgart: 23 city districts, citizens' offices and the residents' parking permit
According to the city's statistics, Stuttgart is divided into 23 city districts and 152 neighbourhoods, from Bad Cannstatt and Stuttgart-Mitte to Zuffenhausen. You should check the access, floor and parking situation of your new neighbourhood in advance, especially on slopes and narrow streets.
On registration: by law, a deadline of two weeks after moving in applies (§ 17 of the Federal Registration Act, BMG). The city offers registration and change of address online at wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de. In person, you can go to one of the 22 citizens' offices (Bürgerbüros); every open office is available regardless of your home district. You book appointments online; since 3 August 2026 the citizens' offices have been open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons by appointment only. A real-time traffic light shows the waiting time; if it says "Alle Wartemarken bereits vergeben" (all queue tickets already issued), switch to another citizens' office or another day. Feuerbach, Nord and Möhringen are currently closed, so check opening in advance.
According to the city, parking management covers the districts of Mitte, Nord, Ost, Süd, West, Vaihingen, Untertürkheim, Zuffenhausen, Degerloch and Bad Cannstatt. The residents' parking permit allows free parking in your own sub-area but is not available at all citizens' offices, for example not in Botnang or Plieningen. If you move within an area, you change the permit online with a registration certificate. Location information: moving company Stuttgart, routes: long-distance move.
