Living in Halberstadt: Districts Rents & the Harz

Halberstadt for New Residents
Halberstadt: Cathedral Square, Half-Timbering and the Harz on Your Doorstep
Settling in, not just moving
Halberstadt is the administrative seat of the Harz district and, with almost 37,000 inhabitants, its largest town. It lies on the Holtemme river, around 20 kilometres north of the Harz, and is called the “Gateway to the Harz” because of the many roads that converge here. From the 9th century until 1648 it was a bishop's seat; the French Gothic cathedral and St Martin's Church still shape the skyline today. On 8 April 1945 more than 80 per cent of the town centre was destroyed, and much has been restored since 1990. Around 450 half-timbered houses survive, mainly in the northern old town around the Voigtei and in the Westendorf.
For newcomers, three things matter most in the first weeks: registering with the registration authority, finding a flat in the right location and the commute to work. Halberstadt is the largest railway junction on the northern edge of the Harz, with hourly trains towards Magdeburg, Halle (Saale), Goslar and Quedlinburg; within the town, trams and buses run. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle the transport – our page Moving Berlin – Halberstadt describes the route from Berlin.

Moving to Halberstadt: Request a Fixed Price After a Survey
Volume, floor and access clarified in advance
Call us on 01625978461. We discuss the size of the flat, the floor and access – for example whether a parking restriction is needed in the old town – and give you a binding fixed price after the survey. That way you know what your move to Halberstadt will cost before it happens, and you can plan registration, giving notice on your old flat and the handover calmly.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What We Clarify in Advance for Your Move to Halberstadt
Access, floor, date
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Halberstadt-based firm. That is why, before moving day, we clarify with you how the lorry can get close to the building, whether the stairwell or lift imposes limits and whether a parking restriction has to be applied for. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give the price after the survey as a fixed price. For your private move we agree the date and loading times with you.

Halberstadt
for Newcomers
If you are moving to Halberstadt, decide early where you want to live: in the old town with the cathedral, Holzmarkt and half-timbering, in the newer neighbourhoods or in one of the districts such as Langenstein or Schachdorf Ströbeck. Your commute, bus or tram line and the search for a nursery depend on this. You complete registration within two weeks. On request we take care of the parking restriction application, furniture assembly and – if the new flat is not yet available – storage. It is best to set up Deutsche Post's mail forwarding before moving day.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Halberstadt
Town Centre and Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Halberstadt
The old town around Cathedral Square, Holzmarkt and St Martin's Church is the historic centre. Many half-timbered houses stand in the northern old town around the Voigtei and in the Westendorf; if you move in there, check stair width and access in advance. South of the town lie the Spiegelsberge hills with a zoo and landscape park.
The town includes the districts with their own local councils – Aspenstedt, Athenstedt, Emersleben, Klein Quenstedt, Langenstein, Sargstedt and Schachdorf Ströbeck – plus smaller places such as Wehrstedt, the Klussiedlung or the Sargstedter Siedlung. Böhnshausen and Mahndorf belong to the locality of Langenstein. We plan vehicle and team to suit the location.
Working, Learning and Leisure in Halberstadt
The economy is shaped by small and medium-sized businesses, including mechanical engineering, plastics and medical technology. VIS Verkehrs Industrie Systeme builds and repairs rail vehicles, Halberstädter Würstchen sausages are known well beyond the region, and Daimler Truck opened a logistics site in 2025. Harz University of Applied Sciences has its Department of Public Administration in Halberstadt.
For leisure there is the cathedral treasury, the Gleimhaus as one of the oldest literary museums in Germany, the Heineanum natural history museum and the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater. In St Burchardi's Church, John Cage's organ piece ORGAN²/ASLSP has been playing since 2001, designed to last 639 years. We do not quote specific rents because we have no reliable current source.
What a Move to Halberstadt Costs
Small or large – our moving prices are fairly calculated. A 1-room flat moves from €375, a 2-room flat from €615. For 3 rooms costs start from €899, for 4 rooms from €1,309. Registering in Halberstadt: Landlord Confirmation and Online Appointments
If you move to Halberstadt, under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. Under Citizen Services and Online Services, the town of Halberstadt offers online appointment booking and a page on the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung). There you will also find forms and the administration's opening hours. The page “Was erledige ich wo?” (what do I do where?) explains which office is responsible for your matter.
Registration requires your landlord's confirmation. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the landlord is obliged to cooperate. The confirmation states:
- the name and address of the landlord (and of the owner, if different),
- the move-in date,
- the address of the flat,
- the names of the persons required to register.
If the confirmation is issued electronically, the landlord receives a reference code, which they pass on to you for registration. If the landlord refuses the confirmation or it does not arrive in time, you must inform the registration authority without delay.
Alternatively, there is electronic registration at wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de. The service is free, can be used nationwide and provides a digital registration certificate. The public authority number 115 can help with questions.
Practical tips on booking an appointment are in the article Booking an appointment at the Bürgeramt.
Halberstadt's Districts from Langenstein to Schachdorf Ströbeck
Besides the town centre, the town of Halberstadt includes seven districts: Aspenstedt am Huy, Athenstedt am Huy, Emersleben, Klein Quenstedt, Langenstein, Sargstedt am Huy and Schachdorf Ströbeck. Each district has its own page on halberstadt.de.
- Langenstein: the town lists the palace with its park, the cave dwellings, the open-air pool and the Langenstein-Zwieberge concentration camp memorial.
- Schachdorf Ströbeck: the village is designated a European Village of Culture and has intangible cultural heritage centred on chess. The town lists its chess history, chess museum, chess tower, chess square and the living chess ensemble. There is also a nursery and the after-school club “Sonnenschein” in the village.
- Aspenstedt am Huy has the nursery “Spatzennest”, Emersleben the nursery “Emerslebener Storchenkinder”.
For walks, the town names the hiking routes “Mystisches rund um Langenstein” and “Thekenberge bei Langenstein” in Langenstein. It lists playgrounds in Langenstein and Ströbeck, among other places. The Ströbeck chess museum is part of the programme “Reisen für Alle – Barrierefrei durch Halberstadt” (accessible travel). The district pages also give details of nurseries and after-school clubs in individual districts. The town administration's citizen information service answers questions about the town.
How the locations compare is explained in the Halberstadt guide. Our services for Halberstadt are on the Halberstadt location page.
